This is a light overview of the history of fractals, illustrated throughout with B&W line art figures. The strength is in connecting concepts at a high level; the reader will want to look elsewhere to drill down on particular points of interest.I saw this book at the library and decided I wanted to own it. Since the library book and this one were both paperbacks, I was confident I knew what I was buying. Alas, this edition is a miniature version of the original paperback edition! The font size is perhaps 5 or 6 points large. I nearly laughed when I held it up to the screen on its Amazon page -- the book itself is barely twice the size of the "thumbnail" of the cover shown on Amazon!Good book, but save your eyes and buy a used copy of the previous edition that was printed in normal, human proportions. Maybe the Kindle edition is readable? As the picture shows, the text is about the size of the text on a coin.
Introducing Fractals - A Graphic Guide is quite well done. To truly understand fractals, however, takes quite a bit of mathematical background. The authors do an excellent job of trying to ease the reader into the required math, but the average reader without much higher math background likely will not really understand some of the material. I have an extensive background in math (though not exercised much in the last 20 years), and I still felt a tad frustrated that I was not sure I really "got it" for some of the concepts. Do I *really* understand what an attractor or repellor is? Or their significance? I think so - but do I?So if you want to understand the basic ideas behind fractals, and their significance, this is a decent intro. If you are looking for a quick, easy read, that won't require much thinking to get through, this might not be it. The nature of the material might make finding such a book a tall order.
Doesn't match the description... way over my ability to see the print also... not a true beginners book... I have been interested in fractals for over 25 years but wasn't able to glean useful Information....
This is an EXCELLENT introduction to fractals! My children even read it. I have given this book as a gift dozens of times. It should be required reading for everyone!
This is definitely a series I will go back to for introductions to other topics. The presentation was great. The graphics were well done. It really did feel like an introduction with ideas about all kinds of things to look at about fractals. I think it would be especially useful in a high school classroom library.

Probably not a good "Introduction" to Fractals if you don't have a strong math and geometry background. .
