I was a bit hesitant about this book, although I enjoyed Stephen Platt's prior work on the late Taiping rebellion. That was primarily a military history, while this is not. The Opium Wars have been viewed from a variety of political angles for over a century, and I was concerned what another interpretation might yield. This turned out not to be a problem. It is a fresh look, unburdened by ideological baggage, but still it offers mainly a one sided picture of the period. It is unclear if many Chinese primary sources were used in the research. From the notes much of the material seems to be from English sources. Ironically perhaps, one focus of the book is on the Britons who began to translate from Chinese in the late 18th century. I am assured that the author reads Chinese, and it's certain his intent was to concentrate on the role of the British. At very least you can consider this is a good view from the western side of the divide. The result is a fairly standard but well crafted account of British merchant, missionary and military meddling in Qing China. It covers events from before Macartney's ill fated embassy and refusal to kowtow to the emperor (1793), through Palmerston's assault on the ports and the Treaty of Nanking (1842). The familiarity of these themes does not detract from their retelling. A major strength is the detailed analysis of British proponents and opponents to the opium trade and war.Qing dynasty responses to British diplomatic initiatives and naval incursions, as well as Chinese drug smuggling and addiction are also reviewed. Dramatis personae include the requisite emperors, corrupt officials, Cantonese merchants and Confucian reformers. The key players are sketched out, but are not developed to the extent that the foreign community is. The main focus of the work lies in the lives of the men who came from across the seas to seek their fortunes. The author pursues and at times overtakes the writing techniques of his former mentor and professor at Yale, Jonathan Spence. Character vignettes enliven the historical events, and a narrative flair animates the proceedings. Turns of phrase are clever without feeling contrived. In certain ways this book complements Julia Lovell's recent account, which included the Second Opium War, Elgin's looting and arson of the Summer Palace, and the long term political aftermath.

Imperial Twilight is a historical account of British trade in China from the late 18th century to early 19th century and the dynamics that eventually led to armed conflict. It gives a history of the era via a focus on particular individuals in politics, trade and religious outreach that formed the early foundations of diplomacy and cultural understanding. The book is entertaining and informative and gives the reader a sense of the instincts and perspectives of the time and the cultural and commercial frictions that eventually led to the Opium War.The book is split into three parts, in the first part the author starts with the story of James Flint, one of the first English merchants to immerse himself in Canton, and the first diplomatic mission the Empire of China. The author describes the exchange of goods between the British envoy and the Emperor's emissaries and the items included by the British to impress the Chinese with their modernity. Needless to say the first diplomatic mission to China was a failure, from matters of etiquette, to lack of interest in gifts presents that led to obstinacy for changes of trade protocols to favor the English, which was the goal of the diplomatic mission. The author moves on to describe Canton in the early 19th century, how trade was organized around monopoly power of the East India Company, the role of Chinese officials in regulating business as well as how corruption existed. The author discusses the institutional decay in the Qing dynasty with Qianlong and the rampant corruption towards the end of his reign with mass theft by the officials. The author describes the journey of Thomas Manning, the first Englishman to meet the Dalia Lama and see Tibet. The author combines history with travel log and gives a lot of background to the first real sinologists from England, including Barrow and Staunton among others. The second part of the book focuses on when the opium volumes grew substantially and depletion of silver became a larger concern. The author gives the history of the Tai Pans as well with a focus on Jardine & Matheson. The author also spends time discussing the dynamics of the opium trade including where it was grown, how it was shipped, how it was practically regulated in China and how that changed over time as the emperor took an increasingly hard line. The author also spends time discussing the ambitions of Great Britain and the pinnacle trade was put on as a national ambition and as a consequence some of the politics involved from the English side. In the third part of the book the author describes the political change occurring in England that led to the desire for greater competition and with it, the dissolving of the monopoly rights of the East India Company. The author describes the power vacuum that partially was created and the lack of coordinated diplomatic mediums to bridge the gap that was created. The author gives the story of George Elliot who was sent over as a national representative to both control British citizenry but also help represent British rights. The author details the sequence of events and complete overreactions on the part of the English that eventually led to armed conflict. It portrays the events as more misunderstanding and errors than vicious imperialism. The record in parliament does show that to be somewhat true. The author also puts blame on the foreign secretary for aspects of the militarism that took over and eventually became all that is remembered. The book focuses largely on events prior to the Opium War with a focus on the British in Canton. The author also spends time discussing the Chinese system at the time, the decay of control by the emperor and the corruption in the system. If one wants a history of events leading up to the Opium War from 1790-1840 with a focus on the dynamics between Great Britain and China, this is very readable and entertaining. It doesn't focus on the unequal treaty and events from the middle of the 19th century onwards. but its highly readable for those interested in events prior to the unequal treaties.

