I first learned about Nobody’s Cuter Than You from The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey when she had author Melanie Shankle on the podcast. After I heard Melanie and Jamie giggling on The Happy Hour, I wanted to hear more of Melanie’s voice in her book. I went into the book anticipating a light beach read that would make me walk away feeling grateful for my girlfriends. Mission accomplished, Melanie Shankle. Mission accomplished. The book has 19 short chapters. Melanie goes all the way back to her first best friend and shares stories from all of her most important friendships up until present day. My favorite part was Melanie’s chapter about her annual tradition to get all of her Christmas shopping done over a weekend with her friend, Gulley. I appreciated how Melanie’s introspection interspersed among anecdotes forced me to think about how my friendships shaped and continue to shape me. I struggled with the pace and flow of her narrative, though. While I appreciated Melanie’s lightness and sense of humor, I wanted her to lean into the pain a little more when it happened. As a reader, it made me feel like she didn’t feel comfortable sharing her whole story. I felt like I was being kept at an arm’s length with humor and couldn’t get the full story. At times her humor felt out of place or she’d go on and on about seemingly unnecessary details that didn’t help advance the narrative of friendship. While Melanie’s devotion and affection for her dearest friends shines through, I struggled with how she handled the toughest moments. As a reader, I kept wanting to get back to the details of what was happening in her relationship instead of her interest in the superficial (hairstyles, fashion, etc.). Melanie has a knack for remembering all of those colorful details that take you back to times and places, but I think she took it to a level that distracted from the story. Perhaps it would have made more sense to plug in a few little vignettes. A small “ode to the 80’s” or a “love song to my Honda CR-X” would have been great! Just my $.02. I wish Melanie’s editor had forced her to trim out the fat and keep us along for the ride of the most important details. The chapters felt isolated and read like individual blog posts instead of a narrative weaved together to help us learn more about why Melanie is the woman she is today. In brief: Nobody’s Cuter Than You was a fun, light, vacation read that made me reflect more on the power of friendship, but I don’t think I’d recommend it unless I was giving someone my copy.I shared this review on my blog: [...]

I LOVE Melanie's books! Sparkly Green Earrings and The Antelope in the Living Room were WONDERFUL! Totally delightful reading and both of them would have me laughing so hard I would have tears rolling down my cheeks and would have to stop reading and get a tissue and then start back reading only to start laughing again! I highly recommend those two books. This book was very good. Such a wonderful book about friendships throughout our lives and it did have funny moments, but not the kind in the other two books. But I enjoyed reading it very much and if you have had the blessing of having a lifetime of BFF's enter and exit your life, you will love reading this book about Melanie and her friends throughout her life. It was a blessing! It would be a great gift to give your BFF!

Melanie tells her story by reading it herself. It brought out several emotions in me, beginning with the importance of friends in early childhood. The author was able to provide great depth of her relationships with others her age throughout the years, and the way in which the friendships enriched her life. She shared her feelings and experiences with refreshing honesty. I cried often throughout the book, so keep some tissues handy. A nice read that I enjoyed very much.

This book was really an ode to her own friendships (not friendship in general) which is a sweet idea but not of interest to most other people. It was an account of what happened, sometimes in excruciatingly boring detail, kind of like a Dear Diary. The book started with childhood friendships and just moved on through her life. I was actually surprised to find not one mention of her friendship with Sophie Hudson (Boomama). On the bright side, we now know all about her BFF Gulley. Not sure why I didn't find anything funny - maybe you have to be Texan to appreciate the humour?I actually found the book really, really boring and forced myself to finish reading the book because I received it as a gift from a special friend of mine.I now need to stop putting these blog authors on my list because while the blogs are entertaining, I just feel the writing doesn't translate well to the longer form. I've read two of hers and I won't be reading another :)

I bought this book to for my best friend who was moving, and thought it might be a sweet gesture to skim through some of the stories. I read it first, annotating along the way to give to my best friend, and I was surprised! Melanie's friendship with Gulley reminds me so much of my friendship with my best friend, and I found myself laughing and crying with the characters in the book. Reading about these friends made me cherish my friendships and was touching. Thank you, Melanie, for allowing your readers to get a peek into your life and heart. It was truly inspiring and enjoyable to read. I definitely reccommend!

