Review

Praise for Sin BravelyAn NPR Best Book of 2017"Rowe deftly juxtaposes dark humor with raw emotion without ever yanking the reader out of the story." ―The Guardian"Anxiety, guilt, and a debilitating fear of going to hell don’t feel like they’d make for a great vacation read, but Sin Bravely, Maggie Rowe’s hilarious―and ultimately heartwarming―story of her time spent in an Evangelical Christian rehab, is . . . Laugh-out-loud funny." ―GOOP, 1 of 8 new reads for Labor Day Weekend"Rowe’s fantastic book is a born-again version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest...Not for the faint of heart, this is a cutting examination of Rowe’s spiritual evolution that plunges into the big questions with the fearlessness found in the most brilliant of comics." ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"A gripping exploration of the necessity of disobedience on the road to authenticity. A beautifully written, deeply funny memoir.” —Jill Soloway, creator of Transparent"This book is so honest, so chock full of struggle and philosophical profundity —and ultimately so heartbreakingly funny— that one is only left to conclude that if Heaven is a place that won’t let in the likes of Maggie Rowe, then why the hell would anyone even want to go there?" —Mitch Hurwitz, creator of Arrested Development"A sharp, genuinely funny book about the dangers of literalism and fear of the afterlife. A must read for anyone on this side of eternity.” —Bill Maher“Maggie Rowe suffered for our sins so we don't have to. There are many laugh out loud moments in Maggie's deeply moving account of her spiritual wrestling match with a god she both feared and worshiped. A book with an original voice that should definitely be on your reading list.” —Annabelle Gurwitch, author of the New York Times bestseller and Thurber Prize Finalist I See You Made an Effort"Maggie Rowe's writing is a rare thing: brilliant, intelligent, hilarious, thoughtful, and, most importantly, utterly believable. Sin Bravely is a startling reminder of how 'faith' and 'belief' are often synonymous with pure terror of a fictional—and seemingly very mean—Guy, and of what He'll do if you doubt Him for even a second. Her fear of Hell is a hell in itself, lived though the mind of a fiercely intelligent woman. Sin Bravely deserves to sell more copies and scare more people than the Bible; this is what I call a 'good book.'" —Peter Baynham, co-writer, Borat and Arthur Christmas"A powerful debut memoir that hits the unusual sweet spot of rigorous theology, candid sexuality, and laugh-out-loud humor. Who knew theological inquiry and obsessive questioning of one’s eternal fate could be so damn funny?" —Mishna Wolff, author of I’m Down: A Memoir"Hilarious and heartbreaking. Hints of The Bell Jar in that Maggie Rowe makes a painful story feel vibrant and funny and alive. Immensely readable." —Ilyse Mimoun, author of Choose Your Own Love Story"By turns harrowing and hilarious, Maggie Rowe takes us with her on a journey to the heart of faith and despair, love and madness." —Eric Kaplan, author Does Santa Exist?: A Philosophical Investigation"Readers who have wrestled with self-doubt over the strength of their convictions will find a funny, frank companion in this frantically compelling memoir...Rowe’s book does not provide easy answers, but her capacity to eventually sin bravely signals a new beginning. This engaging and adventurous book is an excellent companion for fellow seekers."―Booklist"Rowe is a winning narrator...you can’t help but root for her." ―America Magazine

I just finished this book and I miss it already. Much of Maggie's experience parallels mine, as a literal-minded, truth-seeking child with perfectionist tendencies making my way through an Evangelical upbringing. As her story unfolded, I recognized scripture verses I thought I'd forgotten and thoughts I was never brave enough to admit; bless her for sharing them so I don't have to.Heartbreakingly honest and startlingly funny, but never self-indulgent or unkind, she gives herself a harder time than any of the finely-drawn characters who populate her story. I found the book joyful and ultimately faith-affirming. As Maggie's therapist tells her, "maybe true connection with God can be defined as whatever inspires kindness, whatever makes your heart big." Works for me.Bonus: this edition has those cool covers you can fold over and use as bookmarks. Perfection.

Maggie Rowe was just a child when she questioned her salvation, the salvation that her parents enjoyed. Like her parents, she asked Christ to be her savior but in her case she wasn’t sure she was sincere enough so she asked Christ into her heart countless times but to no avail. Her fear of eternal hell would not be abated. Talks with her parents and pastor were in vain. God was supposed to be love, but his eternal dungeon contradicted his love and this confusion made it impossible for her to enjoy salvation and to see God as being unconditionally loving, as her church told her. Worse, her questions were considered blasphemous. In college, she experimented with secularism, dated a non-believer, and while attending a Japanese art film by Kurosawa she had an anxiety attack where she tasted rancid butter and had to be institutionalized in a Christian rehab. Her therapist Bethany is a pinch-faced sub-average, uncouth intellect who bullies Maggie and the other patients. Bethany is clearly the incarnation of Nurse Ratched. She humiliates her patients while wallowing in her shallow piety. She accuses Maggie, erroneously of being a bulimic and a lesbian and accuses her of being in denial. It is only when Maggie opens up to her subversive psychiatrist Dr. Benton that she finds respite from her fundamentalist torture. Benton suggests that the hell doctrine may be a metaphor for the here and now and opens Maggie to the possibility of a more universalist God, one who will eventually embrace everyone into the heavenly kingdom. Giving her an exit sign from her claustrophobic fundamentalism and literalism, Maggie can finally spread her wings and fly.Now a comedian, writer, and actor, Maggie Rowe uses her comic chops to make her agonizing adventure sardonic, biting, funny, and enlightening at the same time. Highly recommended.

