I was looking for some very early law of attraction literature and did find some interesting language that pertains here. However, I wonder how much of this message was distorted through the translation. I'll never know because I don't speak ancient Greek. Regardless, the wisdom is fascinating in its applicability to the modern day. This was a quick read - finished in an afternoon and certainly worth the time.

The Art Of Living is a small book (144 pages) with big messages. I consider this book a personal development classic because while it's a modern book (1994), it’s author Sharon Lebell's "interpretation" of the classic work by stoic philosopher Epictetus.Epictetus was born in A.D. 55 in the eastern outreaches of the Roman Empire. The book has been called the Western equivalent to the Dhamapada or the Tao Te Ching.It is a book of philosophical teachings in the stoic tradition. This interpretation is very easy to read because it has been written in modern language. You can read the original interpretations of Epictetus in his Enchiridion or Discourses, but those are not easy to read in comparison.This is also easy to read because it is broken in to 93 lessons or instructions (some are only a paragraph long, others a page to page and half at most), making this an easy book to pick up and read in parts during little moments of spare time.What I like most is that it's based on personal development of character, virtue and behavior. It instructs you on how to think clearly and how to work on yourself daily to become a better person. It's about action and application not just theorizing.The philosophy also recognizes that everyday life is fraught with difficulty, losses, disappointments and griefs and teaches you how to think right about these events and how to rise to meet challenges.I have this in my kindle, but I also picked up the original hard cover edition years ago and still have it. Even though I've read it numerous times, this one always stays on my shelf within arm's reach, to pull down and review, or where the mere sight of it will be a cue to remember the messages inside.

This book is perfect to read 5 pages per day, and within easy grab on nightstand (do not debase book by placing it to close to self help books, or modern political autobiographies). It is a book to savor and reread many times during your lifetime.

Hard to beat the wisdom of Epictetus! His thoughts are just as relevant today as they were when he wrote them originally. Great guides to a happy life with a lot less stress.

I am taking a college course on business law and ethics. I am required to write a paper and I chose business ethics as my topic. I soon found there has been comparatively few books written on the subject and that most are geared toward situational ethics. This book provided much needed balance for my paper. If only more people could understand the golden rule is not just a religious concept but a tool for better community and thus better business we would all be so much better for it.

It's a school text book. Nothing I'd read were not for it being required curriculum, but it satisfied it's purpose.

I am enrolled in a graduate program that, unfortunately, requires all papers to be written in APA format. APA is far and away the least useful or user friendly format ever devised (although a professor friend disagrees and thinks Chicago style is worse), and is largely used by social scientists. Since I am not enrolled in a social science curriculum, you might expect that I would be spared this horror, but someone sold the Dean an APA bill of goods (probably Beelzebub himself.) My theoretical question here is what, exactly, qualifies the American Psychological Association to develop a style and format for research papers? Wouldn't English teachers and linguists be more qualified, as in MLA format? Why is APA more qualified than say The Airline Pilots Association, or The National Prune Anti-Defamation League to develop a writing style? Just a question.I figured that since I was stuck using this fiendish format, I should learn to use it correctly. My school put out a "Users Guide to APA Format", but it is very general and almost totally ignores documenting electronic (internet) sources; thus, I bought this book. I am generously giving this book two stars inasmuch as most (but not all) reasonable situations are addressed in it, but the format of the book is virtually incomprehensible and frequently sends you to multiple different places to answer a simple question. (This shouldn't surprise me given the lack of logic found in APA style in general, I suppose.)Unfortunately even the latest (fifth) edition is woefully inadequate in answering very basic questions on documentation of internet sources, particularly addressing situations in which quotations from internet sources are included in a paper. The index is, likewise, next to useless, as looking anything up (if it happens to even be in the index, itself and unlikely development) will result in a wild goose chase of referencing around the book. This is but only one reason the entire format may be more useful to psychologists than those in the hard sciences.What the guide IS full of is useless trivia, for instance a section on the APA "Policy on Metrication" (needless to say APA mandates metric units), and a definition of "HSD" as "Tukey's honestly significant difference (also referred to as the Tukey a procedure)." While I am not saying that metrication or Tukey's honestly significant difference aren't important (though I am inclined to), I am saying that a book that dwells on minutia like that should definitely cover the basics of references, formats and citations first. Like I said, most (but not all) of the information actually is here, but good luck finding it.Perhaps APA should put out a guide for using this guide. Better yet, perhaps any format so cumbersome to use and needlessly intricate should be dumped altogether for a better format, like MLA. At this point I'm even willing to try Chicago style.

I purchased this from MagicBook1234...perhaps that should have been my first clue. However, I purchased from them because they had the best price and the reviews for the seller seemed to be good...then I started working on my paper and found GLARING issues with the spiral copy of the manual I received.There is no way this is the approved manual. Perhaps a first run or someone horribly plagiarized the book. Glaring issues are throughout. Ex: on page 67 of the spiral book: First sentence says "mtending" instead of intending. Page 68 says "10-year-olc*" instead of 10-year-old. There are level 2 headings not bolded when most are. I could go on. Be cautious when purchasing.