I love this book and have given multiple copies to special friends in my life. Each chapter can be read on its own (and great book to pick up for quick reading sessions.) Melanie is hysterical and witty. And she sneaks tidbits of wisdom in amongst stories of her crazy antics. I've loved all her books. But this is the one I've bought the most copies of. PERFECT gift.

If I could give Melanie's new book more than five stars I would do it! Read this book if you want to be refreshed and renewed. I love Melanie's writing style. I think she could be anybody's BFF!I liked how Melanie said about having different friends in different seasons of our lives. Being a preacher's kid I moved a few times growing up and I feel like I have friends from different ages that were my best friend from that time and place. As an adult I still keep in contact with the "best" of those best friends but they are not in my everyday life. I'm glad that she pointed that out because it makes sense but I never thought about it that way. Well done Melanie Shankle!

Christoper is amazing. This guy actually DID what this book promotes! Take his advice, he knows what he is talking about. He is experienced and not just copying research. Christopher is the real deal.

I am writing my own autobiography and I've kind of stalled a bit. However, the basic, simple truths in this book have given me the push that I needed. The book is very helpful and straight forward, giving step-by-step instructions on how to get a book published. It is written in a very easy to understand format and follow the instruction. It literally has been a God-send and much needed confirmation for me to push on with my autobiography. I'm going to buy the Marketing book next and I will be on my way again! This time I will succeed! Thanks to Christopher and his beautiful wife, Stacy for helping me to conquer this fear and lose the excuses! Very encouraging and uplifting! I've had the pleasure to meet them both and they are very encouraging, uplifting, good people as well. Wishing you continued success as you fulfill your God-given purpose by helping others fulfill their dreams and God's purpose for them. Alesia a.k.a.. "DG"

For those of us who have a book inside of us Christopher Mitchell's book is essential to get published. It is a fascinating and easy read and outlines just what you have to do. I loved the book and hope to get mine published and overcome the fear factor.

Very easy to read book with a no nonsense approach of how to get a book published within a week. The information was spot on, and most importantly, it worked for me. What are you waiting for? Get the book and get published!

I had written 280 pages and was stuck! I should have known Christopher a year or two ago - could've avoided so much aggravation. With document in one device, Christopher's instructions in another, I started with a new page and was finally good to go! Christopher Mitchell is as brilliant as he is down to earth and perceptive. As Michael Puskas says, he's the real deal.

This book tells you exactly what you need to do (after you write the book) to prepare your manuscript for publication and HOW to do it. It even tells you how to market your first book to develop a fan base.

This book was so encouraging, it made me want to stop my fiction story and find something else to write about! Most of the information applies to non-fiction, but the formatting and marketing apply to everyone. Why complicate something when there's an easier way?