I related to this story so many levels. Ms. Rowe details a horrifying time in her young life when, at 19 years old, her religious zeal landed her in an evangelical psych unit. Maggie was clearly a deep thinker from a young age, and the simplistic explanations she was given neither answered her questions nor calmed her soul. While there's a repeat of such blunders at the unit, she also meets some beautiful people who who give her the courage to do the impossible -- trust that life is not a test of righteousness, but a gift to be experienced, no matter how messy it gets. If you grew up with any kind of fundamentalism, secular or religious, this book is for you. Plus, it's hilarious. Thank you for baring your soul, Maggie. I loved this book.

For anyone who grew up in the hot seat of Midwest morals this book is a pure JOY ride. Maggie's writing is honest and laugh out loud funny. Her ability to describe the feeling of confusion and the persistent desire for altruism for a person with obsessive thinking is spot on. She captures the eloquence of acute observation and coming of age fears. The cast of characters is hysterical-a group of believers who can't possibly have a multidimensional understanding of the universe mixed with a few who live so blissfully unaware. Please turn this into a screenplay!

Great read! Wincingly funny, vulnerable, charming and heartbreaking! Maggie Rowe lays it all on the line and posits some fundamental questions along the way. Sin Bravely is a personal journey, written bravely, that helped me to examine religion in a completely new and (thanks to Maggie baring it all) safe way! I could not put the book down as I needed to know how our sweet, little Heroine (it starts at age 5) could survive the squeezing pressures of Heaven and Hell! A must read, especially for EVERYONE, raising their children with religion.

I'm not a big fan of organized religion and this book affirms a lot of my dislike. The main character is a creative and very smart person who is confronted with the contradictions of religion. Throughout the book her relationship with religion is strengthened and then weakened. Strictly by her persistent intelligent questioning. I was unhappy for the character in that she was put in a spiritual counseling facility which only highlights how misguided such counselors are. Really a sweet book, very well written, engaging. If there's ever a sequel I recommend the title: Sin Sweetly

I meant to write a review of this when it was fresher in my mind. I'll say this: I liked it so much that I have decided to teach it in a college-level course this semester. It's a moving, funny, completely absorbing memoir about the author's nervous breakdown, which was induced by a lifelong fear of being damned, quite literally, to hell. What''s especially compelling is how theologically canny she was as a very, very small child.

A compelling book that took me along for the ride. Honest and compelling, echoing so many young folks I have encountered with challenges of mental illness. Her inner thoughts and conflicts lay bare the inherent problems and contradictions of Calvinist theology and fundamentalism. Worth reading!

I absolutely love this book. Computer Science is my hobby, and a major part of my profession; thus making this book indispensable in terms of providing historical value to understanding CS roots. Reading this work has opened my mind to pioneers such as Charles Sanders Pierce, the father of pragmatism, and his numerous collections of philosophic, logical and mathematical writings. Furthermore, there is an endless array of notable reads that should be attempted; and not just by those who study computer science. For example, the writings of Euclid, George Boole, Russel Bertrand and much more. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to "feel" what computer science truly is. Alan Turing's work is so influential and most people fail to realize its significance. Therefore do yourself the favor and pick this book up, you will not regret it, and likely it will help shape your mind as it did mine. Enjoy!

The best thing about this book is it will leave you hungering for more details from e.g. Martin Davis' Computability and Unsolvability.A Turing Machine in this book is described differently from what you'd find in Charles Petzold's The Annotated Turing. Instead of being in tabular form it's described by a "state diagram." These diagrams are introduced to describe finite automata, and a Turing Machine is presented as a finite automaton with additional capabilities. So in addition to accepting and non-accepting states that halt, a TM can also diverge (not halt). It's an appealing way to learn about TMs.The author is a mathematician, but you don't need experience reading definition-theorem-proof textbooks. In fact there's a section toward the end of the book titled Proof by Contradiction containing a thorough proof that sqrt(2) is not a rational number.I had a few "that's cool as s**t" moments while reading the book. One example is the tag system for the modified Collatz function. There were a couple places in the book I found unconvincing due to the introduction of an underspecified new type of TM. The multi-tape TM in the section RAMs Can Be Emulated by Turing Machines, Chap 6. And the TM that depends on the results of two other TMs running simultaneously in parallel in the proof on page 117.Professor Bernhardt is an excellent writer and Turing's Vision is a fine introduction to computation.

