Dr. M.J. Lohnstein is the assistant curator of the Netherlands' colonial museum at Bronbeek.Adam Hook studied graphic design, and began his work as an illustrator in 1983. This is a very good although short book (40 pages of text plus eight pages of color renderings) describing the Dutch colonial army that attempted to repel the Japanese invading army in 1941 / 1942. The army was amazingly weak, although that shouldn’t come as a surprise to readers, I suppose. It was somewhat impressive in numbers (more than 110 000 total) but weak in weaponry. It had around 140 artillery pieces, the largest comprising 75 mm howitzers. It had another 269 81 mm mortars and fewer than 900 machine guns. The Japanese 16th Army defeated this force with only three divisions plus an independent regiment totaling around 60 000 troops. A Japanese division may not have had the firepower of a US Marine division but it could certainly deal with a Dutch colonial army.It’s interesting to read some of the euphemisms in the book. The Dutch colonial army was mostly intended for “internal security operations.” In plain English, that meant keeping the natives from rebelling against their Dutch colonial overlords. It should come as no surprise, then, that many of the native troops didn’t hesitate to desert when confronted with the invading Japanese army.A minor criticism is that the one and only map of the East Indies area is on pages 34 – 35. So a reader has to go through the first 30-odd pages without really knowing where the referenced islands, cities, and ports are unless you either already know the East Indies / Indonesian geography or if you happen to leaf through the book first and discover the map.Only about six pages of the book describe the Dutch defensive plans and the Japanese invading plans.The bibliography indicates that most of the source material for the book is primary Dutch material.Some other books that offer good accounts of this and related subjects are as follows:• “The Dutch Naval Air Force Against Japan – the Defense of the Netherlands East Indies, 1941 – 1942” by Womack (2006). This book offers an excellent and detailed story of the collapse of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) in December 1941 – March 1942 from the viewpoint of the Dutch naval air force. It includes summaries of the main naval battles and Japanese army landings as they pertain to the overall allied defeat at the hands of the Japanese. It also offers an excellent discussion of the strategic plans and operational attacks of the Japanese as they advanced toward southern Sumatra and western Java though the South China Sea via the Karimata Strait and toward eastern Java via the Makassar Strait east of Borneo and the Java Sea. It was an extremely well-planned operation and was superbly executed. Chapter 9 describes the chaos and disintegration that occurred on Java at Soerabaja (Surabaya), Batavia, and Tjiltjap as the Dutch resistance collapsed. It was at least as bad, if not worse, than what happened with the British at Singapore.• “In the Highest Degree Tragic – The Sacrifice of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet in the East Indies During World War II” by Kehn (2017). This book describes in the most detail I have found the losses of the US Asiatic Fleet as well as the British and Dutch fleet losses.• "Rising Sun, Falling Skies" by Cox (2014). This book includes maps depicting the ship tracks of some of the sea battles;• "The Massacre of ABDACOM" by Ready (2013). This is a somewhat dry, but thorough, account of the same subject as "In the Highest Degree Tragic." It offers no maps and no ship tracks of the sea battles."Darwin 1942 --The Japanese Attack on Australia" by Alford (2017). It provide the most comprehensive account I have found on the Darwin attack of February 1942;• "Fortress Rabaul -- The Battle for the Southwest Pacific January 1942 - April 1943" by Gamble (2010);• "Malaya and Singapore 1941 - 42 The Fall of Britain's Empire in the East" by Dennis (2016). There are plenty of books on the collapse of the British in Malaya and Singapore but this one offers a lot of information packed into 90 pages. It doesn't pull any punches on British political and military leadership and command incompetence, either.

