I really like this guest book as it has very specific boxes to fill in responses by your guests. It eliminates paragraphs that go on and on left by guests that can be off the mark. It provides feedback in specific boxes about the accommodations, the surrounding, thing likes to do, etc.

extremely useful to understand the US food culture. full of relevant details, though sometimes a bit long. the update should be a bit more complete to take into account the evolution of the last 20 years

The author's take on this book was too Marxist for my taste. To paint the food industry as inherently bad and the counterculture as inherently good precludes an objective study of the food business.

After I finished this book I finally understood the word told to Benjamin Braddock from The Graduate: "Plastics." I assumed the speaker was referring to some staid corporate job, but what I learned from this book is that the word "plastic" to the counterculture ear meant the inauthentic. Around the middle of twentieth century Americans were introduced to a whole different diet of foods. Its what we would call today processed foods but in the counterculture lexicon was dubbed plastic foods, e.g. Cheerios. The organic movement was suppose to be the antithesis of this industrial created food-like substance (to borrow a phrase from Michael Pollan's IN DEFENSE OF FOOD). It was grown on small farms and didn't use chemicals. It was suppose to be eaten in whole food form not processed, dessicated bits. The book is an eye opener on the origins of the organic movement, the consumer activism it spawned, and how corporations and their well-endowed marketing arms tried to steer consumers back to their products by mimicing organic foods, e.g. granola bars that are closer to candy than real granola. I highly recommend it.

The energy of the men in the photos seem to suggest that it was a collaboration and that to some degree all photography involves the objectification of the person being being photographed. I've read Tommy Tomlinson's columns and heard him speak, so I expected it to be an insightful, well-written book. I expected more than the weight-loss struggle promised by the cover. And there's a lot about what it means to be an over-sized man in our society and how it accommodates, or doesn't, to the growing percentage of our population who are very large. There's also a lot about Tomlinson's journey as a journalist and how his life decisions have been shaped by the limitations imposed by his size. It's a worthy read for anyone struggling with any form of addiction, either their own or with someone in their life.

I preordered this book after hearing the author on Joe Posnaski’s podcast because if Joe recommends something I’ll probably read/see/explore it - I’m a fan. I’m now a fan of Tommy Tomlinson. I read this book in 3 days and marveled at the honesty. It contains universal truths about why we don’t stop doing things that harm us. And in the end, I felt compassion - for him, for me, for all of us. Highly recommend this book.

Like this author I have spent my life struggling with my weight, and trying nearly every diet on the planet. Full disclosure, I am 64, and in the past year lost 35 pounds. This book made me laugh, cry, and really think about the reasons I am fat. Read the book, it is amazing.

A wonderfully objective, non-sentimental, emotional yet dispassionate discussion of circumstances contributing to excessive obesity, the consequences of that condition, the challenges in addressing it, and finally, the mental clarity required to ultimately get the better of it. An inspiring auto-biography penned with wit, intelligence, and editorial skill. That this is an easy, brisk read is not to diminish the impact of its insights and thoughtfulness.

I've read Tommy's work (please allow me the familiarity) since he began with The Charlotte Observer. He has always provided a turn of words that make a reader smile with contentment. I am a collector of quotes and he might be surprised at some of the entries gleaned from his writing. This book takes me back to the enjoyment of a good read, time spent relaxing and letting his words and ideas float over me. I'm so happy with his progress for the very selfish reason that I want to continue reading his work. It also really inspired me. In many ways, I've shared the same life, the food lies and the rat brain. And I too love that inner child, clinging to her desperately because she's been with me so long. But I feel stronger, like I can find the proper place for her to occupy in my life while I'm adulting, too. It's a great book and you'll walk away feeling stronger in a lot of ways whether your fight is with food or something else.

It poured rain all day yesterday, so...ironically, after my WW weigh-in, I read this book in one sitting. Everyone's journey is different, but the author, with honesty and humor, provides insight into causes of food addiction and the challenges of living as a morbidly obese person. I wish him continued success and years of happiness. I'm glad I invested the day in this book.

