With writing that is as beautiful, vivid, original and unusual as the movie itself, this is a perfect companion piece. The novel follows all of the major plot points of the screenplay, with a few twists and dialogue changes to keep it fresh, and additional background on even peripheral characters, adding much depth. The book begins with an intense depiction of Strickland's 18 month ordeal trekking through the Amazon to find amphibian man, or as the natives call him Deus Branquia. (Gill God). This is an important set-up because it explains why Strickland is a bullying, cowardly antagonist, and he is thusly far less one-dimensional than he came across in the movie.Inside the thoughts and motivations of Elisa's resolute maneuverings to win the affections of Gill God, and the kaleidoscope of physical reactions he has in response make their love story all the more credible and undeniable. There are sadly just a few pages of Gill God's thoughts, which are delightful, and I wanted so much more of them. He refers to himself as "we," refers to indoor light as " many fake suns,“and Giles drawings of him are his “twins” The intricacies of his physique, his movements and how he expresses his emotions through his body read like poetry, and there are endless descriptions. You know that he can think and more importantly feel like a human, although he clearly is not human. Its undeniable that he’s a magnificent one-of-a-kind creature, He understands what he is, and he is many things all in one. It is most poignant that he ultimately describes himself, as confusing as it is at first, it makes perfect sense, because therein lies the larger truth of what the movie couldn't fully capture. Still there was just not enough of him and way to much of Strickland. But I feel the exact same way about the movie. For some reason del Toro chooses to not fully share the most compelling element of the story, which is not the mystery of him - it's HIM.Elisa's final fate is vague from Giles perspective as the movie ends, left with his optimism and beautiful quotation. The book, however, closes with Elisa thoughts, then Gill God's narrative, who absolutely knows what happens to his beloved in the “ever after.” He may have always known. It's fated and beautiful closure to this timeless fairy tale.

This is the story in print for the movie The Shape of Water. Books go so much deeper into the characters' lives and personalities than is served by what you see on the movie screen, and this book is no exception. Beyond the slime of what lies beneath our thin veneer of humanness, we find ourselves searching for the same things the characters of the book are seeking: a life worth living, a love that lasts forever, and affirmation that we are all connected in some way--that we are not alone. The beauty finds her beast in this story and dares to love him for who and what he is. It is a fairy tale that will make you laugh, cry, and cringe as you accompany Elisa and The Asset as they seek their happily ever after.

It's true that the writing could have been 'fleshed out' a bit more. I think I was looking for more details of how Elisa and the Asset fall in love - a more drawn-out beauty and the beast tale. But all those feelings got tossed aside when I came to the last few pages and learned the Asset's real name, and read his thoughts, and learned more about Elisa's identity (if you open up your imagination). It reminded me of the ending in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. I can't tell you how many times I re-read those last few pages, stunned by the discovery...and then flipped to the beginning to read the passage when Elisa is awaking from her dream of being submerged in water, which she's apparently had many times before. Wonderful, wonderful book. Beautiful story. I have the DVD, but without the movie being able to tell what the last few pages of the book reveal, I will always like the book better than the movie.

I loved the movie and when I saw there was a book out with the same title, I had to read it as books always have more detail than a movie. The one disappointment with this book is that the main focus seems to be on Strickland, the one person I didn't care to read about as he is a cruel, different kind of crazy. He brought the Amazon back with him along with the creature as he mentally breaks down as the story progresses (like his rotting fingers). Elisa is a 33 year old mute orphan that exists in the shadows ecking out a living just existing. The more I read about her, the more I find out just how special she is with the reason for her muteness and throat "scars" which I didn't fully understand from the movie. Putting it all together from reading the book was an "aha" moment for me. The highlights of the book was her interaction with the creature and a brief glimpse of what the creature is thinking wishing there was more of that. The ending was more complete, not just wondering what is going to happen to Elisa and the creature. All in all this is a good companion piece to enhance the movie.

This is definitely the best book I’ve ever read period! I am crying tears of joy for how it ends. The author is a genius. What an incredible love story, surrounded by hate, anger, poverty, insanity, and the strength of deep friendships, compassion and heroism!!I read this book on my kindle, but I want to also buy a hard copy to keep in my library and treasure forever!!

I really enjoyed the film, and I honestly believe this novel is even better. It is not one of those novelizations that was clearly written after the film's release word-for-word from the script; it makes a genuine effort to build on the story. Many scenes are significantly changed and practically all of the characters (especially Strickland, Hoffstetler, and Elaine) get some excellent development. I must emphasize: this book does not feel like the novelization of a movie, it feels like an adaptation of an excellent story. The writing is very nicely done, though it does occasionally lean into purple-prose territory. I found myself wishing it was longer! If you enjoyed the film, this book is a solid investment.
