Bea Johnson had been living the type of life that we're all supposed to envy: huge house, fancy parties, "Barbie-like platinum blonde hair," botox injections... She was Looking Good. But she realized that a lot of the zest was gone from her life. The author was uniquely positioned to conduct an experiment. She had the luxury of choice. She chose to change her environment, by putting household items into storage and renting an apartment while she searched for her pared-down dream home, going back to the simplicity of her frugal childhood on a farm. Judge her if you wish, but the author has done all the research and experimentation to point the way for the rest of us who wish to live more sustainably.Ms. Johnson doesn't just recycle - she avoids even having to recycle. We have all heard the slogan, reduce, reuse, recycle. But the author does it one better. She adds: refuse. Yes, we are to refuse anything that comes with a big disposal burden. Extreme? Probably. But at times I have found myself deciding not to buy something because of the packaging itself, so maybe I'm not so very different after all.Ms. Johnson admits to foraging for moss to use in place of toilet paper, but then decided that it was best to buy the kind of toilet paper that comes with individual rolls wrapped in paper - instead of plastic. When she had a couple of broken drinking glasses, she actually took the time to research online and called her local recycler, to be sure that the broken shards could be accepted at the recycling plant. She not only brings her own shopping bags, she brings her own containers (BYOC) for bulk items and even bakery and deli items. From experience, she explains that it's best to act as if it's completely ordinary to hand the deli people your glass jar for the cheese or lunch meat you're buying. Her bakery is trained to put her weekly bread allotment into a pillowcase, which gets washed of course.By going to an extreme, she has learned a lot and is willing to share it with us. You might decide that some of these ideas are simply too outlandish to employ realistically in your own life. You might live in an apartment and find it impossible to compost. You might decide that the effort of reducing your own household waste any further is too much trouble.Or you might find a few new ideas that fit right into your life.I already live a conservative lifestyle. I shop the bulk section and cook from scratch. I get most of my clothes from resale shops. It takes us three months to fill a trash bag with things that cannot be recycled or composted. We have dumb phones and a TV antenna on the roof, but that doesn't mean we aren't incredibly tech savvy. We just choose not to afford many modern conveniences. This book actually had a few things to teach me. One of the ideas that leapt off the pages at me was the idea of letting the containers in my pantry limit the amount of bulk items I stock at any given time. Why keep five kinds of rice and six kinds of beans in stock at all times? By planning the menu more carefully and being more disciplined about using the food that was currently in the pantry, I could reduce the volume considerably. Not everyone can go to the Farmer's Market every single week, followed by the bulk store for anything else. But I can base my habits on this idea and visit each once per month. Instead of one jar for grain, maybe three or four. Less than I'm stocking now!I always hate having to throw away a plastic bag when and if I buy something from the deli. Why not hand them washable plastic containers? (Safer than breakable glass.) It's worth a try. Bring the empty spice bottle to the bulk spice section to refill, instead of having to throw away the tiny spice bag. It simply requires having the bottle weighed before adding the spice.See? Simple changes can be painless if you're committed to reducing the amount of stuff that gets used once and thrown away.Give this book a read if you're curious about simplifying and reducing waste in your wardrobe, your hygiene routine, and your home office. This book is full of DIY treasures including a pancake batter recipe, formulas for cleaning supplies, how to make kohl to enhance your eyes, how to use sugar instead of wax for silky legs, and instructions for making a mason bee house.Yes you can get these ideas off the internet too, but they're all in one place in this book. Rather than buy books, I try to borrow them from the library. Why store a book that I will not access regularly? With this book, it's a tough call. There are so many inspiring ideas, I'm sure I'll check this one out again in the future.