This is an excellent book on Turing and computability. It explains the halting problem in an intuitive and clear manner that I could not find in dozens of other books and papers. The author is able to highlight the important ideas that are the foundations of computability. The style is clear, readable and friendly. The length of the book is also very reasonable. I wish he explained more clearly the difference between the Entscheidungsproblem (proved impossible by Turing) and formal completeness (proved impossible by Godel). Nonetheless, this is an excellent book, for which I congratulate the author for such a wonderful work.

Turing's Vision gives the reader an overview of the logic required to understand the foundations of computability and computer science. Most works on Turing for the popular audience focus on his remarkable life but in this book the author tries to convey the core ideas of what computability is how computation can take place and the limits on what is computable. The author gives a history of where mathematical logic stood at the turn of the century and takes the reader through how Turing solved a major outstanding problem posed by Hilbert. The book is accessible to the general audience but this is a mathematical text so patience is often required. The book starts out by describing the world in the early 20th century from a mathematicians perspective. In particular the author covers topics like the goal of formalizing all of mathematics so that any statement could be proven or disproven within that system as well as the entscheidungsproblem, which was effectively the halting problem. The author goes through the foundations of arithmetic and gives a quick overview of things like Gödel's results on the incompleteness of any mathematical system to describe itself fully using its axioms. The author covers the history as well as people working on these logic questions and gives a rough overview of who was working on what to the reader. The author then goes on to describe finite automata, a computational system which can answer a wide array of questions and the author also shows what cannot be computed by finite automata. The author describes Turing machines and how they cover and extend the boundaries of what can be computed by finite automata as well as what things like polynomial time and NP problems are. Though not comprehensive the book remains accessible so its definitely quite refreshing for the non-mathematician reader. The author then spends time on some more formal mathematics, in particular lambda calculus, a system of computing that is equivalent to Turing's more intuitive machine. Parts of the book like this add to completeness but can be skipped over by the reader less interested in all the logical structure behind the ideas. The author spends time on how to correspond Turing machines to finite automata. It is quite remarkable how certain problems are easily solved in one system but incredibly complicated in others. Modern computer architecture is covered briefly so theory becomes practical but these details are covered quite casually. The author then goes back to logic to cover the initial question posed at the beginning and goes through logical paradoxes when one looks at sets which refer to themselves. This concept is shown to be relevant for programs which are trying to decide on whether programs will halt or not and that impossibility is why the halting problem cannot be solved. The mathematical side of the book is furthered toward the end as the author spends time on understanding diagonalization arguments that are required to follow Turing's original argument. The author then goes on to discuss what can be computed as a consequence of these results from counting and cardinality. The author ends with a brief history of Turing and his work and life, it is very brief so just ties actual events to the book.Turing's Vision is a introduction to the foundational logic required to understand what a turing machine can and cannot do and what the nature of computation is. The reader gets a sense of the limits of what can be answered by a computer and why. There are other books which have a similar reader level like The Annotated Turing for example which are very good but this book focuses more on the logic side rather than deciphering the paper that Turing wrote. For the more technically inclined reader this is recommended but it is approachable for those who are willing to go through some more formal arguments

good story

I was hoping for more about the development of computer technology, sort of a timeline. The author tried to simplify the concepts and terms used in this field, but I still had trouble following it. But that's because of my own limitations grasping abstract processes.

What an outstanding, ground-up view of the technology and thinking that informs an increasing amount of how and what tools we use virtually every day to make decisions and, well, live.

Reading Chekhov: A Critical Journey, by Janet Malcolm

From The New Yorker

The author's pilgrimage to Chekhov's Russia—Moscow, St. Petersburg, the gardens of his villa in Yalta—is a reunion with this most reticent of literary fathers. Malcolm analyzes the transformations that Chekhov grants his redeemable roués and guileless heroines, and illuminates the hidden surreality and waywardness of his realism. Review

“One of the most gratifying things about Reading Chekhov is its quiet, vigorous defense of the prerogatives of criticism against the imperial banality of biography.” —The New York Times Book Review“[A] thoughtful and sensitive study . . . A great part of the charm and the skill of Janet Malcolm’s book lies in the very Chekhovian way she mingles personal with critical comment, taking us not only through Chekhov’s stories but through the removals and journeys of his life and her own travels in quest of his Russian haunts.” —The New York Review of Books“With the gentle inevitability of a balloon lofting skyward, the discourse effortlessly ascends from chatter to contemplation to genuinely brilliant critique. . . . With its balance of distilled perception and companionable spirit, Reading Chekhov embodies the same qualities it celebrates.” —San Francisco Chronicle

The book really helps one to understand Chekhov and the motivation behind some of the themes which appear and re-appear throughout his writings. This is not an easy task given Chekhov’s sometimes maddening ambiguity but Malcom does a great job throughout. It helps to have read some of the short stories she uses as examples but this is not critical. I read this book on the recommendation of a former English professor of mine and was delighted with what I learned.