In this Osprey Man-At-Arms #521, "Royal Netherlands East Indies Army 1936-1942", a blank space in allied capabilities on the eve of WWII in the Pacific has been filled in. Author Marc Lohnstein gives us a view of the Dutch military and how they prepared for the coming conflict.The NEI army was originally created for internal security, and the author gives detailed information of Dutch efforts to create an integrated force from the many ethnic/religious groups within the Dutch East Indies - now Indonesia. The book details the numbers and types of units as well as how they expanded over time to meet new threats. Obviously, command and commanders came from the Netherlands, but there were a number of interesting things peculiar to NEI.The author concisely gives the reader an idea of the numbers of troops, units, types, etc. and how they changed the closer they were to WWII. The Dutch were trying to adapt and increase their defenses but simply ran out of resources and time - especially after Holland was conquered by Germany in 1940.We get a good idea of the uniforms, the weapons and equipment including attempts to mechanize with mobile forces and armored units, buying tanks and armored cars from abroad as well as constructing APCs from locally-sourced platforms. With the exception of the air where the Dutch had only obsolete weapons, they were certainly at least as well equipped as the Japanese in terms of weaponry from light machine guns to artillery to tanks.Where they were lacking, according to Australian observers, was experienced commanders and training. Against the experienced, well-led Japanese units, they were no match.This is a good look at how a military tries to prepare for a looming threat - sometimes well with attempts at innovation, sometimes poorly in the things that really matter. This is a good book that fills in a blank in our understanding of the situation on the eve of the Japanese rampage across the Pacific. Five stars.

The KNIL potentially fielded a significant number of troops, but they were indifferently armed, lightly trained, and responsible for securing a massive archipelago. A modernization program was only just underway when the Japanese arrived...This Osprey Men-at-Arms Series book concisely describes the KNIL, notably including its combat support and combat service support elements. The narrative covers a lot of ground in a brief space. This reviewer would have liked a map of the Dutch East Indies up front, and perhaps some assessment of how well the Dutch-Indonesian integrated units performed in combat. As another reviewer has pointed out, this book does fill a missing space in Osprey coverage of the Pacific portion of the Second World War. Recommended.

Typical Osprey excellent packing a lot of information into a few pages. Nice drawings also. I knew nothing at all about the Dutch East Indies army and now I do. Thanks Osprey.

If you're on the fence on this one, buy anything from this author. I'm not sure it inspired my rooms yet but the writing is like eating honeyed toast, it is full of content, and it makes you feel good to read it. Love it. Thinking of buying a physical copy.

I liked the way the author had the reader take stock of their room, their lifestyle and what they how they wanted to live in each of their rooms instead of telling the reader here is a living room and here is how you should decorate it. The author gave simple, sensible and in most cases inexpensive advice on making the rooms in house reflect your style and personality. Thanks to this book my home will be more personable and less "trendy" and I won't break my budget decorating it. Best of all I'll enjoy living in them and sharing them with friends and family.

First of all this is a BEAUTIFUL book to browse through - the photographs are outstanding and beyond inviting. Go deeper and Melissa does not disappoint. Better than her blog, Melissa inspires and guides you to create a thoughtful personal home.I would certainly recommend this book to beginning homemakers. As well as more seasoned homeowners looking to refresh their home or tweak it by looking at each room with fresh eyes and embellishing what you have using Missa's fantabulous tips. SERIOUSLY helpful book. After reading just one chapter I transformed my entryway (which doesn't really exist, but now I realize it does, thanks to Melissa!) into a beautifully warm and welcoming space. I recommend this to anyone who wants functional, beautiful help but doesn't know where to start or have much experience with it!

Love this book. The designer does not tell you how you have to design your home or give you rules of decorating. She focuses on helping you find your style and inspiration to decorate the house you live in and love it. What I like best about her style is that it's not overly fussy but it actually looks like a beautiful, practical, and breathable home. If it's not your design style, you can simply get inspiration to find what you love. It's really easy to read and feel engaged. The cover itself is beautiful and can be used as decor as well.

Melissa Michaels is inspiring. Someone suggested her first book to me when I had just moved into "new built" house & I was longing for the home I had lived in for 35 yrs. It really helped me see I could transform my new house into a home that was me. (I'm still working on it). I am a 67 yr. old grandmother who followed the fly lady years ago. Much of what Melissa writes about is not new to me but I sure needed to be reminded that the soul of my home resides within me.

So delighted I bought this book. Melissa has a special way of making decorating ----- for which I have NO talent!--- a joy! It's a simple and enjoyable approach that no one has ever taught me. I've had several decorators come to my house, and although they were very good, they talked me out of things that I wanted because it wasn't 'how it's usually done'. Melissa works within the basic design elements, but elaborates on how you can modify anything to fit your taste. I love how she emphasizes how your home should be your sanctuary. Your safe and peaceful place. And that the journey to getting that place is part of the joy!.