The 175 Best Camp Games: A Handbook for Leaders, by Kathleen Fraser

Review

The games in this book run the gamut of camp requirements. Some are perfect for breaking the ice among new campers. Others are run-them-ragged games, designed to tire the participants. Still others are designed to let everybody win. There is advice for dealing with rule breakers and for keeping things fun, fair and safe.... This book would be great for camp leaders, counselors-in-training and anyone looking for creative group activities that require little or no special equipment. (Brenda Hoerle Guelph Mercury/Waterloo Region Record 2010-02-27)Anyone who is faced with the challenge of keeping a group of children entertained knows the value of a great game. A game can stimulate children physically and mentally, provide social interaction, teach new skills and most importantly be a lot of fun. But if you find yourself relying on distant memories of your own childhood games then this book will be a big help. There are plenty of games to choose from; some may be familiar, like I Spy or Blind Man's Bluff, but for most people this will be a wealth of new activities. (Terry Peters North Shore News 2010-01-03)Three former campers, leaders and now full-fledged teachers have compiled a treasure-trove of games and activities suitable for children in early-elementary through upper-middle school grades [and] appropriate for a number of situations, from schoolyard play to gyms, backyards and community centers.... Clear, easy-to-follow instructions include number of players, equipment and game plan, augmented by Lum's humorous cartoon illustrations and completed with extra hints and tips for leaders in sidebar-style notations. Tips range from "modifying for abilities" to "peaking games," in which suggestions are given for ending on a high note before kids get bored or frustrated.... A great resource. (Kirkus Reviews 2009-10-15)The purpose of this book is to gather and describe all the best camp games under one cover... The authors collectively have many years of experience as campers, camp leaders and eventually teachers. This is evident in the variety of games they present as well as in the way the information is presented. The handbook is very well organized and easy to understand... Instructions are presented clearly.... One of the best features of the handbook is the Tips for Leaders which...include dealing with rulebreakers, pros and cons of elimination games, and ways to modify games.... The illustrations are a great supplement to the instructions...The illustrator clearly made an effort to include children of many different races, sizes and abilities in her illustrations. The 175 Best Camp Games would be a valuable resource to not only camp counsellors, but anyone who works with young people. Parents, teachers, recreation leaders, and childcare providers would likely find many uses for the wide array of games described in this handbook. (Claire Perrin Canadian Materials 2010-04-16)This Canadian book is a treasure trove of ideas and a great resource for summer fun. (North Bay Nugget 2010-07-17)This is a perfect resource for any group leader, camp counselor, recreation director or parent interested in being active with young adults..... possibly one of the best resources for camp or after-school leaders in print. (Green Teacher)This book is a treasure trove of ideas and a great resource for summer fun. (North Bay Nugget 2010-07-17)For the first-time counsellor, knowing how to engage campers can seem a daunting task, but with a little guidance and creativity, games can not only entertain children, they can set a group tone for the counsellor, as well. (Calgary Sun 2015-04-15)

I bought this book almost by accident - I was looking for play activities for adults - but it's become a favorite resource for group activities. Its geared to kids and great for kids, it's just as good for adults.A couple quick things:Many of the games are easy to play and easy to explain. There aren't lots of complex rules. You can adapt the games to your space and group size very easily as well. Most of the games are quick and easy to play but you can adjust them so you can play longer or do multiple rounds.I know it is entitled "camp games" but I've used them in weekday youth groups, adults seminars and even workplace settings. They get people up and moving and talking and laughing.

I bought this book to find activity ideas I might adapt for (adult) leadership training programs as well as games for kids. It did not disappoint. The authors offer a wide variety of engaging activities and explain them all clearly. I have been able to adapt a few for adults. My daughter is soon off to be an RA at a summer sleep-away camp for kids 8-12, and she is taking the book with her.

I'm a program director for a week-long youth camp each summer, and this is one of the best resources I have for large group games. Number of players and equipment needed are listed first for each game, and the games are sorted into categories from "take it easy" to "run them ragged."

Lots of fun ideas for camp games. A bit young for the age group I was specifically looking to entertain, but the ideas are adaptable and, hey, fun is fun.

Love this book. Games are classified according to level of activity and number of participants. It includes games for around the campfire, night games, water games, large and small group games. Great resource for our American Heritage Girls Troop. We will be using it for years to come.

Bought this book for my 4 kids to play at home with each other or with their friends at our homeschool group. It is a huge hit with unique games they loved. They played with it all day the day I gave to them and can't wait to play the games you need more people to play.

These games are better then the ones I learned in biyscouts, and you can keep your clothes on.

My daughter was applying for a camp counselor position and was told part of the interview would be to demonstrate a camp game. She used one of the games from this book and the director really liked it. She must have made a good impression because she got the job!

