Review

"Deeply personal, sorrowful and ultimately triumphal, They Called Me Number One is an important addition to the literature on residential schools, and Canada's reckoning with its colonial past."- Winnipeg Free Press "Her memoir provides invaluable insight into the enduring effects of a tragic and shameful part of our collective past, and also helps to begin the process of healing."  - Danna Hansen, Quill & Quire"Much of what has been written about the residential schools system, however, is so densely academic or historical that many readers simply tune it out. But Bev Sellars' memoir, They Called Me Number One, is neither, which is what makes it so accessible."- Tyrone Burke, Canadian Geographic

Bev Sellars' “They Called Me Number One” is not my first literate foray into the horror that was the Canadian Indian/American Indian/First Nation experience of 'residential schools'; still it was insightful and provided me with a much better understanding of why there is so much social, emotional and psychological destruction that takes place within many of their communities/reservations.Ms. Sellars tells the heart wrenching, joyful and intimate story of both her life and that of those closest to her. She gives details about how the Canadian government from the late 1800s straight through today have used laws to undermine indigenous culture via many routes, but focuses heavily on the 'boarding school' experience which was meant to 'civilize' the indigenous peoples of the Americas (and take their land) by forcefully removing them from their parents at tender ages, force them to stop speaking their native language, forbid them to dress in their native clothes, forbid them to eat their native foods, forbid them to practice their native religion and abusing them sadistically (physical beatings, sexual abuse, verbal and mental abuse and death) if they couldn't 'adapt' or 'keep up'. Sadly, but predictably, these institutions were headed by Christian churches throughout the Americas and sanctioned by the Canadian and American governments.Per Bev Sellars, though there has been progress, there is still a very long way to go for the indigenous peoples of Canada. It's long past time for the Canadian (and American) government to step up, take responsibility for their past crimes against humanity and do everything in their power (and then some) to right past wrongs. Much can be done – only lack of will stands in the way.An excellent book that every Canadian regardless of hue or race should read.

Chief Sellars spends the first half of this book describing the horrors visited upon her and 3 generations of her people and family by the Indian residential system. The second describes the struggle she went through to overcome the trauma and grow into a leader of and passionate spokeswoman for her people. I can only imagine the relived pain this book cost Chief Sellars, but I thank her for bearing it.Part of the book's power is the clear, lucid but passionate language in which the story is told. Others have told the big picture story of history's largest genocide, but Chief Sellars puts a face and place to it. A must read.

"They Called Me Number One" by Bev Sellars is far more than a story of the residential school experience. It is the story of a courageous child and woman who survived by clinging to the pieces of her life that were kind and good. Her wonderful Gran who taught her compassion and even a few caring words from a dormitory supervisor. She held to these large and small pieces of flotsam in order to maintain the courage to survive the beatings and ridicule that were the daily bread of the unholy alliance between the Catholic Church and the Canadian government.Sellars does not spare the people and the system that abused her, and generations of her family, but she also remembers those who threw a life ring. For all survivors she has written a self-help book equal to any that she reports reading in her adult years. When people ask, "What do the First Nations of Canada want?" give them this book. I know that I will.

An eye opening book for me. I wanted to undestand more about the residential schools and got a much wider picture of what happened to the First Nations people not many years ago... I also understand that it will take a few generations to overcome the horrific history. And I still cannot understand how all this happened in modern times!

It was an eye opening experience. I realized in North America our own indigenous peoples were wronged in so many ways. We turned our back on the injustices toward those who are the original people who were the first to live here In truth we are the invaders who robbed them of everything that was "them"' As a white woman, I feel all persons should read informative narrative.

Got this for my husband for a Christmas gift. He read the book and said was very eye opening and sad as to how the Indian Children were treated.

Hardtop put the book down!

Excellent recap of life on the majority of the Indian Reserves in Canada..

