I can't even tell you how much I love this cookbook!! Someone had recommended it a while back but when I flipped through it the store, I wasn't impressed. Honestly, no pictures hardly, I love pictures in a cookbook. Oh well, look past all that. This is a cookbook for people who want to know why a recipe works and why it may not. Every recipe is explained in detail and everything I have prepared has turned out beyond excellent. Especially the baking recipes! Explains room temperature butter vs cold vs 65 degrees and what each will yield in baking. the list goes on and on! This is for all nerd cooks!

The thing I love about Cook's Illustrated is that every recipe is tested fully in the test kitchen. You know how some cookbooks have some recipes that just don't work? Never the case with this magazine which spends test kitchen time comparing things like pie crust recipes so that they work out the best one and tell you why.Considering so many cookbooks now offer something like 30 recipes, this is an encyclopedia compared to many being released today. This has TWO THOUSAND RECIPES! But what's better is that, even though you have both familiar and unfamiliar recipes in the book (Creamy Herbed Spinach dip but also a few other versions you likely hadn't thought of like Cilantro-Lime Spinach Dip with Chipotle Chile), you also have the tips on how to cook things that you might not have learned. Even though I went to culinary school, I still learn things from this magazine (the cookbook is compiled from their top magazine recipes) sometimes and most home cooks could soak up this stuff like a sponge because it's SO helpful: like how to pick out scallops at the store, or why you need to use the vodka in the tempura shrimp, or how to form a tart shell. These are all recipes where they compared lots of recipes and the test kitchen cooks chose the best--not just a bunch of recipes because they had flavors that were new. So, for example, while there are loads of recipes you'll come across and love that you may not have seen before like the caramelized onion dip rather than the usual "French Onion Dip", there are also the tried and true ones that they perfected, like deviled eggs. And they tell you why that recipe works the best.Even though this book is so loaded with recipes that you aren't going to have pages and pages taken up by photos (because the pages here all contain recipes--a huge amount) there are illustrations, like using a plastic bag to pipe the filling into deviled eggs, and how to do it for those cooks who have not used that method.The directions for each recipe are far more detailed than with most cookbooks. For example, rather than saying "Use a large pot" It will say "Use a pot that 9 quarts of liquid will fit in"...so for those who have no kitchen skills, you'll master everything like a pro without one ounce of confusion. For the pros, you'll likely pick up not only new recipes, but new skills as well. How can you not with this amount of info?You also have several versions of dishes so you can make choices. So while you'll learn how to clean shrimp easily and perfectly for the shrimp tempura, for example, you'll also be able to choose from several dipping sauces or even make several different ones so that your guests have choices. Such as:Teppanyaki Mustard Dipping SauceGinger Soy Dipping SauceChili Aioli Dipping SauceAll of which can also be used with the Spanish Style Garlic Shrimp RecipeEvery kind of recipe is available no matter what your special dietary needs are or what the occasion for cooking may be, whether a family meal or lavish gourmet party, whether vegetarian or all meat, appetizers, even spiced nut recipes and loads of desserts.At the start of each recipe it says "Why this Recipe Works" and you learn a lot from why that version is better than many recipes out there, and you know it will turn out right. As a bachelor this is about the only cookbook I need. The recipes work. I don't have time or patience to deal with "good idea" recipes that fall flat. What hooked me on Cooks Illustrated is their yeast-raised waffles. Amazing.The only knock I give it is that it still has that aspect of cookbooks where simplicity takes a detour. I don't have buttermilk powder. I'm sorry. I can't make those waffles.The amount of content you get for the price is amazing. This book is loaded with recipes. It's nuts. What's also cool is that if you're searching for recipes and the internet points you to Cook's (and you're blocked by their paywall), chances are high that it's in this book. So it's like having an online membership with them.

This cookbook is a must for anyone interested in cooking. It includes a wide range of recipes from salads, meats, breads, quick breads and so on. Cooks Illustrated is known for having recipes that taste great and are essentially fool proof. I've used it frequently for pizza recipes and other random ones. There are more recipes in here than I will ever use. I use other cookbooks and Pinterest as well, but there are many recipes online that are not actually very reliable.I've also learned that not all cookbooks are great. After going through some online flops, I go back to my Cook's Illustrated to see why the recipes didn't turn out.The only downside is that the recipes in there are classics, but I think it is essential to understand how to cook these before trying more adventerous culinary endeavors. Also, there aren't really illustrations. Only a few random ones to demonstrate how to perform a certain technique. I guess you can't blame them because the book is already so fat. Imagine how huge it would be with increased illustrations?