I purchased this book for primary teachers for use in their classrooms, and not necessarily for teaching about dinosaurs. It seemed to be equally as suited to an examination of the nature of science and how scientists "operate". Every page holds opportunities to describe how scientific ideas change as new information is gathered, and to stress that being "wrong" is a normal part of scientific discovery. Teachers can also ask students to point out the evidence that scientists used to modify early theories about dinosaurs. It can be emphasized that although the author uses the term "guess" several times, coming to conclusions based on observations is not guessing, and that modifying ideas after gathering additional data is acceptable and desirable.

All my kids and grandkids have loved telling time with Thomas. The last grandkid needed one and so happy I could find it. He loves it.

My son enjoys this book and the fact it tells time. It was suppose to be in like new condition but came a little ripped on one of the pages and bit dirty but the owner refunded me and let me keep the book which was nice of him.

I'd always heard Phillip K. Dick mentioned in the pantheon of sci-fi writers like Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke and Le Guin. But even though these authors are some of my favorites, I'd never read anything by Mr. Dick. So I decided it was time. When I researched his works, I found that Ubik is considered one of his best and that Time magazine had named it one of the 100 all-time novels (written during Time's publication years 1923-2005).Starting out, I wondered why. While the plot and world building were intriguing, I found the writing a bit clunky (lots of adjectives and made-up words) and the attempt at future technology dated. (not surprising--it was written in 1969 and takes place in 1992). The style reminded me of a sci-fi version of a Phillip Marlowe detective story--a bit cliché even though it may have been the prototype for the cliché.But as the book progressed, the mood took hold of me, an unsettling feeling like the kind you get in those seconds between dreaming and awakening, when you struggle to figure out which is which. By the end, I knew I'd been treated to a great book, a complex, well-crafted and intertwined story of multiple realities, none of which is ever grounded enough to let you sort through them. But there's something more: these realities make you question your sense of life, like The Matrix without the machines, a floating reality that is the state of being itself.The ideas rather than the characters are central to this story. Most of the characters are pretty flat. But once you get used to the world (psychic powers, colony on the moon, dead people in half-life), the mood takes over, as what appears to be reality fluctuates and changes.It's a slow start, but as I stuck with it, I found it well worthwhile, an original work with a deeply unsettling feel. Think Kafka plus Twilight Zone in the Matrix.Down-to-earth folks whose world view is grounded in what they perceive to be reality should probably avoid this book. But despite some rough edges, I found it to be a great read.

This was my first book that I read by PKD. It did not disappoint. I'm really into sci fi so I'm not sure how I messed his works in the past but plan on reading more in the future.I think its pretty hard to go into allot of detailed without giving it away. It deals allot with psychics etc and a process of death where people who are basically dead are put in chambers in which they have brain function and are in a dream like state. So pretty sci fi. lolI don't think its too crazy. I guess I was a bit worried that his books would be so far out there that it would be hard to grasp. I didn't find this book to be this way. He explains everything to understand it in due time. Well maybe not everything. lolIt is a book to make you think and question existence etc. Pretty interesting all around. I plan on reading more of his works.

Aa a near-charter member of PKD's "cult following," I never thought I'd give UBIK, which I always considered one of his late masterpieces, anything less that 5 stars. The problem is that the original version, which I read soon after it came out in 1969, has been extensively revised--I hope by Dick himself. The result is a more elaborate and probably a structurally superior novel, with more characters and an additional major plot line. UBIK was one of Dick's novels that the critics at the time saluted as a work of "genius" which, however, was "flawed." Also, the revised version may be seen to be closer to Dick's central theme, that we all create our own worlds and no one knows what's really going on until near the end of the story, if then. However, the more rational plot development loses some of the intensity and plain terror of the more focused treatment given the original antagonist, and therefore the immense relief I remember feeling when his power is finally blunted. It's as though some of Dick's critics rewrote his book. Still, it's a good read; and I don't doubt that the added aspects, particularly the new plot line based on "deconstruction" theory, are pure PKD.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ubik although I don't think it will necessarily leave a lasting impression; however, some of the ideas, like being able to prolong the death of a loved one for many years, and also being able to communicate with them, definitely inspired some deep thinking.The world created, the characters, and the general plot seemed well thought out. It did, however, seem like the intention of the book was to keep the twists constant, which can sometimes lead to a disorganized feeling.And the end... I think I had just been too spoiled by big plot twists that by the time I actually got around to reading this book, it was only natural for me to guess (accurately) how the book would end. Nonetheless, it's the meat in the middle that makes it worth it.I liked Ubik, but I doubt it will be among the Phillip K Dick books that I will go back and re-read.

