what an antique.no ebook.it is very old with no plans for an update shame on professors still using this.most examples are unrelatable "like going to a machine with 256mb ram""all hard drives are and always will be thousands of times slower than ram"this type of stuff is heavily, HEAVILY, mixed into every topic. it makes reading the topic incredibly tedious and a slow page turner.many of the examples in this book were old when the book was published, making it hard to relate to his advice and stay focused on the material.would you buy a book on automotive repair based on 20 year old vehicles?save your money, if your prof is somehow still using this book, google the topics on the syllabus for a primer instead.

I have seen good C programming tutorials, and this is not one. It isn't very descriptive. It will introduce you to new library functions and not give a good explanation on it, and then it rarely describes the code snipets. The C Primer Plus by SAMS is far superior to this for learning C. Having said that, this book is decent in its coverage for UNIX system calls with C, in that it is easier for a beginner to understand the code snipets in this book as compared to other books I have seen. Other books I have seen require you to at least already be an intermediate C programmer, and use examples that require you to study the complex code snipets before you can begin to understand what is being accomplished with the system calls.The author/publisher hasn't updated this book with regard to hardware, and it talks about 286's, 386's, 486's and Pentium processors. It considers 16 bit and 32 bit processing, and it puts too much emphasis on 16 bit, when every compiler I have seen for C is 32 bit. It even gives suggestions based on 16 bit technology. It references DOS, and if anyone is still running DOS, they shouldn't be reading a book about programming. They should be reading about survival skills and moving to Montana and building a bomb shelter.So, to learn C, this isn't a good book. If you are dealing with the C/UNIX environment and are a beginner, the end of this book is decent for understanding system calls, as long as you already understand C from some better, more up to date source.

It needs a bit of updating for more modern computers.

This book did an amazing job of introducing many important concepts about C, and C in UNIX.The description of the material is very clear, and the examples are well thought out.If you're looking for a beginner/intermediate text on C and UNIX, this is THE book to get.

Learning C and Unix at the same time is the best way to learn both.

The C Unix Programmer's Guide was the only book I could find that provided useful background information as well as thoughtful, applicable coding examples. What impressed me most is the fact that all the information found in the man pages on C as well as further insight was combined into an easily readable and searchable format. As a student of computer science, I was familiar with Borland/Microsoft C++, but I had no previous experience with C or Unix. This book helped me get an A (one of three) in Operating Systems! While my classmates struggled on assignments, I was able to find exactly what I needed to complete the assignments on time. I truly believe that without this book I would not have performed nearly as well. Thank you Mr. Bacon for writing such a great book!

I wish this had been my First C programming book. It teaches all the basics required for you to start some worthful programming under *nix. It doesn't go into as many details for e.g., as given in 'C programming: A modern Approach by King but it still gives many details on what things are. It starts with basics of Unix and provides a lot of information on the C development tools in *nix. A very good starting point for learning programming in C under *nix.

Cannonball Adderley covered the gamut in jazz, from saxophonist and bandleader to producer and educator. Diabetes complicated by poor diet and obesity led to his death at the relatively young age of 46. The author covers all aspects of Adderley's life in just 162 pages of text, not including the basic discography and source list. Among areas covered are his and brother Nat's nurturing childhoods, his fortuitous early success in New York, his association with Miles Davis, the various incarnations of his quintet and the ebb and flow of its popularity related to "hit" songs (Dis Here, Work Song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, etc.), his positive (Riverside) and negative (Mercury and Capitol) experiences with record companies, his devotion to jazz education, and his support of the civil rights movement. Among the many interesting factoids: his mini-stroke in 1958 at age 30, his nervous breakdown some years later, and his firing of Charles Lloyd on-the-spot at the end of a recording session. The most obvious errors detected include calling Yusef Lateef an avant garde musician, and labeling Alvin Batiste and Ernie Watts rock musicians, as well as misspelling pianist and composer Friedrich Gulda's last name "Gulder." Overall, Adderley admirers should find this bio informative and to-the-point about the tragically shortened career of this highly intelligent, enthusiastically outgoing, and very talented jazz master.

I loved this book. I found out some things about Cannonball I didn't know. For instance he was a diabetic, I had heard he was a heroin addict and that was not the case, unfortunately for Cannonball he had a huge appetite and his weight definitely did not help him in the end. He was a very intelligent musician and also was very good at interacting with people. I also liked finding out his wife Olga was the woman who played Bill Cosby's sister-in-law in the early 70's Bill Cosby show. They had a good marriage until he passed. You also will find out his dealings with the record companies and how musicians such as Miles Davis and Quincy Jones were involved in his life as well. Although not a autobiography I still found myself a little moved after reading the book as I feel he passed too soon an 47. I guess that is always how one feels when one of the greats passes away at an early time in one's life . Good job by the author in my opinion.

This is s good beginners guide to the music of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Nothing very new is revealed here but the book is still a valuable source of information on someone who was one of the greatest voices of alto saxophone and arguably one of the best bandleaders ever. Adderley was also an educator and one wishes he had lived much longer as his influence and his personality is much needed in today's Jazz scene.

Have been a Cannonball fan for a very long time. The book is knowledgeable and well done.Hopefully this will foster a more in-depth personal book

It's good to finally have a biography of the great Cannonball Adderley. It's strength is that through the collaboration of Cannonball's wife Olga and former associate David Axelrod there is perspective on the man that is not available elsewhere.What's missing is a musical analysis of what made Cannonball great. It's one thing to survey the man's recorded output and describe the commercial success of each project. It would be quite another to have musicians explain Cannonball's essential position as an instrumental stylist. Cannonball Adderley's hits have long ago come and gone, but his contribution to musical vocabulary will long remain a part of American music.

I loved this book! The format is presented on 3 levels, so that it can be read to/by a wide age range. I can honestly say that, as an adult, I learned some interesting things from it. The pictures were technically accurate, clear and relevant. I also liked that it touches on many types of engineering. An overall delight and a great addition to any child's library. I would definitely recommend it!

Gave this as a gift to my nephew (but REALLY it was for my engineer brother in law), they love it!

I'm a huge puzzle fan, and I enjoy these more than Sudoku, or any other logic puzzle I've tried so far. Their elegant simplicity is amazing.. no algebra or higher math required, or even decimals or fractions. Everything is simple integer math, and the only equation you need to know is area = length x height. Some of them (the best ones) it just doesn't seem like they've given you enough information to solve, but if you keep at it you finally get that ah-HA! moment. I've spent days staring at some. These are so clever, and fun. Make sure you pick up volume 1 too. I hope there's a volume 3 soon.

As a math teacher and puzzle enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for new logic puzzles to do in my spare time and to share with my students. I came across these new Japanese "area" puzzles awhile ago and purchased a gook at my local bookstore. I really enjoy doing these puzzles but they are hard to find. I was excited to find this second volume of the book I originally purchased. I think these books are the only real source of these puzzles in the United States. I have used them with my high school math students as a warmup and they enjoyed them as well.

I love the selection of area puzzles in this book as well as the first one. Good also for kids Grade 5 and older, maybe younger for smarter kids.

I have a gaggle of 11 year olds who will tell you that they love these mazes. They start of easy enough that even students who struggle with multiplication can work through them, but they get hard enough that no students can consistently solve the level 5 problems.I also enjoy them in my free time!

Great way to pass the time, a great workout for the brain.