That took balls. Big, giant balls. I nodded through the entire thing. Can’t imagine the courage it took to write that, but I’m glad you did. God bless and good luck!

As an obese woman I related to much of this book but I still judged him for his "southern" diet. Now,apparently, the American diet. I was jealous -- if I ate what HE ate?? I'd be dead. And I never ate that badly- just too much --too many sweets, not enough calorie burn off. And then I hit menopause. Tommy, darling, you're lucky you're a man. Nobody warned me that when you hit "the pause" you also better cut back your calorie intake by at least a third. It's a horror novel called The Thickening. Around the waist. Anyway -- this book came close to describing the fears , rationalizations & excuses that drive fat people to overeat. Unless you are an addict -- you really can't know the whys. They'd make no sense. Same way I can sympathize with but really do not "get" an alcoholic. Just STOP. Hey, at least you don;t need booze to stay alive!! Try not eating for a week. Nope. Not the same. Food is an even trickier devil than drink n drugs, There is no getting away from it. And corporate America wants you to EAT. (they also want you to drink but, again, not quite the same) And food is served to...............children!! Food is LOVE. Tommy did get that point across & it's a universal truth. We should change it to Good food is love. But who wants that?? We want the sweets & the goodies. Love is SUGAR. Oh yeah. If you are not obese or an over eater, this book will give you a good idea what goes on behind closed doors for those of us who gaze longingly at food ads on TV & salivate when we drive past a bakery. We can't NOT think about food. And THAT is the thing that makes us crazy. There is very little, if any, relief from these cravings. It is too easy to get food. Heck just reading about Tommy's fav foods made ME want to go out & eat! I had to stop reading it late at night because it made me hungry!! Tommy knows what I mean. If you read this book and don't need to go out & get a snack................well.............don;t take this personally but I hate you. Because I wanted to eat something at just about every page of this book. And then I remembered..............oh yeah.............he is trying to lose weight..........think about that & avoid the refrigerator until the morning. Good book, funny & insightful. Also not edible which is a good thing.

Yesterday, I went to have the oil changed on our truck. Something I have done numerous times in the past. I knew how long I would have to wait...or thought I did. Over two hours later, my truck was still not done. Now I had a choice to make...get angry or practice doing life as Jesus would if He needed to change the oil in His truck. The first chapter of The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love came back to me, the scene of sitting in the airport with one delay after another.This book has gotten under my skin. It is an insight into Father God, the Good and the Beautiful God and why and how I would love Him.I recommend this book, just as my pastor/mentor recommended it to me.

Most of us struggle with unconscious narratives about God: do we really trust him, is he truly good and loving etc...smith delves into these important questions because as A.W. Tozier says, " the most important thing about a person is what they think about God. Their spiritual future can be determined by this." I found this to be true in my life. I have trouble trusting God because of my own father's alcoholism. Most of us struggle believing that God is good, loves us and we can trust him. This book will help you overcome that and truly fall in love with the God that Jesus loved, his "Abba Father." Most of us have false images of God that were given to us by parents, pastors, priests, or other teachers who have harmed us or taught us wrongly. Jesus wants us to love God the Father with all our heart, soul mind and strength because it is the only way to peace, joy, hope and life. The brilliance of this book is learning to see God through Jesus' eyes ( his narratives) in the Gospels.This book changed my life. I have a new love and appreciation for the Gospel that I never had before. Everyone in our small group was transformed and we also highly recommend the other books in the series.

This is such a wonderful book on challenging narratives we have about faith, grace and Christ. Used this book for a university student Bible Study, and the students LOVED it. Can't recommend this enough. The exercises are liberating, not cumbersome, and I think it helps long-term Christians think outside of the box of the trappings of "religion" and embrace relationship.