Estrogen: The Natural Way: Over 250 Easy and Delicious Recipes for Menopause, by Nina Shandler

Amazon.com Review

Estrogen: The Natural Way is a cookbook with a difference: every recipe is high in plant estrogens, which can relieve menopausal discomforts such as hot flashes, sweats, and sleep disturbance. Plant estrogens may protect against heart disease and osteoporosis--without the increased risk of breast cancer. In fact, they may protect against cancer, say author Nina Shandler and her endorsing team of physicians. Shandler tells her story of menopausal distress ("I felt like a middle-aged bed wetter") and her reactions to hormone replacement therapy (nausea, headache, rage against males). Her quest for other solutions led her to plant estrogens. She offers rich information in a simple, accessible style; she's like an educated friend reporting back after library trips and personal revelations. The winners among estrogen-rich foods are soy and flaxseed. Shandler uses soy to create creamy foods that taste decadent despite their low calorie count. She adds ground flaxseeds to recipes for a crunchy texture. The 250 recipes in Estrogen: The Natural Way are a tasty array of breakfasts, breads, soups, snack bars, salads, pastas, entrees, and desserts, most of which are quick and easy to prepare. Menopausal women seeking the benefits of estrogen without drugs will find this book a practical and pleasant solution. --Joan Price

From the Inside Flap

Women need estrogen, but estrogen levels diminish with age. In the short term, estrogen's departure leaves most women in a frequently overheated, uncomfortable state. In the long term, its exodus places their hearts, bones, and brains in harm's way. And conventional hormone replacement therapy, with its potentially distressing side effects and increased risk of breast cancer, doesn't provide a reassuring rescue. Faced with every menopausal woman's frightening estrogen dilemma, Nina Shandler discovered exciting news: Some foods contain estrogen. She headed straight for the kitchen and created this easy-to-swallow alternative. Part eating program, part cookbook, Estrogen: The Nat-ural Way shows women how to make fast, fun food using nature's estrogenic ingredients. From breakfast bars to soups, from main courses to desserts, Estrogen: The Natural Way provides a gentle yet effective version of estrogen replacement therapy.

During the last year, at 45, I've been experiencing what I suppose could be described as "intense PMS" 7-10 days before my period, making me a tired, bloated, sugar craving, spaced out, emotional freakazoid. Bizzare emotions and strange symptoms like incredibly painful and swollen breasts, waking frequently during the night, insatiable sugar cravings and feelings of insecurity were plaguing me just at this time-every other time of the month I was fine. After torturing my boyfriend for 8 months and experiencing the symptoms worsening, I realized I had to get a handle on this. I can't afford, nor do I believe its necessary to use, expensive holistic doctors and their over priced supplements when the internet is filled with tons of research and data for those who will take the time to do their homework.Searching for natural treatments for perimenopause, I found Nina's book. It sounded just too good to be true: eat soy and flax daily and your suffering is over. As a vegan already, her mouth watering recipes that could actually make me feel normal again sounded like paradise. As of this writing, I have been using the guidelines that Nina talks about in this book for the past 3 weeks, making sure to get 2-3 servings of flax seed and/or soy daily. This is right about the time I turn into my scary hormonally deprived alter ego and I have to say I feel GREAT! The first sign that this is working is that while my breasts are swelling some, they are not painful at all!! Halleluiah! That made me feel like I was three months pregnant. Also, I the general feeling of spaceiness and sugar cravings are gone. In fact, I feel, well, normal.I urge every woman who is plagued by psycho hormonal shifts to read this book and implement the diet asap. It really, truly works. I never would've believed something so simple could work so powerfully.Forget the overpriced physicians and their overpriced potions and pills! Take on your diet, and in addition to balancing your hormones, you will be protecting yourself against heart disease, osteoporosis and even breast cancer. (your man will benefit too from prostate cancer protection and will experience protection from heart disease as well) You will be amazed at how much better you feel!

I can't wait to try these recipes !!! I am excited !!!

great book

I have been using this cookbook for over 5 years. It's great! Most of the recipes are easy. The nice thing about it is that it incorporates tofu into receipes that are familiarto you and your family: soups, crepes, smoothies, main dishes, cheesecake, puddings, etc. You don't have to buy odd ingredients that you would need to prepare tofu in a Japanese or Chinese style. It stimulated me to think of my own ways to add tofu and soy products to my diet. And the estrogenic ingredients really worked to get rid of my hot flashes. My only problem with it is the flax seed deserts. Some of them haven't turned our at all.