I'm a 26 year old single mother of a four year old. I live in VA. I work full time and go to school.I am enjoying reading the reviews people are posting either posting a wealth of excuses or poking holes in every single thing that isn't eco friendly: "LOOK THEY HAVE VINYL FLOORING!!!" There is always going to be someone critiquing what they themselves aren't even doing. Heck our entire nation does it during American Idol.Read it with an open mind and don't try to do everything at once. I started reading her blog in 2011. Yes, I still bought the book (e-reader version) because instead of like a blog where the entries are written when inspiration strikes this book is more organized and does offer more info. When I tried this stuff I did not hold myself to all of her standards and I knew that these ideas would never take over in my home. When I got rid of all my excess in 2011 I made 2,500$ by selling it off on Amazon and got a notable tax deduction for all the donations. I also felt like I could breath. When I bought flour sack clothes I did with the intention of saving "some money" but I "knew" we'd always need paper towels. The joke was on me since it just struck me a few months back that the last paper towels I bought was in 2011. That was not a conscious change it just happened because we haven't needed them. Any time someone uses them they demand to know where I got them from because they really do work that well. Our utilities have not increased at all due to washing and drying them. Our utilities actually decreased because I had our city come pick up our second garbage can that we no longer needed.I'm using a double edged razor for shaving and now instead of spending 17$ for 5 cartridge heads I spent .37$ on a razor blade that lasts me quite some time before needing to be replaced. The first time I used it was awkward but after that it was smooth sailing. People look at it like its a rudimentary and I'm constantly asked "How don't you cut yourself!?" or told "Well that'd be fine for the legs but elsewhere would be a disaster!" Um it has a guard and no it works just fine EVERYwhere and its the first razor I've ever owned that hasn't left we with razor bumps in the sensitive areas. I'm saving a great deal of money here. A friend of mine just bought one and for the past week I've been getting texts almost every morning when he shaves "OMG WHY DID THEY EVER INVENT DISPOSABLES!!"We used reusable bags for produce and canvas sacks for ALL shopping not just groceries. We get compliments on them. Sometimes I'll get the .05 cent credit for all the produce bags because the cashier is enthused about them. I started buying the glass bottles of milk for my daughter when I tasted it I stood there stunned because I honestly had never tasted milk that good. It's not about living like a hippie. I know I don't live like one. It's not all about hugging trees either. I think it's about taking responsibility for our actions. We tell our kids to clean their rooms and yet when they say it's done we still check the closets and under the bed to make sure they didn't stuff anything there. How do we call ourselves adults when we're stuffing just on a larger scale.Seriously, read with an open mind and try things. The money you save using the tips exceeds the price of the book--- immensely.

Very good book to start with, though it can feel overwhelming at times. I find that's simply because there's so many ideas and things I didn't think of that I want to incorporate STAT. I love that she has lists of basic necessities in each room, how to make your own or find "zero waste" alternatives. She gives tips on dealing with people who don't understand why you are doing this including at the grocery store. I live in a studio apartment, so I have been using the book to motivate me as I purge each room. My apartment has never been cleaner, better looking, and feels (mostly) stress free. Some of her ideas are a bit much for me, but you don't have to use EVERY idea. Even if you find a handful of ideas or walk away with knowledge of what happens to plastic/disposable items, that's a win!

#558,039 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was written in 2008 (2nd Edition). It’s 10 years old as of the day I’m writing this. The book is written for the complete technophobe who is afraid of computers and doesn’t know ANYTHING AT ALL about recording their voice. There are some good principles and basic information, but much of it is outdated now. For example, the book covers the topic of burning your production to CD or DVD for delivery and backing up production files to a CD library. Today, many computers are sold without even having a CD drive onboard. In contrast, the book gives one single sentence (pg. 41, pp 2) on Cloud storage. Cloud storage backup is the norm today with many opinions from iCloud to Dropbox to many others. Today, your agents and clients are very unlikely to want your work submitted on CDs. It costs money to ship and it costs money to store somewhere. They take up physical space and they costs you extra money to produce (discs, jewel boxes, labels, etc.) Almost no one wants a CD anymore. So a large amount of text in the book ends up being devoted to an outdated technology that is quickly dying.Even so, the worst part of the book was the constant attempt at comedy to the point that a good 2/3 of the book is unnecessary quips and jokes. It’s like listening to a silly radio morning show between 3 people who are too busy trying to be cute to actually get the news out. Two authors and the editor all try to be funny in this book. The humor is decent. It’s not like they aren’t clever, the are. But I found myself skimming over the pages to get past to silliness to find the information. We’re well past 2017 now, pass this book up and move on! Personally, I recommend Bill DeWees’s book “How to Start and Build a 6 Figure Voice Over Business” over this book.

