This book is a delight in every way. It is lavishly produced, and beautifully written. Its thoughtful, artful photography chronicles Hokule’a’s world-wide journey with one or more stunning images on nearly every page. It clearly articulates the most critical challenges of our time, and carries a message of authentic hope. The size, feel, weight, and even the magical endpapers all add to the luscious presentation of this important, timely and captivating book. The writer, Jennifer Allen, tells this modern day Odyssey with a masterful blend of scientific detail and pure poetry. She weaves interviews with the spirited crew members, the ancient wisdom and legends of Polynesia with stories from the ports that Hokule’a visits. Malama honua means “care for Mother Earth,” and in the midst of this great adventure story, we learn about inspiring projects as vast as American Samoa’s struggle to eliminate plastics, as ambitious as Cuba’s Agro-ecology program, as critical as the Giant Tortoise restoration in the Galapagos, as energizing as the Billion Oysters Project in New York. Plus, for lovers of language, Jennifer generously shares colorful words and phrases belonging to the Indigenous Peoples we meet. For example, Alingano Maisu, “the wind that blows the breadfruit out of the tree,” and the sacred pohaku.Photographer, John Bilderback, plunges us into vast sky and seascapes. He brings us, via haunting portraits, face to face with Indigenous Peoples in Aotearoa, Australia, Rapa Nui, and Tahiti. His shots of “Lava on the Big Island where Pele is reclaiming her land,” and the algae-greened ropes that lash the canoe together (six miles of rope), are works of art in their own right. His photo of Hokule’a nose to nose with a Norwegian Gem cruise ship in NY harbor with Manhattan skyscrapers in the background invites us to question where our human journey has landed us and what legacy we wish to leave our children. To understand the urgent message of this powerful book, here are the words of Nainoa Thompson, Pwo Navigator and President of the Polynesian Voyaging Society:“The voyage is about sailing on the core set of values we believe in. The sail plan of humanity is off course. But there is a movement of kindness and compassion that is happening around the world in response to the damage to our Earth. Hokule’a is a needle sewing a lei of flowers around the world as an act of peace… and that is why we sail.”A colleague and I intend to use this book in the university and elementary school, where we teach, to remind our students that there is a bigger, brighter horizon in front of them... more alluring than the world they squint at on small screens in the palms of their hands. They deserve to hear this epic story and imagine what it would be like to look up to the stars to guide them. This review doesn't scratch the surface of all this book offers. I haven't even mentioned Eddie Aikau. Or Billy Richards, or Gordon and Snake or the many young women and men Navigator Apprentices.A Bertolt Brecht line comes to mind: “In the dark times, will there also be singing? Yes, singing about the dark times.” Thank you, Hokule’a. Aloha, Star of Gladness !

I love this book. Words and images weave to tell the story of an amazing journey. My husband and I were recently visiting the Big Island, and the canoe was docked at our hotel in Hilo. School children would arrive each morning with offerings and song for the crew members gathered. It was wonderful to witness. Once home, I ordered this book to learn more. So glad I did. In what can be a crazy world, this warmed my heart and soul.

Shares the best of the Hawaiian Nation's ideals. A book to be read slowly and thoughtfully. A "coffee-table book" that has real substance within its covers.

Beautiful book

Excellent book

Amazing and fantastic!

awesome book!!!!

This beautiful book takes you on board Hokule‘a and makes you feel like you were part of the journey. The crew member stories are rich and reflect the values learned through voyaging, while the compelling images tell their own incredible stories. This would be an inspiring gift for anyone who carries the spirit and intention of malama honua and who practices caring for our Earth.