I was very enthusiastic regarding this book. The recipes were very well done and I did find great relief from menopausal symptoms. However, while traveling I relied on several "portable" flax seed foods for my daily "portions" for estrogen. Shortly thereafter, I was found to have a very irregular heart beat. I have no history of heart problems and, in fact, am an athlete. Research into flax seed showed that more than 2 ounces or 60 grams a day should not be taken internally. It can cause increased respitory rate, gasping, staggering, or convulsions. In early history, it was used as a heart medication - indicating a heart link. There is no warning in the book and in fact, the book encourages higher doses. Please use extreme caution in using these flax seed foods. Use only small amounts per day. There are beneficial amounts (very low doses), but it is toxic in small amounts as well if consumed regularly. There are no warnings on the flax seed bags in stores.

This book is well worth buying. The information is very valuable to any women who wants to experience an important natural transitional stage of life in a very healthy supportive way. I found the recipes to be very tasty. There is something I would caution you about the recipes though, in Chinese medicine peri-menopausal and menopausal women are considered to have an excessive yang or heat condition (known as hot flashes). I would recommend limiting the use of garlic or leaving garlic out (which creates excessive heat in the body). As an alternative you can substitute horse radish (which is cooling to the body) if you need to add a tangy flavor to the recipe. This book came to my attention when I had a delicious dinner at my friends's house and she credited the recipes from this book. She knew I was looking for recipes that created a healthy diet for peri-menopausal women. This book answered a lot of questions for me and has started me on a healthy diet.

I have had my nose in cookbooks for over 20 years, and this is by far the best. Why? Because its recipes are simple, simple, simple, and geared to those of us who won't spend hours in the kitchen, no matter how many hot flashes we have. The shakes made from tofu and soy milk are fabulous, as are the granola recipes. She's a little heavy handed with her spices, so just exercise caution. BUY THIS BOOK, no matter what your age or sex, if you are interested in quick, healthy, and tasty eating. And she also has a great attitude!

I read your review with interest. I had not tried the recipes in the book. I wanted to. What REALLY turned me off was that EVERYTHING is loaded with sugar and sweeteners. ANYTHING will be palatable if you sweeten it. The recipes are just so bad with all the added sweeteners. At one point the author mentions her husband and daughter love the stuff she made. No wonder. It's like candy!I can't believe the author actually eats like this. Forget menopause. What about the damage from all that sugar?

The audio is fast but it is very useful. While working I don't get a lot of time to glue myself to a book. A lot of the time it's listening and absorbing. Listen again and behold, I can keep up with the narrator and anticipate a few answers.

This is a decent book for self-learning (I got this out from my university library, so no 'verified purchaser' label).Positives: Explanations of grammar and vocabulary are easy to understand. The units are very intensive but that just means breaking them up into smaller lessons for oneself.Diagrams on how to write Khmer characters are also helpful.Negatives: Another reviewer (Colloquial Cambodian: The Complete Course for Beginners (New Edition) (Colloquial Series)) has pointed out a very extensive list of typographical errors; in working through the units I have found that even this list is incomplete. One particularly egregious example is the female speaker for exercise 5 in unit 1 reading out only 9 consonants instead of the listed 10 - needless to say, extremely confusing for the beginning Khmer learner when the audio stops matching the text. There is a sense that the book has been rushed out and not adequately copy-edited.The transliteration system I gather is improved from the first edition but is still inconsistent and unclear. I'm not sure why authors writing Khmer learning books are so reluctant to just use IPA transliteration but it would make learning pronunciation a lot easier, especially for the difficult vowel sounds that English speakers have trouble differentiating. The interruption of an English speaker translating each sentence during the example dialogues is poor practice from a pedagogical point of view - it's hard to switch out of L1 and listen in L2 if someone keeps offering English translations. Much better to have the audio in one Khmer-only chunk then break it down afterwards.Overall this is probably the best resource available for Khmer self-study, but there is still room for a definitive work.