I really enjoyed studying this book with my community group. It gives practical things to do (sleeping in, silence, enjoying nature, lecto divina, creating magin) and then space to talk about how that worked (or didn't work) with our group. I also was able to lead a few times, and appreciated that it gives step-by-step suggestions for how to lead each chapter so that I didn't have to spend a lot of extra time planning that out. We got both of his other books in this series to try as well.

After teaching spiritual formation for twenty-five years in both university and parish settings, Smith wrote the Apprentice Series to share that material with a wider audience by creating a "curriculum for Christlikeness" (p.14). The curriculum was developed as a result of those formal teaching experiences, personal spiritual training, and interactions with Richard Foster, Henri Nouwen, Rich Mullins, Brennan Manning and Dallas Willard.The Good and Beautiful God seeks to "help people discover the God that Jesus revealed" by exploring many false but commonly held perceptions and comparing them to the "narrative of Jesus" (p.14). The book is written to be read over an extended period of time and ideally studied in a small group. To facilitate group discussion the book includes a Small Group Discussion Guide as an appendix (written by Matthew Johnson and Christopher Jason Fox) and an online Leader Guide (written by Matthew Johnson).The Good and Beautiful God is an orthodox and pragmatic introduction to a God who is good, trustworthy, generous, love, holy, self-sacrificing, and who transforms. For Christians who have been on the journey of faith for any length of time very little of the material in any chapter will be new, but all of the material has the ability to become more meaningful and transformational if the reader engages in "soul training" exercises that are found at the close of each chapter.

This is a must read for any Christian wanting to progress. It paints a picture of the God we need to know and points towards growing our relationship with Him. Christianity is all about relationship, not religion.

This book is a great way to show you the real perception of God through Jesus's eyes rather than the world perception of God that most of us have. This book is great for anyone at any point in their relationship with God. I will definitely be reading it again!

This book has been a great beginning for me. Getting the story right--and the right story--is essential to living life right (and the right life? Maybe I'm just trying to be clever there...) Anyway, this book has really refocused me on a disciplined life, a spiritual life, once again. Not new material for me, but a new presentation, and a compelling one. Thank you, Dr. Smith!

Full disclosure: this is just a one book amalgamation of the Spencerian Penmanship Copybooks. They've been put together all in one volume which is handy as the original copybooks were for school children in the mid to late 19th century. To be fair, it is good information though written in the very dry antique style of textbooks of that era. The paper quality is better than the copy books are if your going to use it as a workbook. It has all the pages to practice on but the binding should have been spiral, because as it is you can't lay it flat to work in. If you are interested in pointed-pen calligraphy and Spencerian script in particular, it is a handy reference volume to have. I agree with the other reviewer in that I don't really understand why it took so many delays to reprint the copybooks that are already available. If the price had not been lowered, I would have returned it. I really thought this was something new and someone had taken the time to update the text and information. If I were the publisher, I'd reprint with a spiral binder format that would at least make it more useful as a workbook. It's good for what it is as a reference book only. I had to laugh at the very sternly worded copyright information as this is a reprint of material that is most likely in the public domain.

I chose this book because another reviewer said this one had better paper than the Mott version.Pros:One bookNice paperMinor issues:It's a thick book so my hand catches on the bottom edge of the book during practice - I find that a little irritating.Practice for Capitals has been condensed with Words, so you get one column to practice the Capitals alone. (See picture)But I can find exemplars online to practice the Capitals separately.I would recommend this version since this is half the price of the Mott version. I also recommend getting a Pilot Penmanship (ergo grip) or a Pilot Desk pen (fountain pens with extra fine nibs) to go with this practice.

My two granddaughters, both Science major BS degreed, were not taught handwriting in grade of hgh school.I gave them this book and they both learned how to do handwriting. Printing is nice and computers printing is great, but good oldscribbles are useful.

Such a joy: I'm using this book to re-discover and re-train my fading skill of beautiful and legible handwriting. Doing the exercises is almost meditative. I'll buy a new, clean copy for my kids when they start writing too!

The best and most comprehensive course for a patient parent with a hard working child. Could be used a the only resource for teaching/learning handwriting for any age.