I’m somewhere near the middle of Dick’s Exegesis and I decided to try reading something a little lighter, so I chose Ubik. Whoops! Dick manages to turn one of his recurrent existential themes into a bizarre story. Bizarre in the details of the characters and the setting in the mode of a Dr. Who tv show meets the old Batman series. Bizarre in the theme, like Kafka’s Metamorphosis envelops Lovecraft’s New England. The plot sets two competing corporations against each other; one is full of psychic talent and the other, anti-talents. So far, so good. Very good in fact. Then, the explosion happens and everything becomes more and more weird. Just when you think sense is totally beyond your grasp, Dick ties it all together with a reasonable explanation. The art of the story is truly amazing once you look at if from outside. I found the experience of being inside the story, however, disturbing. Very disturbing!

I have several different translations of several of Nietzsche's books, and Kaufmann's is still the best overall. I've quoted below from the product descriptions of this book and The Portable Nietzsche. I would recommend the Basic writings of Nietzsche to both those familiar with his writing and those just starting to become aware of them. I found it to be pleasant format though one would hope for a larger font size but that would have only added to the length of the book.

Nietzsche isn't really as gloomy as you might expect someone with his nihilistic reputation to be. He's actually (from what I've read in this work) quite exuberant, all about tearing down the norm and rebuilding it in a new and wondrous form; creativity for its own sake. That being said, in order to get across his ideas, he launches attacks on pretty much every system of beliefs you can imagine, including language itself. Excellent reading if you want to think about thinking, but it will probably make you uncomfortable at one point or another.

This is a book to stay on my book shelf for years. I like The books that were contained in here. I like genealogy of Morals , Beyond good and evil and The birth of the tragedy the best. They say that Nietzsche is one of the few philosophers people read for pleasure and i find that true. A good read enough said!

Great collection of the important works which help introduce the reader to Nietzsche. I recommend pairing this with the Viking portable collection. Kaufmann's a great translation with useful/snarky footnotes. It's a beautiful edition and dust jacket as well, if that contributes to your buying decision. The page layout is handy for notetaking if you write in your books or (if like me) you appreciate easy to read layout of print.A great and affordable buy!

Nietzsche was the greatest polemist ever. He played the role of Saint-Michael, the dragon slayer, in his Homeric battle with the existing dragons (the Christian moralists). He tried to revalue all generally accepted `good and evil' values and really felt that mankind was pregnant with a new super-species, the `Ãœbermensch'.His influence on philosophy, literature, psychology and politics is immense.Of course, some aspects of his vision on mankind are unacceptable.The all important influence on his Nietzsche's life and philosophy came from Schopenhauer: `I very earnestly denied my `will to life' at the time when I first read Schopenhauer.'The life of a Nietzschean immoralistLife is to express one's will to and lust for power. The cardinal instinct of man is not self-preservation, but the discharge of strength. Everything evil, terrible, tyrannical in man, everything that is kin to beasts of prey and serpents serves the enhancement of the species `man'. This enhancement has always been the work of an aristocratic society. The noble man creates his own morality, his good and bad, with egoism and exploitation as his real nature. He despises the slaves, the unfree, the doglike people who allow themselves to be maltreated.Christian morals, democracyWhen the aristocratic value judgments declined, the plebeians imposed their own morality of unegoism, pity, self-sacrifice, self-abnegation and ascetic ideals on mankind. The egoistic `good' of the masters became the `evil' of the Christian faith.This faith constitutes not less than a sacrifice of all freedom, enslavement and self-mutilation. Very nice printing and edition of Nietzsche's works--well enjoy reading this version from Modern Library.

It's Nietzsche, with a great translation. What's not to love?
