I have been dealing with an eating disorder for almost 50 years. I've attended and belonged to a 12 step recovery group for the past 11 years. They helped me to some extent to acknowledge that I am a food addict and emotional eater/controller, however until reading Juilie Simon's new book, When Food Is Comfort, I did not fully understand the relationship between my childhood lack of nurturing and my inability to soothe myself from unpleasant emotions.I now have a multitude of skills to address these thoughts and feelings without the need to resort to food as my comfort and coping mechanism.My favorite chapter was "Pop the hood" as it gave me the opportunity to pause and check things out before resorting to my old dysfunctional behaviors.I highly recommend this book if you are serious about getting well mentally, physically and spiritually.

This book along with the author’s previous book, The Emotional Eater’s Repair Manuel, has made my life better. In thoughtful and empathetic plain language, it helps a person identify emotional overeating, reasons why he/she overeats, and most importantly what to do about it. This book helps me focus on asking myself a question before I eat: Do I feel hungry or am I eating to squelch an unpleasant emotional feeling? The reading shows me how to be my own inner therapist. A therapist who says things like: You do not seem to be really hungry but I see that you feel sad (see also: invisible, angry, unlovable.) That is a real and valid emotion. What can we really do which might make you feel better besides eating the Snickers bar that is trying to jump into your mouth? Perhaps you could pet the cat, walk the dog, repot a plant, listen to music, etc. (Sometimes my inner therapist includes a joke which works well for me.)I particularly like how this book did not look to blame me or any other person in my life. It points out that any caregiver in anyone’s life was dealing with their own struggles and may miss being as helpful to their charge as they could have been. It offers this same kindness to the person who struggles with overeating. No matter what care you received as a child, it may have not worked for you. But you can become a caregiver for yourself and be a great one because you know what you need most. The book details specific actions to take to do just that.I would recommend this book to anyone regardless of where you might be with emotional eating issues. It is a pleasure to read and has taken up residence on my bedside table. The kindness and caring that flow from this author are true and inspiring. We need more of that in the world.

I absolutely enjoyed reading Julie Simon's new book 'When Food is Comfort'. As someone who has struggled with disordered eating for a large part of my life I seek material that can help me to understand the disorder and how to properly manage it. I have found that Julie's way of describing one's relationship with food goes beyond "gluttony" or "greediness". The link between emotional eating and a person's inability to connect to oneself internally is a huge part of the problem. When Food is Comfort provides the reader with an in-depth look at where these issues stem and how creating nurturing connections can alleviate the feeling of "insanity" caused by this problem. I recommend reading this book because it has helped me and I believe it will also help you.

This book is a MUST for anyone who has struggled with emotional eating. When Food Is Comfort, builds upon the foundational tools and steps in her first book and delves in to the lack of nurturing and validation one experiences as a child as the impetus of a child’s stunted emotional develop and inability to self-nurture gives rise to the dependence on food for emotional comfort. While the damage has been done, Julie shares her techniques for an emotional eater to heal from the wounds and traumas, using personal examples and a gentle non-shaming tone.One of my favorite parts of When Food Is Comfort is how validating the message is to those suffering from emotional eating. Not built upon some fad diet or quick fix, Simon sets out and explores the complexities behind emotional eating. She has set out a very straightforward skills process for regulating behaviors and setting limits so that anyone suffering from emotional eating can begin to practice the self- reflective skills (and in turn assist in the physical change of the self-regulatory circuits in the brain) and can begin to heal from their core wounds as well as their emotional eating. I am so glad this resource is available for all of those suffering in silence and I am proud to keep it next to my bed and use it as I overcome my own struggles.Moreover, Julie doesn’t ‘blame’ a child’s caregiver or parent for failing to meet their child’s early developmental needs and empowers the struggling emotional eater to reclaim their power and heal themselves without food.I am glad this book and Julie's insight and techniques are available to those suffering from emotional eating, an "eating disorder" that is not well understood, and provides those struggling with the shame and isolation of emotional eating an empowering way to begin to heal themselves.

This book goes deeper than any I've read on understanding and dealing with emotional eating. Julie Simon takes us through every minute step of her process with clients and gives us the right questions to ask ourselves to get to the root of our need to eat for comfort. Every other book I've read on emotional eating makes a point of telling us to understand our feelings, but this book focuses on that aspect instead of making it just one step in the process.