Few readers have time to wrestle with the long biographies and academic treatises that proliferate on beloved writers. Lack of time trumps the best intentions. Janet Malcolm has saved Chekhov enthusiasts the trouble by doing the reading herself, adding her own insights, and throwing in a bit of travel writing as well.Literary criticism predominates in this 200-page book, with biography taking second place and travelogue third. Malcolm weaves the biographical details around comments about the stories and plays; so, for example, we learn that Chekhov was steeped in Russian Orthodoxy--more so, apparently, than even Tolstoy. What makes that especially interesting is the contrast between Chekhov's self-proclaimed nonbelief and the way he handles religious themes in the stories; there is some evidence, presented in this book, that these matters were not as settled in Chekhov's mind as one might think just based on his statements. (I, for one, have always been impressed with the sympathy Chekhov shows to the characters who appear in The Bishop, a story not discussed by Malcolm.)Malcolm also takes on in brief compass Chekhov's trip to Sakhalin (arduous to get there; led to a rather dull, non-Chekhovian book); his death at 44 from tuberculosis in a hotel in Germany (which had various eyewitnesses and led to a variety of embellished accounts); and his relationships with women (he liked them pretty and well-dressed), with his publisher, with Tolstoy, and with his parents and siblings. She spices it up with thought-provoking insights; one example: "In his stories and plays, Chekhov is afraid for all men. He was only in his twenties and thirties when he wrote most of them, but like other geniuses--especially those who die prematurely--he wrote as if he were old. Toward the end of Ward No. 6, he veers off--as he does in other dark and terrible works, such as Peasants and In the Ravine--to rejoice for all men in the beauty of the world."As for her travels, Malcolm visits St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Yalta, each city in the company of a different tour guide. Her observations, far from being unfairly critical, are subtle, sardonic, and on the mark--certainly anyone who has traveled to Russia will recognize her guides. As I wrote this, I changed the rating from four to five stars--I can't really think what would improve it. An index perhaps, since despite its brevity one would like to be able to search the contents more easily. And I would disagree with the book's jacket, which claims that those unfamiliar with Chekhov could enjoy this volume. At the very least, one should have read a volume of the major stories and be familiar with the plays. Among other works, she discusses The Lady with the Lapdog, The Steppe, The Kiss, The Schoolmistress, The Three Sisters, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orhard, and more.Confound it, however, you're never off the hook--the book whets your appetite for more, naturally! Those longer biographies and critical treatments beckon...and all the stories, perhaps in a different translation this time...been a while since I looked at the plays...well, good intentions count for something, right?

This book is just wonderful. Malcolm analyzes Chekhov's stories and plays and life with much astuteness. The quotations from Chekhov's writings which have been included highlight the points Malcolm makes -- and brings out the heart and genius of Chekhov.

I really enjoyed this book--the conceit and Malcolm's (Chekovian) perceptions about her travels.

I had high expectations for the book which were sorely disappointed. Malcolm frames her assessment of Chekhov’s work around almost random trips to visit Chekhoviana all across 1990s Russia and slight readings of the short stories and plays.Very little of deep or even shallow interpretations that would really help anyone to a more nuanced sense of the man and his work. It’s short—give it a try or skip it altogether.

This book is not an analysis of Chekov's writing or stories, so much as a leisurely travelogue through the Russian countryside where his stories unfolded. It is not a heavy work of scholarship, but provides a pleasant look at the ambiance of his stories, which should enhance one's enjoyment of them. It is worth the time.Fred

This was a fine book that came just how it was described. I will not hesitate one moment in the future to buy from this seller. The book arrived quicker than projected, and my mail is usually slow. It is clear that once the order was placed they made sure to quickly get it sent out.

From the Inside Flap

A Nobel laureate reveals the often surprising rules that govern a vast array of activitiesboth mundane and life-changingin which money may play little or no role. If youve ever sought a job or hired someone, applied to college or guided your child into a good kindergarten, asked someone out on a date or been asked out, youve participated in a kind of market. Most of the study of economics deals with commodity markets, where the price of a good connects sellers and buyers. But what about other kinds of goods, like a spot in the Yale freshman class or a position at Google? This is the territory of matching markets, where sellers and buyers must choose each other, and price isnt the only factor determining who gets what. Alvin E. Roth is one of the worlds leading experts on matching markets. He has even designed several of them, including the exchange that places medical students in residencies and the system that increases the number of kidney transplants by better matching donors to patients. In Who Gets What and Why, Roth reveals the matching markets hidden around us and shows how to recognize a good match and make smarter, more confident decisions.

The below is a review of the MP3 audiobook version of this workThis book is an examination of matchmaking in markets where conventional price making does not apply. For example in the market for kidneys, on-line dating services, selection processes used in placing high school students in NY and Boston and universities in general and similar such markets. The book is interesting in many ways. One is the description that Dr. Roth provides on these markets that are so ignored in economics departments. He provides a decent discussion and analysis as to how they work. In addition he provides a discussion as to what variables affect them (i.e., depth of market, speed required for decision making, etc.) and how. Based on this readers can see what constitutes good and badly functioning markets in these areas. An excellent discussion of these, all the more important, as stated previously, that their existence is barely even mentioned in economics classes. In addition, there is also some discussion relating to institutions and how they are important to well-functioning markets in these areas. This part of the book, however, is relatively weak. It is too short and hence lacks the really in-depth discussion that is really needed. This is also ironic in that the institutional structure of these markets is very important to their functioning.Regarding the audiobook, its reader sounds very much like Dr. Roth. This includes his inflexions, tone, etc. It reminded me of him as I had him as a student. The reader probably attended a lecture or two of his.In conclusion, a very good book for those interested in the functioning of non-price markets.

