This is a ~2500 year old book on history that was criticized right after it came out. It's often viewed as the less serious, less academic, inferior work when compared to Thucydides - the author who provided the template for future historians. For that reason, a modern reader may hesitate to look at it. They should not. It is a wonderful read - the stories are great, the sociological descriptions are wonderful, the deductive analysis (when placed into context) is remarkable. The book's engagement with real world events must be considered, and there are excellent footnotes to discuss it. Ultimately, this is the best and often only source for many of his subjects. As such it is well worth reading and engaging with. Afterwards you will probably spot many, many references to this book through the centuries. The Histories is critical to our modern day understanding of the classical world. I do think that reading it with a map of the ancient world would be helpful if you're not familiar with the landscape, but other than that, just go along with it.

I needed to purchase an ancient world geography book to go with this... but now it's a pleasure reading The Histories which many times are more folk tale - even tall tale - than actual, bonafide history. But often, that's all he had to go on... the stories the Persians were telling themselves... what people who had traveled in Egypt saw, etc. Great quality on the binding, pages, etc.

How is it that I have never read this classic. And the notes included with this version were extremely helpful. Herodtus has a great way of telling stories and I like how he jumps from topic to topic while explaining history. I felt like I was at my grandpa's feet hearing about the good old days with some lessons on life thrown in. I should have read this years ago!!!

Any "period" piece will be a difficult read (at least, for me) but to understand history I believe you have to be willing to read the material that was written at the time. All of this has to be done with an understanding that the writers were not, on average, objective and the material had to be written with, at least, an eye on the power brokers who might read the material. Still, necessity does not imply easy.

I thought that reading Herodotus would be daunting, but Mr. Waterfield's translation so far is making it fun to read. The prose is very accessible, which makes this history very intriguing and enjoyable to read. In a nut shell Herodotus writes about the causes of the ancient war between the Greek world and the Persian empire.

Excellent translation -- makes a prodigious work accessible in modern English. Herodotus provides the historical context for much of classical epics & plays, so it is interesting & illuminating. A very useful companion piece -- like the Oxford Companion to Classical Literature.

This is not an easy read, but if you have the patience to make it through the introduction and initial chapters, you will find a fascinating tale. Herodotus is a gifted story teller. Even in his digressions- and there are many throughout the book- the descriptions of the lands, the people, the battles, customs, offer rich detail and insight to what it was like to be living 2500 years ago during the Greek and Persian wars. Oftentimes reading this book, it reminded me of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and made me wonder if George Lucas and J.R.R. Tolkien were inspired by Herodotus' The Histories." In so many ways we have changed, but in also so many ways, we still share much in common with our ancient ancestors.

"The Essentials of Respiratory Care" book is one heck of a book! I have used it for many years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Now, I am entering my 3rd year of medical school- I still use this book VERY OFTEN as a reference! The outline format is very convenient and very thorough. My only complaint is that the authors have not seen fit to publish a NEW edition! To my knowledge, the most recent edition is 1990. :-(

This is my absolute favorite respiratory book, and I have them ALL. It's laid out in outline format, which makes it easy to quickly find the pertinent information without all the textbook fluff.

This textbook has put me through my two years of respiratory therapy classes. I found it in the library and have been using it ever since to study with. It is to the point and well written. I like it so much that I plan on buying it for clinical year. I am hoping that the author decides to publish a newer edition soon though. This book covers everything you will EVER be tested on. Definetly, good to have!