The Seven Addictions and Five Professions of Anita Berber: Weimar Berlin's Priestess of Depravity, by Mel Gordon

From Publishers Weekly

The life and death of Anita Berber (1899-1928), who was what we would now call a performance artist, are inseparable from the frantically erotic climate of Weimar Germany, as this tabloid-style tell-all biography by Gordon (Voluptuous Panic) makes abundantly clear. A child of divorce, the Dresden-raised Berber began dancing at 16, earning major Berlin reviews and working in film by 1918; she began dancing nude in 1919, and did films titled Prostitution and Different from the Others that same year. Gordon provides numerous photos and titillating anecdotes taking readers from that point to Berber's death in a Beirut nightclub (including her alleged sexual enslavement to a woman and the woman's 15-year-old daughter). This intriguing, haphazard document offers a plethora of clues into a the life of a woman whose repertoire included a dance entitled "The Corpse on the Dissecting Table." Berber's life cries out for thorough study, such as that recently accorded inspired Dadaist Baroness Else von Freytag-Loringhoven.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The book kinda jumps around and it doesn't focus on any real timeline . Ms. Berber's story is interesting and it covers a time period in Germany that is often ignored . After WW1 and before Hitler takes power . It was like the wild west in terms of freedom of expression in Germany at that time . The book really left me wondering how her career would have turned out if she would have gotten off the drugs and focused on her career . I would guess she would have left Germany once Hitler come into power and I wonder if she had come to America how her career would have went . She obviously had talent but as we've seen so many time , drugs and alcohol simply ended what ever chance of her having a long career . So we will never know what could have been . Decent book that I would recommend if the price stays low . There are much better books that cover the Weimar Republic and the entertainment industry during that time period . So I would only recommend this one if you are just interested in Ms Berbers story .

This is a quick read: most of it is double-spaced; there are a lot of pictures; there are pages of expressionist poetry by Berber or one of her husbands; there are descriptions of her dance routines. It's an interesting book just the same and I enjoyed reading it. It took me two days. Gordon put together a pleasing biographical narrative from a number of foreign sources, including non-English autobiographies, German magazines, and newspapers of the day. He neither extols Anita as a liberated woman nor labels her self-destruction as the death of a reprobate. He doesn't psychoanalyze her post facto but recounts her actions--many of which were seriously outrageous--in a matter-of-fact manner. Consequently the narrative may strike some as remote and indifferent or, on the other hand, as an attempt not to get in the way of a good story that is absurd in its own right. Berber was an expressionist dancer in Weimar Berlin as Germany changed from a self-assured, tightly controlled, buttoned-down society to one awash with cynicism, war guilt, debt and anxiety. The smart urban set who could still afford a nightlife cast their sentiments with avant-garde artistes who had protested Wilhelmian sexual and lifestyle repression through dance and graphic art for years. This became the "in" thing. Turning nineteen in this atmosphere the red-haired Ms. Berber, daughter of a dancer and trained as a dancer herself, ran wholly amuck with help from her bohemian friends. Pronouncedly narcissistic (she was a teen-ager after all), stoned continuously on cocaine and brandy, paid well to titillate audiences with nude dancing, there was little she would not do. Gordon quotes accounts of the day that she had a beautiful, boyish body and genuine talent as an experimental dancer. Her sexual paramours included the young, the old, men, women, and children. She enjoyed appearing nude in public places like restaurants and hotel lobbies to cause a stirr. Within a few years fickle popular trends shifted away from uninhibited dances that celebrated sex and drugs. Added to this, Ms. Berber's young body was slowly breaking down under a nightly onslaught of drugs and alcohol coupled with strenuous physical demands of dancing. Her cocaine habit turned her impulsively angry; she lashed out at critics in the audience with empty Champaign bottles; her bookings at nightclubs dried up. By the age of twenty-eight she was no longer avant-garde and was forced to tour. The next year she developed fatal tuberculosis and came home to Berlin to die. She was buried, according to Gordon, in a pauper's grave. The reader may make of that what he or she will--as Gordon would have it. Either she was a beautiful spark of liberation or a young girl living her short life out in a fool's paradise of her own and other's making.

Fascinating inform rarely found, but I wanted more in almost every chaper than what was supplied. It sent me searching for more books on her and that period in time.

This is choppy and more like a scrap book. I feel I wasted my money on the book.

Interesting but nothing special.

As there are few similar works that speak to this era and the people, it is an interesting book. While the book contains many wonderful period photos, the writing is uneven and meandering. Whole chapters go by without mentioning Anita at all. I think this was a missed opportunity to capture the person and period of the time. I wasn't left liking Anita very much, though that isn't the author's fault really, it is what it is. I might recommend this book solely for its value as being one of few that speak to this time. One just wishes there were better efforts out there than this. A narrative biography of Anita's life would have been more welcomed than what this book put forth.