I was looking for a book to explain how to record one's voice on a home computer. This very practical, easy-to-understand guide to voice-over recording comes through loud and clear, with excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Best of all, these guys "get" direct-to-computer USB recording, mixing software, the Internet, and other modern technologies, integrating them with timeless recording advice gathered in real careers.Hogan and Fisher tell you what works, and why what you think might work, won't. Rather than showing off their geek-speak chops, they use regular English and even poke fun at the technical lingo in the process of demystifying it. Other home recording books lavish excessive technical verbiage on how to pad your walls. These guys offer practical solutions (including "move") and even show how to make a portable acoustic foam-lined mic box. You will discover exactly what you need to buy -- although the USB-audio-interfaces section is surprisingly short -- and how to use it. They won't tell you exactly what mic to buy, though, and it's for your own good.Warning: the jokes are abundant, mostly terrible and distracting, especially the comments from "Prunella," whose parenthetic remarks, although they mercifully trail off, are the editorial equivalent of lip smacks. (The full harshness of this comment will be appreciated upon reading the otherwise excellent text.) Failed humor notwithstanding, the tone ends up being warmly self effacing and encouragingly user-oriented. These guys take seriously the job of helping you, including a strong index and glossary, and plenty of URLs.Chapter 12, Advanced Production Techniques, is alone worth the price of the book. Embedded in an economically worded step-by-step script for editing recordings are the exact frequencies to manipulate to address problems such as thin sound, dull recording, and sibilance. You end up feeling as though you have two buddies in the recording business; telling you every tip they know, and hammering on mistakes that could ruin your project. Don't let the light tone fool you: this is a seriously great book!

While I am not averse to keeping up with the changes in technology I was certainly cowed by the prospect of delving into this much technology at such a broad price range. This was especially so due to the goal of producing income from this endeavor. The authors of this book have given far more digestible information than I was able to glean from the myriad of websites and chat-rooms devoted to VO. Having waited until I finished the book to proceed with purchasing my equipment I am awaiting its' arrival. I will update this review in light of my attempts to record based on what this book provides. As of now, I am pleased to say that I have a working idea of what I am getting myself into and have thusly justified the expense, both to myself AND my wife (the book made all the difference there!).UPDATE 5/4/2013I have made some major purchases based on priciples of buying that this book sets forth and have not been disapointed! While my progress has been slowed by the birth of a child (read: lots of time and $ spent on diapers!) I am looking forward to picking things back up. So far I have exceeded the quality expected by clients within the smalltime arena I am currently producing work. I feel pretty confident as well that I will continue to do so for some time with the versatility afforded by my purchases. At this rate I am hoping to be able to make at least half my income through VO within the next 2-3 years.

Having recorded commercials in studios for years, it was time to go with the trend of setting up a home recording studio. This book was highly recommended by a few professionals in the business. I found it easy to read as well as humorous and motivational. In just a few easy steps, I was able to piece together a home recording studio. I also gleaned many valuable voice over techniques and tips from the book. I continue to recommend it to friends and acquaintances that want to get into the voice over business or who are already working voice over artists. It is just a good book to have in your library if you are a voice over artist.

Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History

Review

In supple readings of difficult, sometimes disturbing, yet always fascinating texts and contexts, Heather Love demonstrates that if we are to seriously engage with the queer past we must welcome the shame, fear, loneliness, obstinacy, and indeed backwardness that we encounter there. For all that, Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History, with its beautiful prose, stunning theoretical sophistication, careful attention to detail, as well as a hard-headed respect for the artists and critics whom it treats, is a stunningly hopeful book. Throughout Love links her critiques of celebratory queer criticism with a passionate concern for the opening up of progressive forms of intellectual and political life. (Robert F. Reid-Pharr, author of Once You Go Black: Choice, Desire and the Black American Intellectual)Heather Love is the Marcel Proust of contemporary theory. Disappointed love and tormented desire find a compassionate commentator in Love, who turns to queer history's tragic, lonely, and despairing figures, not to sublimate or to save them, but to recognize and to respect them. A wise, worldly, and winning book. (Diana Fuss, Professor of English, Princeton University)Now that, in the latest twist of tolerance, gays are required to flaunt their well-adjustedness, Feeling Backward may feel backward indeed as it contemplates the pain, anger, isolation, and sheer crankiness, prominent in literary figures of our queer past. But it is harder than ever to pause for thought―and not simply revulsion or compassion―over these prickly and unwholesome feelings, which lead an increasingly closeted existence in ourselves. Heather Love is in astonishing possession of the negative capability required by her undertaking, and her analytic finesse proves well-matched to her ethical delicacy. This book―together with the constellation of work it gathers around itself―belongs to what may deservedly be called a new wave in queer studies. (D.A. Miller, University of California, Berkeley)Like Lot's wife, I like to look over my shoulder too much at salty scenes from the shameful past-- though I've yet to turn into a pillar of the community. The delightfully named Heather Love makes all that hankering after pre-gay sex on Hampstead Heath seem slightly romantic and illuminates why and how the queer past is not always about waiting for Stonewall and disco to happen. (Mark Simpson, Editor of Anti-Gay)What does it mean to "feel backward"? By turning to, rather than away from, the texts of shame, injury, loss and failure that populate a queer past, Heather Love manages to shift queer studies away from the straight and narrow and back onto the slippery slope of stigma and dismay. Love refuses the triumphalist accounts of gay and lesbian progress and she insists on the spoiling of identity and on the political importance of "bad feelings." This is a rigorous book, a brave book, a wildly original and unrelenting book. It will be a central text in the backward future of queer studies. (Judith Halberstam, author of In a Queer Time and Place)It seems to me this discontinuous book is a little bit like the stations of the cross. I mean if you like to stop, and most of us do. And sometimes the street was filled with us. All thinking about someone else. They are the past inside our present. He just put one in a cab. I like Feeling Backward... a lot. (Eileen Myles, poet)In this interesting study of modernist literature and the challenges of history, the author encourages readers to consider how early-20th-century moments once labeled embarrassing, troubling, and evil continue to have an affect. Drawing from the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan, the Marxist philosophy of Raymond Williams, and other schools of thought, Love rereads the works of Radclyffe Hall, Walter Pater, Willa Cather, and Sylvia Townsend Warner--often considered to turn away from an image of a brighter future for queer readers--in order to consider the "backward feelings" of shame, depression, and regret and describe how these texts have fallen into critical disrepute among queer theorists and scholars...This book is for those interested in the politics and history of emotion and sensibility. (J. Pruitt Choice 2008-04-01)Feeling Backward is a brilliant work...Love looks fearlessly at literature from the past in which circumstances related to gender tend to produce victims rather than heroines. She establishes that our literature has been affected by homophobia and demands that we consider the implications of this fact. Love contends that we need to look at history and social politics less like Lot's wife, who's destroyed by looking back, and more like Odysseus, who listens to the past but isn't destroyed by it. The past haunts us whether we acknowledge it or not; we may be "looking forward," as we like to assure ourselves, even as we're "feeling backward." (Martha Miller Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide 2008-07-01)Feeling Backward is a brilliant book that attempts the "impossible" and succeeds. Using Michel Foucault and Eve Sedgwick as theoretical touchstones, and incorporating Raymond Williams's "structures of feeling," Heather Love "feels backward" to reimagine and connect with aspects of a queer past that had been rendered invisible. In doing so--in risking (as she puts it) the fate of Lot's wife in turning back to revisit a painful past--she embraces the ruins, the "fugitive dead," the loneliness and failures and all the "negative affect" that need to be reclaimed as part of that history...Love moves bravely backwards to that murky time, the "queer life before Stonewall," and then crosses the modernist line backwards to feel what has been lost. In doing so she has made a profoundly imaginative and powerful contribution to queer history. (Rick Taylor Feminist Review 2009-07-01)

The book is pretty straight forward and concise. I noticed a few typos, but I re-read the section a few times and was able to make sense of it. Mr. Cardoza doesn't sugar-coat gambling; he makes you aware that you will have losing streaks and advises you to "never gamble with any money that you are emotionally attached to." I plan to read the book a few more times to get a solid feel for the concepts and then hit the casino. Get yourself some basic strategy cards along with the book.

Nice informative book with clear instruction.

Cardoza has captured the perfect methodology for understanding and enjoying the game of Blackjack for those of us who want to have the greatest chance of winning the game. The handbook is well-structured and well-presented and will be of significant benefit to those who like not only to play, but to play with confidence and greater pleasure.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to increase their blackjack skills or would just like to learn the game.

Got this for my brother he enjoys it.

This book isn't really very original. I suppose that it is a good book for a new reader who is attempting to go from amature to a more substantial player. However, if you have already read a few basic books on Blackjack you are already past the point of this book. He essentially gets into "Optimal Basic Strategy" which is useful but not original to Cardoza. My biggest concern in the book is it seems he is primarily telling the reader to find a single deck blackjack game to win money at. That is problamatic for those of us who do not live near Nevada where they play single deck. At my local Casino where I play they have 8-deck games. The biggest issue of all is that he says on the title of the book that this is strategies for the non-counter but than points out how much more profitable and easy it is to count cards. If you want to really make money than find a book that teaches card counting. If you need help with your hand to hand descion making than this book could be useful to tighten up your game.

This book is a must-own if you are serious about playing blackjack

All you need to get better at blackjack without counting. Simple and straightforward.