Another remarkerable book in the Stone Society Series! Faith put her heart into this book and it shows through her characters Urijah and Banyan.Banyan was sent to be raised by his uncle when he was a small kid and that is where he meet Urijah. They had grow up with each, learn to fight and even with through their changes. As they got older Banyans feelings towards Urijah started to change and their friendship took a drastic turn! A turn in which Banyan wanted more but Urijah refused to accept that it wasn't anything more than expermerting with each other.Soon their lives took them to different pathways and years would keep them from each other. However, when Urijah did finally realize his feelings towards Banyan were more then just friends too many years had passed and he had given up any hope of being with him. Urijah finally found love and married. When Banyan finally found Urijah he didn't know and his anger lead him to do the unthinkable and Urijah has refused to have anything to do with him for over thirty years.But once again they are throw together to fight a war and Banyan is more determined to finally at least try and become friends with Urijah again cause after everything that has happened in their past he has missed his best friend.Although, Urijah can't fight his attraction to his former best friend and even the love he has always felt towards him he just can't forgive for what happened, but the longer he is near him the harder it becomes. His best Julian is the only one the knows the full story of what happened.Another loss of a former love during the battle strains Urijah and Banyans relationship even more and Banyan decides that he will never forgive him and leaves. After a long talk with a close friend Urijah does finally sees where he was wrong and sees Banyans actions in a different light and finally admits to himself that he loves him and needs to find Banyan and confess his feelings.Will Banyans love for Urijah be strong enough to give them another try or has he finally closed that door forever in order to protect his heart?

Uri's book has been a long awaited story and it was well worth it. Throughout the Stone Society series, the author has teased us with bits and pieces of Uri and his life, and finally we get to know him and, as with the other Goyles, fall in love with him.The relationship with Uri and Banyan has been contentious at best, but the full story behind their past drama was never known. Now, I can understand the reason for the distance, and boy is it a doozie! As the backstory unfolds, I found my heart breaking for Uri and Banyan alike. They are two males that have loved each other from childhood. Banyan came to accept that his feelings of love for Uri were more than friendship and it was natural for him. Uri on the other hand, tried to run from his feelings. The thing is... you can't hide from the mate bond, no matter how hard you try.When things heat up in the war with the Greeks, Uri and Banyan find themselves on the battlefield together using their great skills to defeat the enemy. It's on that same battlefield that my emotions went on a whirlwind ride. I cheered and cried and mourned with them. I even cursed the author. This, my friends, this is the sign of a great story. One that carries you into the pages and makes you a part of the action.This book had everything for me, a great backstory, action, adventure and yes, steamy romance. Uriah, the book, much like it's leading man, is the total package. The only thing left now is to wait for the next book in the series.I wholeheartedly rate this book 5 shining stars!

Great series! I highly recommend this entire series of books. Well written and edited, deep and interesting storylines, rich-complex characters and enough love and passion to fill it out and bring it together! I’m a Southern girl myself and really looked forward to reading Julia Reed’s new book, however, sadly I found it to be full of name dropping snobbery and “misadventures” of alcohol fueled self glorifying reminiscence. If you aren’t in the inside crowd you won’t get it- so, evidently I’m not part of her crowd. If you want to read a book about growing up in the South I highly recommend Reese. Witherspoon’s “Whiskey in a Tea Cup”, she’s such a Lady and her stories of growing up near her grandparents in Nashville were so touching that I cried many times.

Not what I expected. Poor writing.

Both hailing from the South, Julia and I are kindred spirits. So her stories in this wonderful book bring back a lot of memories for me personally, as many of the (real) characters are similar to ones I have known growing up in Georgia. There is a certain quirkiness to the South and Julia knows just how to capture it. It’s not just the characters though, Julia provides a number of wonderful recipes useful for entertaining, which we are quite adept at down here.

Shipped fast. Julia Reed is good at writing entertaining stories about the deep south. I am buying all of her books.

South Towards Home is another very enjoyable book by Julia Reed. I've read and loved about 5 of her books, all are very worthwhile reading.

Petty Theft is the story of a recently dumped cartoonist that sees a woman shoplifting his book. It's written vividly and drawn loosely, without panels, in an endearingly sketch-like style. It's my first time reading a book by Pascal Girard, and I hope to read many more.On a side note, in my copy it looks like the printer skipped or something. It's not smudged, but there is a lighter, double image on some pages.The book's still readable though.

This was an okay book. Quick read, but it didn't really grip me at all. I would have rather borrowed this from a friend or the library.