I am giving the low star amount because I believe I was sent a knock-off of the real thing. Although it was new and packaged, as soon as I pulled off the wrapping I noticed it had a horrid smell. I've never smelled anything like it, so it's hard to describe. But it's terrible! Then I began reading it. The pages were faded in some spots, and there are very bad spelling errors throughout what I have read so far. I had to go to my college bookstore and buy a copy from them, and I compared the real one with whatever the heck was sent to me. I am attaching pics to show how bad it is. There are a lot more errors, I am just posting a couple. I am returning it immediately. It sounds like most people are getting the real deal, but do be aware that there are bad copies going around as well.I just wanted to add that I am not talking about the errors that accompanied the first printing, this was supposedly a 7th printing with the "errors" fixed. This was a book that had clearly been badly re-typed by someone, as can be seen in the pics I included. This is a counterfeit product IMO.

I'm working on my master's degree in Library and Information Science and APA is the preferred style for my program. I was required to purchase this manual for one of my intro classes and needed to cite it for assignments, otherwise I think I could have probably done without it. The reason is that there are many free online sources for APA style guidelines, my favorite being the Purdue OWL website. While this book is well formatted and clearly written, it is simply much easier and faster to search a website for answers to most formatting questions.The main benefit I see for owning this book is that it offers many excerpts of sample papers and reference pages. Many APA formatting samples are available online, but having this book to refer to takes away any doubt about the correct formatting. Other than that I don't see a lot of benefits to owning this book, other than that it goes into more detail about style rules than online sources. My biggest wish has been that the APA would publish a searchable version of their guide online; I would happily pay good money for the convenience!

It's pretty comprehensive...has a lot of stuff about publication...and publishing...as well as the usual APA punctuation and grammar rules for the style.If your an undergrad student...this manual may be more than you're looking for when it comes to writing college papers.A lot of what this book has, and more, can be found on "Purdue dot edu" for free. And, it's comprehensive as well.If you're looking for a quick reference...I recommend APA: The Easy Way by Houghton and Houghton. I have grown to appreciate it's simplistic approach to the APA basics .Hope this helped...

Reliving my childhood with these stories. I should have ordered the original copies since some images and stuff changed in the books, but they are still great looking!

If I had seen that the art had been changed I wouldn't have even purchased this. I'm very disappointed. The original books had such great, creepy artwork. This version has really generic, cartoony pictures.

THE ORIGINAL ART IS BACK!!! I ordered this collection without reading the reviews (big mistake) so, when I saw that everybody was complaining about the books NOT having the original art I was so disappointed, but it was too late to cancel so I decided to return them in arrival, but to my surprise I happily realized that the collection they sent includes the original art that everybody loves!!! So don't hesitate, buy it, it's worth it. Beautiful books, beautiful art, total satisfaction 😊

These are NOT the original drawings. The drawings or illustrations were half the fun! They were often scarier than the stories themselves. This sucks.Picture one is what I got, picture two is what it used to be. Please warn people that this is not the original artist and show a sampling of the inside of the books. I gather that's why it's not advertised, though. Some people like me wouldn't have spent (wasted) the money on it if they had known the original artist wasn't used.

I was sceptical about purchasing this item after reading countless reviews of people recieving the reprint which had updated, bland art, but it I looked at the dates of the reviews from 2016 as opposed to reviews from 2018 and the reviews from 2018 showed that people were now recieving the books that had the original art as opposed to 2016 where people were getting the updated version. From a customer perspective it was very confusing deciding which reviews to trust because one says that the books do not include the original art and some say do have them. After deciding to purchase the item regardless I was very relieved to see the beloved books I used to love reading. In conclusion people recieved the updated art a couple years ago and left bad reviews because of that, but it seems that whoever is responsible for selling these books responded to the backlash and began selling the books with the original art that we know and love from our chilhoods.

This is a review for the 2017 reprint of the "Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark" trilogy.A few years back when the original Stephen Gammell illustrations were removed from these books, my heart sank. Newer generations would never know the absolute terror that waited for them between each page thanks to Gammell's nightmarish art... until now. Scholastic listened to the outcry from all the adults who grew up trying to avoid the empty look from the ghost with hollow eye sockets in "The Haunted House" or the cobweb-ridden corpse of the tragically trapped woman in "The Bride."The stories and illustrations are just as enjoyable and spooktacular as they were when the books were first published. Welcome back, Schwartz and Gammell!

I was very disappointed to find that the art in this set is completely different from what they used to have. All of the artwork has been replaced with super generic art that you could find anywhere, instead of the wonderful illustrations that were more chilling that the stories themselves! I have no idea why they would do such a thing.