A truly impressive history that scholars and the general public alike can enjoy and learn from. Platt's new research adds many layers of understanding to our knowledge of this important period in East-West relations. And his strong focus on the individuals who helped bring about and participated in the Opium War -- with their flaws, complexity, virtues and beliefs -- reaffirms the notion that we are all agents in the making of history, not just victims of social trends and economic forces. As a historian myself (though of Europe, not China), what I admire most about this book is the beautiful writing style -- both clear and precise, conversational yet elegant, and generously peppered with irony and humor (qualities that are essential to the serious study of history, I believe). History is a discipline that tends to produce good writers, but Platt is exceptional in this regard. He is proof that the writing of history, when well done, accurately reflects the gripping human drama that makes up our common past.

With writing that is as beautiful, vivid, original and unusual as the movie itself, this is a perfect companion piece. The novel follows all of the major plot points of the screenplay, with a few twists and dialogue changes to keep it fresh, and additional background on even peripheral characters, adding much depth. The book begins with an intense depiction of Strickland's 18 month ordeal trekking through the Amazon to find amphibian man, or as the natives call him Deus Branquia. (Gill God). This is an important set-up because it explains why Strickland is a bullying, cowardly antagonist, and he is thusly far less one-dimensional than he came across in the movie.Inside the thoughts and motivations of Elisa's resolute maneuverings to win the affections of Gill God, and the kaleidoscope of physical reactions he has in response make their love story all the more credible and undeniable. There are sadly just a few pages of Gill God's thoughts, which are delightful, and I wanted so much more of them. He refers to himself as "we," refers to indoor light as " many fake suns,“and Giles drawings of him are his “twins” The intricacies of his physique, his movements and how he expresses his emotions through his body read like poetry, and there are endless descriptions. You know that he can think and more importantly feel like a human, although he clearly is not human. Its undeniable that he’s a magnificent one-of-a-kind creature, He understands what he is, and he is many things all in one. It is most poignant that he ultimately describes himself, as confusing as it is at first, it makes perfect sense, because therein lies the larger truth of what the movie couldn't fully capture. Still there was just not enough of him and way to much of Strickland. But I feel the exact same way about the movie. For some reason del Toro chooses to not fully share the most compelling element of the story, which is not the mystery of him - it's HIM.Elisa's final fate is vague from Giles perspective as the movie ends, left with his optimism and beautiful quotation. The book, however, closes with Elisa thoughts, then Gill God's narrative, who absolutely knows what happens to his beloved in the “ever after.” He may have always known. It's fated and beautiful closure to this timeless fairy tale.

This is the story in print for the movie The Shape of Water. Books go so much deeper into the characters' lives and personalities than is served by what you see on the movie screen, and this book is no exception. Beyond the slime of what lies beneath our thin veneer of humanness, we find ourselves searching for the same things the characters of the book are seeking: a life worth living, a love that lasts forever, and affirmation that we are all connected in some way--that we are not alone. The beauty finds her beast in this story and dares to love him for who and what he is. It is a fairy tale that will make you laugh, cry, and cringe as you accompany Elisa and The Asset as they seek their happily ever after.

It's true that the writing could have been 'fleshed out' a bit more. I think I was looking for more details of how Elisa and the Asset fall in love - a more drawn-out beauty and the beast tale. But all those feelings got tossed aside when I came to the last few pages and learned the Asset's real name, and read his thoughts, and learned more about Elisa's identity (if you open up your imagination). It reminded me of the ending in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. I can't tell you how many times I re-read those last few pages, stunned by the discovery...and then flipped to the beginning to read the passage when Elisa is awaking from her dream of being submerged in water, which she's apparently had many times before. Wonderful, wonderful book. Beautiful story. I have the DVD, but without the movie being able to tell what the last few pages of the book reveal, I will always like the book better than the movie.