If you want just one good cookbook for an experienced cook, this is the one I would recommend. It has a huge number of great recipes.Cooks Illustrated is the brand of a very good cooking magazine, and these recipes come from 20 years of the magazine. They cover most everything. But they are abridged from the magazine, lacking the discussion of all the variations that were tried in evolving the recipe, and lacking lots of illustrations. Still, for a cook with some experience, this is about as good as it gets in one cookbook.But...For a new cook, I'd suggest the Cooks Illustrated FAMILY Cookbook. It has more explanations and illustrations, and for a beginner, that is helpful -- no, it's necessary. If you're thinking wedding gift for young couple, I'd go with the Family Cookbook instead of this one.If like me you enjoy a discussion of all the variations that were tried to develop the recipe, and more illustrations, then there is another choice, the Cooks Illustrated NEW BEST COOKBOOK. About half the recipes, more text and pictures. Much more fun to read! You'll get inspirations for tricks to try on other recipes. If you like that sort of thing, consider the New Best Cookbook.But again, for an experienced cook who wants just one all around cookbook, then I'd still suggest this cookbook as the one.

But, do not expect to be even close tofluent even if you can memorize every phrase in the book. Still, it will helpyou communicate enough to get by. Plus in the big cities, Hungarians are extremely well educatedso chances are if you make an effort, they will be pleased with you and probably just starttalking to you in English. Well, as long as you do not come on with an "I'm an AMERICAN" attitude.Act like you are something special and you may well just hear, Sajnálom, nem értem.

I was kind of hoping it was more of a regular dictionary. This is really hard to look stuff up in.

Has short Grammer introduction, a limited but useful dictionary, and the necessary phrases for most common situations

For a small book, it is very clear and usefully formatted. I used the pronunciation guide and approached the actual pronunciation very closely.

Great resource book, and fast delivery.

It's a start but it needs an auditory component and a little basic grammar.

I read a lot of books, and I often love what I read, but I literally (no pun intended) have not been this excited about reading a book since I was a kid. It's not just the story (or should I say stories), or all the ephemera and the clever, well-produced presentation. It's how it all combines to actually make you feel like you're in on it. That you're trying to figure it all out right along with Jen and Eric. Reading and re-reading The Ship of Theseus for clues and inferences to what's happening in the "real world". The whole time watching as J&E's relationship evolves. Then, if you're really adventurous, and you start tapping Google to expand your research, you'll find that the experience goes beyond the book. (Google: Eotvos Wheel) ***I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO THIS***I'll admit: when I opened the book for the first time, the second thought that went through my mind (after "How frigging cool is this?") was, "How the heck am I gonna read this?"So, for those of you asking that same question, let me tell you how I went about it:As cool as all the inserts are, trying to keep them from falling out of the book as you're reading is a pain, so take them out and use post-it notes to mark what page they came from, then put them in an envelope that you can easily access.Now, J&E's notes are not entirely in chronological order. You can generally go by the color of the ink between them to tell what phase of their story you're at.First, there's Eric's pencil notes to himself about the actual book. Then, the convo between J&E begins when Jen picks up Eric's book and sees his notes and begins commenting on them in the margins. He sees this and writes back. Those early messages are Jen: Blue Ink - Eric: Black InkAt some point after they go through the book a first time, they go through again. This time Jen: Orange Ink - Eric: Green Ink.Then a third time Jen: Purple Ink - Eric: Red InkFinally, a fourth time (which seems to be after the denouement, in which they retrospectively discuss what has transpired). These are less frequent, and both Jen and Eric are in Black Ink.***Read each chapter of the main text of SoT, ignoring all of Jen & Eric's notes. Upon finishing each chapter, you're going to want to go back and read only the blue/black notes and any referenced inserts. Then, move on to the next chapter. Just finished a very unique novel called S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst. This book is very meta, by which I mean there are 3 levels of story. The core story is the book itself, Ship of Theseus by V. M. Straka, published in 1949, which is a story about an amnesiac, known only as S., who's trying to figure out who he really is after waking up in a strange city. S. is then kidnapped and trapped on a mysterious boat and becomes involved in a conflict between a violent, oppressive industrialist and his rebellious workers.The second level of story is about the author of this novel himself, V. M. Straka, a secretive anarchist who seems to have written this book as an allegory of a real conflict and assassination conspiracy of which he was a part. But who was Straka really? No one, it seems, ever truly met him or knows his true identity before he was (supposedly) killed. Ship of Theseus was published posthumously by a long-time editor, F. X. Caldeira, who writes an introduction and includes various footnotes throughout the book, footnotes which seem to contain coded messages in an attempt to contact Straka, if he's still alive.The third level of story is set in the modern day. A grad student, Eric, has been working on his own theory of who Straka was and has written his notes in the book margins. An undergrad student, Jen, who works at the college library, discovers the book and writes responses to his margin notes, which starts a long conversation between the two as they trade the book back and forth with new notes. It's these margin notes that make the book especially interesting because, as the couple delve into different theories, their relationship develops and they begin to encounter some danger by people who don't want the truth to be known.As you can see from the pics, this is no ordinary book, and it includes all kinds of inserts (photographs, letters, etc.) that the college students leave one another as they try to figure out the S./Straka mystery. There are various ways you can decide to read S. but to read it you will need a lot of patience. But it's well worth it.If you like the "meta" idea of this book and are looking for something almost as creative, I would also recommend House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, a horror meta-novel.