This is the shorter, more brief of two books that Michael Heiser has authored on the subject of the spirit realm. This is more of an introductory book on the subject. The reader will find some intriguing information in the book such as some curious geographic areas that pop up in both Testaments. He also offers a perspective on the aftermath of the Tower of Babel incident that I hadn't heard of before.I appreciate his discussion on translational differences regarding Deut. 32: 8,9.This is a good primer on the supernatural world based on Scripture. If you want a more detailed book check out http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1577995562?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

We know of the Bible as the story of God's plan of salvation for mankind. From the first page to the last, we see that he had the end in mind from the very beginning. However, most of the time we see just two parties to the story: the Triune God and mankind, those inhabitants of the third heaven and the first. However, there is another group that plays the role, the divine council. Part of the group referenced in Ephesians 6:12 which refers to the unseen realm ruled by principalities, two of which are named in a brief reference in Daniel 9. There are a few explicit references to these beings in the Bible along with many references that are implicit.Without understanding that yes, there is an actual unseen realm and a variety of beings who inhabit it and that some of the words spoken in the Bible are judgments against them, we can completely miss the context of what certain passages are saying.Dr. Michael Heiser has made an extensive study of the Divine Council. An expert in ancient Near East languages, he has collected over 4,800 references related to it. This 168 page book is a synthesis of those resources and gives an overview of the structure and dynamics of the conflict from Genesis to Revelation. The book reminds me of "Mere Christianity." But while Lewis began at square one beginning with a defense that there must be a God and then follows with arguments as to why the Christian God rings true in every area, this book is written for a Christian audience.Heiser assumes that the reader believes in God and that Christ is the Redeemer of mankind; however, be prepared to check every other assumption you have regarding the make-up of the heavens at the door.I'll admit, when I first came across his blog, drmsh.com, and read about the Divine Council, it was uncomfortable. It didn't fit with what I had been taught in Sunday School, Bible study or church. But having that information, when I read through the Bible, there were passages that opened up to me. There was significance where before it had been just words. The book begins with the question, "Do you really believe what the Bible says?" The chapter continues point out that while as Christians we profess to believe in a God, Creator, and Redeemer who is outside of space and time, very often we act like confirmed skeptics when it comes to supernatural accounts in the Bible. We skip over the parts that are hard, make us uncomfortable, or don't fit within the worldview we've created. What it covers• The make-up of the heavenly government of God, the heads of which were 70 heavenly beings/principalities which were assigned people groups at the dispersion at the Tower of Babel as told in Deuteronomy 32:8. There is a whole other layer to the salvation plan and it was this group, this council, that Jesus is made Lord of all, the name above all other names (Philippians 2:9.) This is the government that he is Lord of, which he won through victory at the cross. (Isaiah 9:6)• It explains who the Bible is referring to when the world "Elohim" is used.• It answers questions about those weird verses referring to the Nephilim and the Watchers• It explains our purpose as God's "imagers."• It talks about free will, God's will, destiny, and our purpose.• It gives a fuller picture of what is truly going on, the "battleground in two realms." (pg 42)• It explains how the celestial interacts with the terrestrial (Chapter 5: Cosmic Geography)• It explains the purpose of the Law (Chapter 7: Rules of Engagement.) I think when we as Christians read the Old Testament, we get hung up on all the sacrifices and completely miss that the way to salvation has always, from first to last, been through faith in the Redeemer, God's Salvation, Yeshua. (Genesis 15:6, Job 19:25)• It also explains the truly demonically inspired effort to eradicate both the Jewish people and the nation of Israel (pg 75.)• It explains what sacred ground means and the purpose of all those animals sacrificed. (Chapter 8: Sacred Space.)• It ties in seemingly unrelated conflicts in the Bible and illustrates how they are part of the same battle (Chapter 9: Holy War)• It gives a reason for the bits and pieces of the plan and picture of the Messiah in the Old Testament and explains why the message was so cryptic (Chapter 10: Hidden in Plain Sight)• It gives a different perspective than most on the confrontation between Jesus and Satan and what Jesus was really doing in sending out the 12 and then the 70. (Chapter 11: Supernatural Intent)• It explains the Second Temple understanding of some of the names of God and descriptors and explains why Caiaphas had such a violent reaction when Jesus said, "You will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven (Chapter 12: The Cloud Rider.)• It explains the meaning of Pentecost where the Holy Spirit gave not just gifts, but was equipping for war (Chapter 13: The Great Reversal.)• It explains who we are as believers (Chapter 14: Not of this World)• It explains our position in God's family (Chapter 15: Partakers of the Divine Nature)• It explains what is to come (Chapter 16: Ruling over angels.)I grew up in the church and even went to a private Christian school for a number of years. I thought I knew the stories and understood it. Then I started reading through the Bible for myself . . . and I realized how much I didn't know and how much I had been taught really didn't line up with what the Bible said. Then when you start learning the details of what was going on at the time the words were written and the context in which the writers wrote and read it in that light, most of the time you have to readjust your understanding of it.