Who gets what and why gives the reader an idea about how careful structuring of a market place can lead to great improvements in efficiency. The field that the author received the nobel prize in has been growing in importance over the last few decades and there is no doubt that design of market places is something policy makers from the macroeconomic down to the microeconomic sphere should care about. In this book, Alvin Roth goes through examples throughout his career where improving market design has led to better systems for people to live in. It is clear and interesting. The book is split into 4 parts, the first is titled Markets are everywhere. The author starts by describing markets and goes through commodity ideas and how standardizing of products leads to markets that are thick. He discusses how commodity exchanges were set up in the US in Chicago for example and how wheat trades enormous volumes in a standardized fashion. He discusses the coffee market as well which is a nice little insight. The author then moves on to discussing the market for kidneys; an exchange he helped to create. Here is where the reader starts to really get a feel for the work the author has done. The complexity in coordinating kidney transfers is real and the construction of chains of donors who could trade kidneys amongst them in a mutually dependent way turned out to be able to save many lives. The author discusses how the kidney exchanges evolved and how improving the mechanisms for exchange was in everyone's interest. The second section is titled Thwarted Desires in which he describes some market failures. The author starts by discussing how in situations in which there is a first mover advantage, market places can fail as participants try to beat each other in order even though by taking such an action they reduce the amount of information needed to make a decision. Such coordination failures lead to suboptimal selections by both parties. The author discusses some of the subject matter of Flash Boys and by that I mean high frequency finance. He describes why the spending of billions on infrastructure for speed of trading which has no real economic benefits are where markets can also fail. Speed of markets should not in and of itself be the desire for market design. The author finally touches upon making markets safe to transact in such that the rules of the market place are adhered to so that people can trust the mechanism of trade. The author moves into the real market designs that are being used by medical and school systems in part 3. He first discusses how the placement of medical schools was flawed and people were being placed far too early but such an outcome was the inevitable consequence of the issues of part 2 where first mover advantage ruined coordination. The author discusses surgeons as well as urologists and how the culture of the medical field can impact the required solutions to the failures of a market place. The author then discusses the school systems in NY and Boston where he had a direct impact on improving. He discusses the preference list that were being asked of students each year and how the back and forth between students being selected and the city system led to congestion that was inefficient for everyone. The author also discussed Boston which had different problems. But in this section the reader gets a sense of how clever design of markets can lead to better outcomes for everyone. The author then gets into some ethical issues like repugnant markets and brings up horsemeat in California as banned due to its repugnancy by the population in California. The boundaries of what should be eligible for trade are contextual to time and place and things like organs for sale and surrogacy can lead to questions about what broad set of values does the population have and given that what should be allowed to be traded and under what conditions. Once we know what goods and services we want to be transactable having the best market designs to facilitate will lead to better outcomes for those involved. The author convinces the leader through the book that market design can be instrumental in efficiency gains.Who gets what and why is very readable and interesting. Rarely do people talk about market design so its a nice change of pace for a popular economics book. I think anyone who reads this will have a better idea about some of what economists look at as well as how market design can make a world of difference to the outcomes of the marketplace and free market can mean many different things as markets are not all alike.

When I studied economics, I thought it was incredible irrelevant in many ways. It just didn't match what I experienced and observed in the real world. Thankfully, since then, the field of behavioral economics has grown dramatically to help explain the reality of markets. That's why I found Dr. Roth's book very fascinating. For some of the markets explored in the book, I felt I almost needed a scorecard to keep track of the "who gets what and why." Far from being a flaw in the writing, it truly illustrated just how complex some markets are... and how increasingly complex some of them are becoming. Pity the poor folks for whom these market situations are an everyday reality. (I especially had sympathy for the parents who had to make school choices for their children. Looked more akin to gambling!)I think this book has some great insight for the some of the new "sharing" markets where money may not be a deciding factor. It may not be quick read due to the extreme amount of explanation that was sometimes necessary to describe the various markets. But definitely a treat for those who like to dig into behavioral economic issues.