This book is one of the few that I have read multiple times and have discovered something new each time.How dare J.J. Abrams team up with an author and effectively rob me of my free time. Now who will make hamburgers at McDonald's when all of my time is spent flipping back and forth in this book trying to discover every conspiracy.... I can't believe I even found time for this review.... I've gotta go... the book is calling me.

An excellent book to probate a small estate. But don't be misguided. Probate is a difficult and a time consuming process. We are in the final steps and have been lucky to have a court in a small (population) county where the court clerk could give us some time. The first hearing we had was using "Court Call" because we are an 8 hour drive from home to the court house. And fortunately our son is a lawyer (not probate) and would read the forms before we submitted to check for any errors. We used the book because the estate was not large and the will was quite simple and we thought we could do it ourselves. The book guides you well, but prepare to also use search on the internet to help you understand some of the steps and lastly, make sure whoever is doing the documents is somewhat OCD (Obsessive Compulsive) as the procedure requires strict organization.

This is more about the copy I got / seller, and I will update when am have read the whole book. I was disappointed to find I received a defective copy of this brand new book (how to probate an estate in ca). It seems the binding machine folded over the first page (it also wasn’t cut properly before it was folded). Really this is minor, the rest of the book is fine. But when I pay for a brand new book I expect it NOT to be defective. I can’texchange this, i have to just read it. If you are buying this book you know time is A major issue.

Great book, very helpful to get through a difficult time. Some counties do handle things differently, so it is not one size fits all.My experience was that it did no good to cancel deceased person's credit cards, which was recommended in the book. They never acknowledged receipt of the letter, although I sent a self addressed stamped envelope. They still kept credit lines open and kept sending credit card checks and statements. Finally, after three years, I received a letter from one company stating that they were closing the account for lack of use. Really, what took them so long? I called and wrote them! Shishhh!Ah, but I digressed, it was a great helpful book. Even if you are not going to handle a probate yourself, I'd recommend this!Better yet....have your loved ones make a trust.

It turns out I didn't need to go through probate and I missed Amazon's 30-day return window - so if you are looking for this at a discount, let me know. My mom had a very, very simple estate and the estate attorney wanted $8k that neither I nor the estate had, so I decided to see if I could just file the papers myself. I'm have no doubt my probate would have gone smoothly.