=== Who Should Read This Book ==If you or someone you know is struggling with how it all fits, this is a good book to read. For a new believer, it's a good framework for beginning to fill in the pieces. Certain things will make more sense when they read the Bible. I'm guessing the more "churched" someone is and the more "doctrines" they are versed in, the more resistance they will have to the information presented in the book.If you or someone you know is into "spiritual warfare" as some present it as "warring" against territorial spirits and "taking territory." Read this book. Then read Needless Casualties of War by John Paul Jackson. And then go and read Daniel chapter 9 and pay attention to WHAT HE WAS DOING when the angel that came to Daniel and Michael were battling the Prince of Persia. All we are supposed to be doing is 2 Chronicles 7:14 and James 4:7 . . . that's it.If you or someone you know is a Christian but is caught up in UFO religions or Reptilian bloodline conspiracy theories . . . Bless your heart . . . and read this book.If you or someone you know has been following teachings that use Psalm 82:6 which states "Ye are gods; you are children of the Most High;" applying it to humans and then use it as a springboard to all sorts of weird, almost heretical doctrines. Read this book. That verse has been misused by a lot of people in a lot of different ways. For example, Bill Johnson and Kenneth Hagin and their understanding of kenosis and what actually happened in Christ's death and Resurrection. Rabbinic commentary has used it as justification for making Israel the Savior and suffering servant rather than trusting in God alone as Savior. And in reading Three Treatises on the Divine Images (St. Vladimir's Seminary Press Popular Patristics Series) recently, I discovered that that misinterpretation was the cornerstone of John of Damascus's defense of icons and justification of venerating saints as gods.== My Big Takeaway ==In discussion on another review, someone asked me if I really learned anything new. Let me tell you, yes I did!As I've read through the Bible, particularly the Psalms, the continual reference to Og of Bashan and the bulls of Bashan always made me wonder,"What does that mean?"I knew there was significance to it, but I could not figure out what it was. I would enter different search phrases trying to find articles that discussed it. Nothing. Then I was reading through this book and lo and behold, Chapter 9: Holy War, page 92. It explains exactly why Bashan was significant."In ancient literature outside the Bible, Bashan was known as 'the place of the serpent.' Two of its major cities, Ashtaroth and Edrei, both mentioned in connection with this journey (Deut 1:4; Josh 13:12), were considered gateways to the underworld realm of the dead. In the context of Israel's supernatural worldview, God had led the Israelites to the gates of hell."Any time David mentions Og of Bashan in the Psalms, he is saying the exact same thing Jesus said in Matthew 16:18"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."== Criticisms ==ON SOURCES:One of the other comments criticized the book for its lack of references. This is a valid criticism. This book, as it states in the introduction, is a greatly condensed version of The Unseen Realm, which is the much longer and heavily cited academic version. I do agree sources would have been good. I'm not sure why they decided to leave them out.My guess is that when you are taking information from such a huge amount of sources (I mentioned above his library on the Divine Council contains over 4,800 sources) and then process and condense it down to such a small book, a lot of this is synthesized information which would probably be hard to cite one source specifically.SHARED INFORMATION BETWEEN THE GODHEAD:In Chapter 3, page 28, Heiser makes the claim that the "us" in Genesis 1:26 is not a conversation between the persons of the Trinity but to other members of the divine council. The reasoning is this:"God announces his intention to a group. Who's he talking to? His heavenly host—his council. He's not talking to the other members of the Trinity, because God can't know something they don't! And here the group he's addressing learns what God has decided to do."Could he have been talking to the divine council with this statement? Yes, it's possible. However, it is not proof of it. It could also be another example of a conversation between the Godhead. Such as for example, Psalm 110:1 which states:"The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet."This is very obviously a conversation between the Father and the Son.And yes, God can know something the others don't. Jesus himself said it was so in Matthew 24:36 and Mark 13:32 when he said that only the Father knows the day and the hour of his return."“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only."ON DEMONIC FOCUSThere were a few little things here and there where I didn't necessarily agree with his interpretation on some Scriptures, but they mainly had to do with layers of Scripture. The one thing that did bother me was in the very beginning of the book (pg 19,) he made sort of a dismissive statement saying that demons had more important things to do than to bother with us. Quote:"And while the Bible describes demonic possession in rightfully awful ways, intelligent evil has more sinister things to do than to make sock puppets out of people. And on top of that, angel and demons are minor players."I do not agree. I do not think it is something to dismiss or take lightly. For a book that stresses the reality of the supernatural, unseen realm, it seemed like a very odd statement to make. It encourages people to broaden their view of the forces at work, but then pushes it to the theoretical, like it has nothing to do with us personally or our day to day lives.First, this is not Scriptural. Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10.) Yes, coming . . . to us.Peter reinforces this in 1 Peter 5:8 when he says, "Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."Who is he talking to? Believers. He is telling US to watch out, that this is something WE will be dealing with. And then in Ephesians 6:10-12:"10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places."I didn't understand the reality of this until a few years ago when I volunteered in a prayer ministry. Someone came for prayer for severe head and neck pain, which she had been suffering from for 16 months. She had been to numerous doctors and none of them could do anything for her. When she came, she said she had gotten to the point where she told God, "Either take me or heal me" because she couldn't bear the extreme, continuous pain any more. She was almost to the point of suicide. The first time she came, she had a little bit of relief, so she came back again. The second time, the people praying with her recognized there was some demonic activity going on and were praying against it. Her pain shot through the roof. They asked her what was going on. She said, "I can see a black faced demon clawing at me trying to get me."That shattered anything I thought I knew about interaction between the demonic and Christians. When your theology becomes reality, sometimes it's a little freaky. It is a very real thing. If you would like to read a more vivid illustration, I recommend Spirit of the Rainforest: A Yanomamo Shaman's Story.A note on this review: I preordered this book when it first became available to do so in March 2015. The publication date was later pushed back to December 2015; however, my preorder was still fulfilled by the publisher by mistake in July. This is why you will see a couple of reviews way before the release date.