Review

"Earnest, diligent and defiantly optimistic....What gives this book its real heat — is more personal; it’s the challenge posed to [Stein's] own cherished beliefs."—Parul Sehgal, The New York Times“A book written by a sociologist who writes like a novelist. It's a rare nonfiction page-turner and an important book.” —Rebecca Makkai, Conde Nast Traveler"Sensitive....A much needed primer for those who are puzzled by contemporary discussions about gender."—The New Yorker“Moves beyond the popular fixation on bathroom politics to explore individual lives.”—The Washington Post   “Moving.... By allowing her subjects to speak for themselves as those selves are reinvented in various ways, Stein leaves room for productive conversations to appear.”—Harper’s Magazine   “For readers bewildered by how to make sense of gender today.... Having received rave reviews, for those wanting to learn more about transgender people, especially as their issues continue to make news, Unbound serves as a useful primer.”—The Bay Area Reporter“Stein tracks the rapid evolution of gender identity in this provocative group portrait of trans men....Her book succeeds in documenting what it means to be trans today.” —Publishers Weekly “Arlene Stein brings insight, wit, and generosity to this perceptive analysis of the dazzling shifts in how we imagine, and live out, gender today. Unbound will surprise readers who thought they had this figured out decades ago.”  —Janice Irvine, Professor of Sociology, University of Massachusetts“A new sociological study on transgender individuals and their experience transitioning. This significant book provides medical, sociological, and psychological information that can only serve to educate those lacking understanding and awareness of an entire community of individuals who deserve representation. A stellar exploration of the complexities and limitations of gender.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred)“If you’ve been trying to make sense of how gender today seems to have slipped the chains that bind it to our bodies in familiar ways, Unbound is a book for you. It’s a sympathetic account by non-transgender sociologist Arlene Stein, aimed at a primarily non-transgender audience, of four people assigned female at birth who surgically masculinize their chests. Stein helps her readers understand that they, too, no longer need be bound by conventional expectations of the meaning of our flesh.” —Susan Stryker, founding co-editor, TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly“In this gripping, illuminating and clear-eyed portrait of what it means to be transmasculine in today’s America, Arlene Stein does justice to an oft-misrepresented topic. A vivid and fiercely empathetic narrative that juxtaposes nuanced portraits of these young people with a clearly articulated understanding of what it means to navigate a culture that treats gender minorities with contempt, ignorance, and violence. Unbound is a revelatory read that fills an important role in gender studies.” —Ryan Berg, author of No House to Call My Home“Unbound is a timely and critical response to the loud silence permeating the current public discourse on gender and transgender experiences, especially the lived realities of transgender men within the US. A critical and stunning work that will shift the ways gender has been politicized and imagined. Should be required reading for all.” —Darnell L. Moore, author of No Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black and Free in America

Enjoyable read, but I thought there would be more interviews. This is more of a case study with additional interviews. I wish there had been more discussion of the dynamic definitions of trans that are emerging and what they new definitions mean.

Arlene Stein deftly reports on a group of transgender men as they go through gender-affirming treatment and in the process offers a powerful and illuminating set of analyses on the shifting nature of gender identity in our time.

Good read

My spouse is FTM and is starting his journey this year. I gave him this book and he loved it.

Would especially recommend this book to transmen coping with the profound complexities of transition from a social perspective.

Like her previous books, Professor Arlene Stein's newest exploration of women who undergo surgery as part of the transition to being/identifying as men is extremely well-written, thoughtfully analyzed, sensitively portrayed, and sociologically rich.As someone who does not have an expertise in gender identity, per se, but is deeply fascinating by the new ways in which gender is being constructed, deconstructed, challenged, innovated, and transgressed, I found this book to be deeply compelling, illuminating, thought provoking, and at times, quite disturbing.Dr. Stein follows the experiences of various individuals -- we learn about their struggles, their triumphs, their families, their relationships, their sex lives, their sense of self, the medical procedures they go through -- and thus we are treated to a set of deeply human stories. But what makes this book intellectually rich, is that weaving throughout the stories are theoretical insights and sociological ponderings about the very dynamic nature of gender and sexuality and what it means to be a man and a woman, what it means to be a lesbian, or queer, etc.And Dr. Stein brings herself into the analysis as well, reflecting on her own experiences. In sum, I learned a ton. And the book has spurred numerous conversations with family, friends, and colleagues. It is extremely timely, too. For anyone who wants to understand what the comtemporary transgender experience is all about, this book is an absolute must.