We recently had an elderly relative pass away. He owned no real property and with one exception his accounts were jointly held with another family member with rights of survivorship (JTWORS). There is one account which was not titled this way;from reading this book, we learned that 41 days after his death we will be able to present an affidavit to the financial institution to pass on the contents of that account to a surviving family member. No lawyer need be involved in this process, and we're able to avoid probate (and the expenses associated with it) to have those funds passed on.Really, this book should be read before it's needed. It has helpful advice on how to title assets (from your home to your brokerage accounts) to seamlessly pass them on to your heirs. With the new federal estate laws (2012) each of us could pass up to 5 million dollars tax free (not an issue for us or a recently deceased family elder) over the course of our life (including death) to someone else. The financial institutions won't offer you guidance on this as it's not to their benefit. The state of California would prefer you not to have an account co-owner so that they can more easily impound the funds in a dormant account. We each need to educate ourselves, and this book is a good resource for doing that. I've recommended it to other family members in California.

So this is THE BOOK that you will need. You have to read this book. This is the book that will walk you through it, step by step. Make sure you have a notebook, and a highliter as you read. In the back there are the necessary forms that you will need to complete and this wonderful book even walks you through filling those forms out for the most part.Yes, that is why I say a LIFE SAVER!! It is a thick book to read but I also learned that usually you don't have to do this sort of thing in a rush and no matter what YOU CAN DO THIS!!Good Luck, this is a great book.

I bought every Examcrackers 1001 book. I enjoyed the Chemistry and Organic, but this was the least helpful and poorly representative of MCAT passages. It is good as a forced review of the stand-alone Qs, but you'll need to know when you see a mistake in passage sections and to not take them seriously. I got a 13 on the bio section, but I'm currently working on a phd in biology related field, so I wouldn't credit that score to this book. I did not use any other MCAT bio review books, but did use Barrons flashcards and downloaded A&P podcasts for review.

I really enjoy the Examkrackers 1001 Series as I believe the help show clear examples of some necessary subjects important for the MCAT that could easily be missed. Also with so many questions, key concepts can really be practiced and learned well.However, that being said, my one problems with this whole series is that it seems the books are riddled with errors here and there. As a student freaking out at trying to understand every concept, it's not a great feeling to be in a state of confusion when it is the books writers error.

I used this book in conjunction with the exam krackers mcat study prep. I felt like this book did a great job giving me extra practice for the mcat. After going through the exam krackers books, I needed more practice ding passages in the biology section. This book has good solid passage and questions that in my opinion mimic the mcat as closely as possible. The book is divided into sections that go along with the exam krackers lectures so I suggest if you use exam krackers, to purchase this book before you start so you can go along with the lectures. This book was great for me as a supplement to the exam krackers series. It helped me score a 12 on the biological sciences section.

Great supplement for technique building. Don't hesitate to purchase if you want to improve your bio score! Although the book is from 2003 it still helps to build vital MCAT test taking skills, in addition to providing good information to aid studying.USE this as an AID to your studying, however; do not rely on this for total score improvement.

Extensive passage based content is a great way to prepare for the MCAT biological science section. This book is made of passage based questions and discrete questions, in proportion to what you will see on test day. The EK material is superior in the endocrine system, but is a little scant on the musculo-skeletal system and explaining the eukaryotic cell. I recommend supplementing that with other material like The Princeton Review.With that said, there is NO SUBSTITUTE for taking practice test and questions, and this book has them it spades. Beyond just content, it teaches you to pay attention to the wording of a question as well as the MCAT question format. I HIGHLY recommend this.

This book has a lot of bad errors. For example, a passage based question asks what bacterial (Not single celled eukaryotic) strain would be affected the most by an anti-mitosis agent, a rapidly dividing one, a moderately dividing one, a slow dividing one, or all equally. The CORRECT answer is all equally because bacteria don't undergo mitosis, they undergo binary fission, however the book's answer is the rapidly dividing one. If you can keep your sanity through errors such as this, this book will help you improve in biology, but if you get a few wrong that you were 99-100% sure in your mind about dont sweat it because its probably a mistake.

No great at all, don't buy it- waste of your time.

The questions and quick passages in this review really was great, I could simulate that worn out feeling you get as you start the biological science on the actual test by doing an hour of study in the Examkrackers Biology or O-chem book then going at it with all these questions. Many of the questions asked are very good thought questions and I didn't find as many mistakes as other reviewers had noted. I ended up doing each and every last question in this book I didn't think there was much improvement to be made once you hit double digits but I was happily surprised. For self-study before the new MCAT format comes out I totally recommend the these 1001 question books to solidify that science base.