I like the book but I would recommend buying The Unseen Realm by Dr. Heiser instead. The Supernatural is a condensed version of The Unseen Realm and there was nothing in this book that wasn't in The Unseen Realm. I have long been interested in the mindsets of the ancient Hebrew people and early Christians when it came to bible interpretation. I believe if we can find how the earliest readers of the Bible interpreted the scriptures we will have a closer relationship with our Creator.

Excellent book for any real Christian seeking the truth about the supernatural. Most evangelical's these days have little to nothing to say about the supernatural world the Bible reveals all the while proclaiming a supernatural virgin birth, a supernatural resurrection from the dead and a supernatural ascension to heaven.

This is one of the better books I've read in the last 10 years.I don't know that anything in it is startlingly new. However, he brings subtle evidence in Scripture together in rather clear and emphatic ways that make Biblical sense.Certainly his discussion of the fallen angel critters . . . and the "other gods" of the former Heavenly court, to me, is clearly Biblical. We have just not tended to face what the Bible says about such characters.I like, also, his emphasis that as we realize more clearly WHO WE ARE as GOD IMAGERS--living object lessons into God's character--it can and should make our lives more fittingly dedicated to His service and walking in His Spirit.I heartily encourage folks to give this book a read. I think their spiritual walk can be enhanced by it.Blessings,