In Petty Theft, Pascal Girard is on his own after a long-term relationship ended. He’s running as part of his new life healthy resolutions, but when he trips over a rock and injures himself, he’s told to stop exercising for a while. Without the endorphins, he’s afraid he’ll descend into depression, so he begins hanging out at the local bookstore, where he spots a young woman stealing one of his books.It’s obvious from the art that Girard (a French-Canadian) has more than the usual American art influences. The art is thin-line, with six borderless panels per page, and the content is slice-of-life and urban, a comic equivalent of Woody Allen movies. Perhaps it’s a bit too self-indulgent, assuming that we’re all interested in the details of Girard’s life, but the incidents are funny if cringe-inducing. I wanted to push Pascal to make choices, or better ones. His attempts at detection, at finding out who this woman is, often boil down to chance encounters.Certain pages work as gag strips in themselves, especially the work ones. Pascal is feeling blocked from drawing, so he goes back to work as a construction welder, which doesn’t go well. Particularly odd yet eye-catching is one of his possessions that the ex-girlfriend sends over: a giant paper-mache head of himself. Sitting in the corner of his room (he’s staying with friends, a young family who provide a contrast to his single, unfocused life), it’s a mute reminder of his self-judgment.Although small, the panels have great emotion. They read quickly, in case you’re just interested in what uncomfortable situation Pascal will get into next (much like Seinfeld), but their detail rewards inspection. His uncertainty about what to do — in his life, with his career, about the book thief — will resonate with many. I found the ending somewhat unsatisfying, as I felt there was a lack of resolution, but perhaps that’s my expectations of fiction, where I want stronger endings than we get in life. Petty Theft sees cartoonist Pascal Girard in a bad place. He’s nearing 30 and wants to run a marathon to mark the milestone – but during a run one day he smashes his foot against a rock and throws his back out! His girlfriend of 9 years breaks up with him leaving him temporarily homeless and living in the spare room of a married friend with a new baby. He’s also giving up cartooning and thinking of once more taking up a “real job” like construction.Without the endorphins he gets from running, Pascal falls into a depression and goes looking for books on positive thinking. But while browsing in a bookshop he sees a young woman stealing a book – one of his! – and decides to follow her. So begins an unusual courtship as Pascal tries to figure out what he wants in this light-hearted, comedic slice of life tale.Maybe it’s because he’s so merciless with his character, depicting himself as this human wreck, constantly prat-falling and saying the wrong thing, misinterpreting situations and so on, but I think Pascal is a very likeable and sympathetic chap. The book is also very much in the vein of modern French comics who do fast-moving, engaging contemporary stories superbly.There isn’t a whole lot to say about Petty Theft – it’s a straightforward story executed beautifully. Girard doesn’t bother to include scene transitions/establishing shots, trusting the reader to fill in the necessary blanks, and this allows for a swifter, and more subtly sophisticated, narrative.Girard keeps the disparate elements in his story turning nicely so there’s never a dull moment, and I was interested to see what would happen with the cute klepto and him – will they, won’t they, etc. I smiled a couple times during the book – and I read this straight through in a single sitting which is rare for me - and even genuinely laughed once!The comedy is at times a little strained – there are only so many times watching Pascal fall over can be amusing – and I thought the imagery of his ex’s giant paper mache head in the corner of his room symbolising his heartbreak was a bit obvious (as was the inevitable throwing away of said head to symbolise overcoming his sadness). But these are small nitpicks – overall the comic is great.The blurb on the cover calls this a “heavily fictionalised memoir” so I expect Girard moulded the facts into a neat, cohesive narrative for the sake of the reader, and that’s fine; whether knowing every part of it was true or not doesn’t really add or detract from my enjoyment of the story. Also, I wouldn’t say it’s a “romantic comedy”; comedy sure but romance? … Not really. Plus the label has negative connotations (at least, for most guys) – I know if I’d seen it advertised as such beforehand I would have hesitated picking it up!After this and his last book Reunion, not to mention his moving debut Nicolas, Pascal Girard is quickly turning into one of his generation’s most notable comics creators even if his work isn’t “important” from a literary or stylistic viewpoint. Petty Theft is a charming and entertaining book that will appeal to all fans of quality indie comics and anyone looking for a light, fun read.