I liked the book , she was an amazing lady

This book is very well illustrated, and that alone is probably worth the five stars, but it also contains some narrative-style history about Anita Berber and her role in the volatile world of Weimar-era Berlin. It is not exceedingly deep history, so if you are seeking a very scholarly monograph this may not meet your needs, but as a general guide and a way to place Anita Berber in the general context of Berlin in the 1920s, this is a good book.

The story is a page turner, but Graysmith is obviously not a writer. He jumps from 1st person to 3rd person and back and forth without warning. There are times where you find yourself losing track of where you are while you're reading this. His writing proves to be disorganized, jumbling and rambles on. Midway into this intriguing story, I found myself skipping to the end. His research on Zodiac is evident and thorough, and commendable, but even he admits Zodiac was an obsession of his.Overall, the topic is what sold this story to publishers, because it certainly wasn't his writing. Graysmith should have stuck to cartoons. The writing didn't impress me.

I’m still pretty earlier into the chapters but there’s a ton of information in this book that paints a picture of the possible perpetrator that I had no clue about. Granted I’ve not read a ton of books about this case but I’ve seen quite a few documentaries and didn’t see in any of them such solid leads that paint a picture of someone who is not perhaps as smart as originally thought, who may have gotten inspiration from a movie, who was almost certainly in the military (I knew this one was a possibility but didn’t realize it’s all but confirmed by his boot prints)...as a therapist I’m very interested in understand human behavior and this book is giving me a much clearer picture of who this fiend was and what made him tick. I hope with the new advances in genetic genealogy being used in law enforcement they will finally be able to give him a name whether or not he’s still alive...

I bought this book for a book report paper I needed to write for college. I loved the Zodiac film by David Fincher, and this was written by Robert Greysmith, who was a consultant on the film. Great story full of suspense and still is an unsolved case in the San Francisco area.

A must for any true crime reader, the author Robert Graysmith's research in to the zodiac murders is thorough and gives the reader an infomative insight in to these truly baffling and shocking crimes.

Watched the feature film and was intrigued by the story so I bought this and the followup book making the case against the prime suspect who, will sadly never stand trial.Too bad the various departments involved couldnt cooperate and share information.Might have solved this years ago.I share a birthday and the ability to write with either hand with Arthur Lee Allen.Creepy.

After watching the film I decided to read the book by Graysmith and I'm glad I did. It's meticulously laid out, with more details that can be given in a film, even one that is 2.5 hours.

I bought this book after seeing the movie, hoping it would clear up a few things that were glossed over in the movie. But even after reading the book twice, I still have more questions than answers. One thing is quite clear, that Mr. Graysmith has decided who the real Zodiac is, and only presents the facts that support his finding. Personally, I would have preferred to be presented with more of the facts, so I can make up my own mind. It's true what others have said, about the book being not very well written. It's clumsy and hard to follow at times, and all the name changes definitely don't help matters. But even with all that, it's gripping and hard to put down. I finished it in two sittings the first time through. I think before I spend any money on "Zodiac Unmasked", I'll look for it in the library. I have a hunch I should have bought that one and not this one, anyway.

Because I like true crime, I'd wanted to read this book for a long time. The author made it tough sledding. I can't say how I would have fixed this book structurally; the author presented it chronologically. Perhaps I'd have advised him to concentrate more on the murders that are definitely attributable to the Zodiac and spent less time following up on blind alleys. Unfortunately the story didn't build to a climax because there was none. Rather, the book meandered. Also, it suffered from a profound lack of character development. The author was a major player in the story, but he managed to nearly bury himself. What were his motives in spending years pursuing this story? What did the cops in the various jurisdictions think of him? What impact did his obsession have on his personal life? He shares none of this with the reader.

Had heard good things about this but it was too "light" for my taste. I expected a deeper read that had more forensic detail. It read like a fluffy People magazine (expanded) article.