The book explores the topic of transgender men when the author meets four people born as women in the waiting room of America’s top surgeon in chest masculinization, Dr. Russell Sassani in the LGBT haven of Ft. Lauderdale. So many people born as women are having their chests masculinized in Ft. Lauderdale that a transgender couple has bought a large house and turned it into short term housing for the week male transgender chest masculinization patients need to be near their doctor for recovery and follow up care. Three of the people at the surgeon’s office will be transformed into men in one week when the bandages come off. One will remain as a woman with drastically smaller breasts. She has embraced a queer identity and will remain a woman but a less obvious one when she wishes to appear masculine. This well-written and insightful book follows their lives for a year after the surgery. Featured prominently in the book is ben from a suburb in Portland, Maine who transitions with his parents in the community where he was raised. Ben’s story is compelling with its account of activism, despair, family struggle, love, support, loss, resilience, political confrontation, and community integration. The author, Arlene Stein, writes a compelling narrative that integrates the lives of the four with her own life as an open lesbian and broadly accepted research and trends with transgender people overall. She helps the reader understand the rise of the transgender phenomenon and explores the possibility of how and why people who might have identified as gay or lesbian in previous eras are now openly modifying their bodies and developing an entirely new gender identity. Stein had unusual access to Ben’s family and personal life. It reminded me of the 1973 PBS documentary “An American Family,” that tracked a middle class family in Santa Barbara, California in 1973. The eldest son, Lance Loud, is gay and comes out to his parents in front of the filmmakers during one of the most dramatic moments of the 12-hour production. Unlike lance, Ben and the other individuals are identified by pseudonyms and their real names are not used, in fear of their own safety and security. The book has a dramatic ending, which I will not spoil, but it is worth reading the book through the afterword. This single author delivered more than what I expected in this book. She did not have a team of research assistants and a six figure budget. This would have allowed her team to hang out in the doctor’s office for several weeks to obtain 50 or more profiles and to choose more and different kinds of people from this larger pool of subjects. She also followed up in person only with Ben and maintained contact by video phone with the others. More resources would have allowed her to have a bigger pool of people and to have lengthy visits with each one in their home communities a half year and year following the surgery. Such a book would have certainly yielded a lot more information but probably not more insights and knowledge about transgender men than what is contained in the current book. I thank the author for offering this extremely timely and highly informative work.

I so appreciate many aspects of this read, and believe it does a good job of humanzing the transmasculine experience, and the experiences of family and friends of transgender folk. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it (or listening to the Audiobook, which was my preferred format). However, I feel it's important to offer a caution based in my own viseral response. As an androsexual transmasculine person I experienced dysphoria mid-way through the book when it's focus turned almost exclusively to the relationship between transmasculine experience and lesbianism. It seems strange to me that the author would initially distinguish between gender identity and sexual orientation at a surface level, then go on to completely exclude androsexuality from the conversation. Throughout the book there was barely a passing mention of the possibility that a transman could be attracted to another man! How did this happen? I expect this has to do with the author's academic speciality and personal sexual orientation, but that rational did little to soothe my dissappointment or sense of being completely ejected from the conversation half way through the text.Folks, read the book. There's a lot of good stuff here. But, do not take away an assumption that all transmasculine folk are attracted to women. Author, if you get a chance to do a second print, please find a way to address this issue, and perhaps include the voice of at least one "gay" transman. Thank-you.

As someone with not just one, but three different inflammatory auto-immune disorders to cope with, I figured out some time ago that my body responds much better to a healthy diet than to prescription medicines, which often have very undesirable side effects, as well. Emma Green explains very clearly about inflammatory reactions and diet, including which foods to avoid and/or minimize. Even better, she's filled this book with great tasty, easy-to-prepare dishes and beverages, with ingredients which are not at all difficult to find. Many are those I've already learned to keep on hand. She's given me some new and interesting ideas on how to use them to make healthy and delicious food. This book is well thought out, well planned, and well executed. Thank you, Emma Green!

An helpful book. This book is splendid. I inclined such huge numbers of successful thing from this book. I was just diagnosed with an inflammatory condition, and I found this book to be super helpful. I did an Anti Inflammatory Diet once a few years ago, and I felt the best I ever have in my life-- but figuring out to make was overwhelming and stressful. This book takes out the overwhelm, and makes following this diet much, much easier. It is simple, straightforward, and very easy to read. I can't wait to get started with these recipes! The only suggestion I have with future editions is to include more substitutions, particularly with the smoothies. Also, wanted to add that YES this book does include some food not typically found in an Anti Inflammatory Diet. However, if you read the entire intro section it explains why, and stresses the importance of listening to your body and eliminating those foods if they cause you trouble.I was really astounded by perceiving what number of imperative recommendations accumulated in such a short book. Creator completed a phenomenal activity. I'll most likely prescribe this book to my loved ones. I really appreciate this book. Thanks to creator.

If you, like every person, do not know where to start a diet, but the doctor prescribed it for you, do not be afraid to give up unhealthy and high-calorie foods, because a healthy diet involves a large variety of dishes that will undoubtedly become your favorite.

Very disappointed in this book. Pictures ( all black and white by the way) do not match recipes. Info is screwed up. Limit fish to twice a week yet the diet is fish 5 days a week for a month!Like others have said, the book says to avoid certain foods but there they are in the recipes!Do not waster your money on this

Food is often the answer to our diseases that’s true…among the anti-inflammatory foods are leaf vegetables, beets, pineapple, salmon and others. This book collects a nice collection with their part.

I'm following this meal plan since a week now and results are satisfied so far, a good collection of anti inflammatory Recipes is inside breakfast, dinner, lunch, main dishes, desserts and soups are included. I cooked some snakes recipes too Smoked Trout & Mango Wraps Smoked Turkey Wrapped Zucchini Sticks Sweet Potato Chips and Mini Snack Muffins are delicious.

The book contradicts itself. Says to limit or avoid dairy, soy, and citrus yet here it is eith recipies with cheese, soymilk and grapefruit! I'd return it but it costs more then half of what I paid just to return it!