I loved the movie and when I saw there was a book out with the same title, I had to read it as books always have more detail than a movie. The one disappointment with this book is that the main focus seems to be on Strickland, the one person I didn't care to read about as he is a cruel, different kind of crazy. He brought the Amazon back with him along with the creature as he mentally breaks down as the story progresses (like his rotting fingers). Elisa is a 33 year old mute orphan that exists in the shadows ecking out a living just existing. The more I read about her, the more I find out just how special she is with the reason for her muteness and throat "scars" which I didn't fully understand from the movie. Putting it all together from reading the book was an "aha" moment for me. The highlights of the book was her interaction with the creature and a brief glimpse of what the creature is thinking wishing there was more of that. The ending was more complete, not just wondering what is going to happen to Elisa and the creature. All in all this is a good companion piece to enhance the movie.

This is definitely the best book I’ve ever read period! I am crying tears of joy for how it ends. The author is a genius. What an incredible love story, surrounded by hate, anger, poverty, insanity, and the strength of deep friendships, compassion and heroism!!I read this book on my kindle, but I want to also buy a hard copy to keep in my library and treasure forever!!

I really enjoyed the film, and I honestly believe this novel is even better. It is not one of those novelizations that was clearly written after the film's release word-for-word from the script; it makes a genuine effort to build on the story. Many scenes are significantly changed and practically all of the characters (especially Strickland, Hoffstetler, and Elaine) get some excellent development. I must emphasize: this book does not feel like the novelization of a movie, it feels like an adaptation of an excellent story. The writing is very nicely done, though it does occasionally lean into purple-prose territory. I found myself wishing it was longer! If you enjoyed the film, this book is a solid investment.

Not too thrilled that there is two word searches per page and they are tiny......

The publisher of this book has put TWO PUZZLES on the SAME PAGE, completely negating the idea of BIG. My father, age 93, who loves word find puzzles, was excited to find this BIG sub-category of wordfind puzzles. He particularly appreciated the lay-flat binder. But when he opened the book and found two small puzzles per page, he tossed it aside and pronounced it "not what I want". if the publisher disclosed this variation from the standard one-page, one-puzzle format, I would happily give it 3 stars for being a crappily laid-out book that I didnt' research carefully enough. But I see no evidence of this oversight in the product description. I hope my one-star rating yanks it down enough to keep others from falling prey to the same trick.

What a disappointment. I bought 7 Parragon Word Search books several years ago for my 91 year old mom. She really loved the spiral bound books. They were easy to hold and the puzzles were challenging. We were excited to see the new 2015 Spiral bound Big Book of Wordsearch. Well here's what she said: "More is not always better. The old format was better. Each puzzle needs more words to make it challenging. The book is too heavy for old arthritic hands."So there you have it.We are keeping it because it will cost too much to return and she said it is better than nothing.

This is a great book. However I was under the assumption that the letters were bigger. The person I bought it for usually uses big print puzzles, so if you are looking for big print, do not get this one. If you are ok with smaller print - than I would highly recommend it. The book is sturdy and it does offer a lot of puzzles. It may have been my fault that I didn't realize that the letters were small.

The actual puzzles are really small, there are two puzzles per page and they only have about 10 words each. There are 500 puzzles, so it's a fairly thick book. The puzzles are super easy and they are a bit too small to really get into. I would have preferred half the puzzles and have them be a lot bigger with 20 or more words to find. The spiral binding is really nice for flipping between pages.

Missing several pages of puzzles. No. 159-162,167-170,175-178,183-186. Pages we're there but it was blank.

Like others have said it’s a lot of smaller puzzles. I was thinking it would be bigger puzzles. Should have read the reviews.

This is pretty good word search book. It doest have long list of words to find. Its small, simple qmword search every page. It helps me stay focus not to get bored if it has too many words per puzzle to find.