For sure everyone wants to eat healthy and organic grown foods, just that some people can't be able to do that because of being busy with many things and they just go on processed and easy to make foods. This cookbook I think can help to change their lifestyle into more healthier living. It gives essential info on right eating plan and recipes. The 4 -week meal plan is great to start this anti-inflammatory diet.

This is a genuinely helpful, interesting, entertaining, and powerful book. I'm re-reading it for the second time, mostly because I ENJOYED it so much the first time that I didn't take all the notes I needed to take. Non-fiction that you can't put down? Yes. Seriously. This book will challenge and inspire you to change in the ways you want to change, and it does so with humor, grace, and genuine insight.Spring break is over and I am not cowering in my room, dreading the return to a world filled with people. My geeky introvert self is actually eager to get back out into the world and make progress on achieving what I want.Side note--one of my college majors is psychology, and I was amazed at how precisely correct the author gets the science. Science majors get used to gritting our teeth when we hear people mangle our fields. My jaw never clenched once--she got it all right, to the best of my understanding as someone with a high GPA in my major. Important studies that have come up in different classes are cited and interpreted correctly, and even better--she pointed out really beautiful, creative ways to apply it. (Imagine an art book that doesn't just show you the world's masterpieces, it gives you immediately applicable hints as to how you can draw/paint/sculpt like that, too.)

Alkon has done a great service for the world in publishing this book. She uses her own (sometimes agonizing) life experience as a doormat to illustrate how she turned everything around. For those who want to understand why her approach works, Alkon provides ample scientific evidence from legitimate sources. Even if you're not a doormat, this book gives a great, easy to understand explanation of neuroplasticity and how we can override our hardwired tendencies to build healthy new habits and reach our full potential. Bonus: It's often a laugh-out-loud funny read.

I literally (and, yes, I’m using the word correctly!) just finished reading Amy Alkon’s latest book, “Unfuckogy,” and I loved it. I’m not usually a self-help book person, but when I heard her speak at the Festival of Books at USC this spring, I knew it was something I had to read. She was so entertaining and hilarious on the panel and reading her book was like having a private conversation with her. I love how she provids the research and the step-by-step guidelines to achieving actual change in our lives. I’m not someone who has a hard time standing up for myself, but I still found plenty of excellent information and insights for dealing with other issues.I’ve been recommending this book and singing its praises to everyone I know. I was especially impressed by the fact that she doesn’t just talk the talk, but actually walks the walk. She uses humor and scientifically-backed research to support her ideas and claims. This book was life-changing and I highly recommend it to anyone who is the least bit interested in learning more about why we do what we do, based on research and science, as well as having a step-by-step guide for making long-lasting changes in your life!

This book is funny, and encouraging. For those of us that don't stand up for ourselves.Amy gives us the tools to do a better job.

Read Amy Alkon in Psychology Today. Searched and found her book. (Btw, she answers reader’s messages.) I love science-based books about why humans do and think as we do. I love humorous books. This is both! This is the first intelligent book that actually made me laugh out loud. Several times, my wife asked, “What’so funny?” I know several people who should read this book. I may buy a case to give away. Having read this book, I believe we can all be the person we want to be.

If you want a book that will help you outsmart yourself and get out of your own way so you can get things done and have more satisfying experiences, Unfuckology is the book to read. Unfuckology is full of information on what to do to become the person you want to become, advice that is backed up with clear explanations about how human beings are designed. I'm halfway through the book and already find myself taking what I've learned and using it to create solutions for myself where I've been stuck, and frustrated with watching myself be stuck. The information about what works and what doesn't work, and why, helps me create new solutions where the book's advice leaves off.

This is an excellent book. Peppered with personal anectdotes and backed by hard science, this book covers the subject of self empowerment in a humourous, self-depricating manner. The author lobs random expletives and adult themes into the narrative which lightens the mood around an intense subject. The tricks in this book should help anyone to identify negative behaviors and help to iron them out. Even though the book is geared to help those that have issues standing up for themselves, the techniques and science displayed here will be helpful to anyone who has an interest in the human mind and how we behave. Buy it, it's a fun read!

I was totally enthralled at the ease with which Amy communicates extremely complex subject matter with lucid coherence and exposition. As Einstein recommended, “If You Can't Explain it to a Six Year Old, You Don't Understand it Yourself.” Amy certainly excels in this regard and many others.I feel also that your views are in synch with neuroscientist Joseph Ledoux when he distinguishes between the non conscious fear response to an aversive stimuli and the conscious manifestation of fear as an emotion.I found her reference to the concept “embedded cognition” to be extremely enlightening:“Recognizing that the body is often a part of cognition—of thinking—is essential to the formation of the new you.”Expect to be intellectually stimulated and challenged but also expect to laugh; laugh a great deal! Not only is Amy a highly talented and knowledgeable scientist, she demonstrates exceptional comedic wit and insight.I consider this book to be a formidable addition to what I refer to as my Hall of Fame.