I am furious. I have just found out that this COWARDLY publishing company has taken what was, for many of us, a classic work of spooky children's literature and swapped out the Stephen Gammell illustrations for saccharine sweet, homogenized, overly sweet, not-even-remotely-spooky illustrations by Brett Helquist.Many of us grew up with the Scary stories to tell in the Dark collection by Alvin Schwartz and were haunted by the gorgeous and creepy artwork of Stephen Gammell. Stephen's artwork is part of what made these books so haunting, so notorious. And now they have brutally altered these books beyond reprieve.Not only did the cowards quietly change the artwork, after standing by the artistic integrity of this collection for thirty years, bu they do it for the thirtieth anniversary edition on-ward!To change this is like changing the original Dr. Seuss Illustrations or the original Alice in Wonderland illustrations. it's just not right. This was a shameful movie by a cowardly company giving in to long standing pressure that the pictures were "too scary."Brett Helquist is not a bad artist. But he was used here as a pawn for an overly politically correct move to make a collection of scary stories "tamer" and "more acceptable." A move that would have insulted the likes of Ray Bradbury.If there is any integrity left at all they will restore the Stephen Gammell illustrations.

So glad this set was released. I grew up reading these gems and am delighted to see that they've been faithfully restored to their former glory. All of the original artwork is included, unlike the previously released set that was somewhat sanitized. I enjoyed these books immensely in elementary school and now looking upon them as an adult, I still find them entertaining. I purchased this for my nephew and he too is enjoying them. Fair warning, yes, the images tend to favor the macabre and even the grotesque (google image for a taste). Having said that, know your audience. You may want to start by reading these stories to your children and selectively showing them the artwork after you've gauged their tolerance.Give them a whirl, if you dare....

The poor review is for the edition and not the material. Avoid this Smith and Brown edition. As with many plays that are old enough to be in the public domain, there are numerous editions, some better than others. In fact, anyone with a Xerox machine can make their own edition of this play, and this is pretty close to that. This is the worst edition I have ever seen of a script. The formatting is ponderous and poorly done. Character names are barely differentiated from the text that they speak; Stage directions are often buried in the text with little to differentiate them. In addition, the text goes so close to the edges that one sometime needs to break open the binding just to read it. There is not introduction, no annotations, nothing of interest to make up for the fact that this edition is annoying to read. If this were the only edition available, that'd be one thing, but there are so many options. I went to a bookstore and picked up this edition:The Importance of Being EarnestIt's fine. It's easy to read. It has introcutory material and other frills if you're into that sort of thing, and it's cheaper. Get that one or some other, not this one.

Of Wilde's plays I have only seen The Importance of Being Earnest which is wonderfully witty and ridiculous. Collected in this volume are the title play along with Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband and Salome. The first four are light entertainment filled with witty dialogue. The last, Salome, is macabre and dark. I was curious about that one because of the hubbub over it being a play based on scripture but laced sexual overtones. I'm glad I read it because its not something I would want to go to see like the other four but in Wilde's defense, the Herods were a nasty, incestuous and murderous bunch and he does not do injustice to John the Baptist or Christ. The most disturbing part about the play is when Salome kisses the severed head of the prophet. She does this because he refused her advances while alive.The illustrations in the book are the originals done by Aubrey Beardsley and they are only in Salome. I liked his illustrations in Macmillan's The Happy Prince and Other Stories but I found the ones for Salome nasty, grotesque and bordering on porn. Not to my taste at all.The rest of the book still merits my five star rating both in content and quality.Macmillan's Collectors library editions are well made beautiful pocket sized hard covers. There are two other Oscar Wilde books in the collection: Picture of Dorian Gray and The Happy Prince and Other Stories.

It would be all too easy to dismiss this play as a light romantic comedy. Although it is about a series of near thwarted romances – the stuff of a million ‘chick-flicks’ and romantic comedies going back as far as the eye can see in drama – this is also something much, much more. It is also a delightfully amusing commentary on human sexual relations, the English class system and (much more importantly) a perfect mirror on the amusing excesses of human selfishness. In fact, some of the best lines in the play, and the funniest lines in the play, highlight our near infinite capacity to love ourselves. To quote only a few and without hardly looking:“If you are not too long, I will wait for you all my life.”“Oh! Not at all, Gwendolen. I am very fond of being looked at.”“If I am occasionally overdressed, I make up for it by being always immensely over-educated.”“I don’t play accurately – anyone can play accurately – but I play with wonderful expression.”“You see, it (her diary) is simply a very young girl’s record of her thoughts and impressions, and consequently meant for publication.”The other terribly interesting thing in this play is the role of family. Not only are the families quite dysfunctional, even when people know who their parents are, but the title character is about as confused about how he fits into the complex world of family relations as it is possible to make someone. The thing that makes the line about the handbag quite so funny is that this handbag is about the closest thing he has to family in the entire world. As Pascal once said, we laugh and cry about the same things.Wilde is, it hardly needs to be said, the closest thing to a God we are likely to have visit us on this planet. There are, for example, even now, more than 100 years after his death, entire companies that produce desk calendars that would not be in business if not for the endless supply of quotes he provides for the foot of Monday the Ninth of February and so on.If humour comes in a spectrum and slapstick is at one end of that spectrum, then this is the other end.

We recently saw Importance of Being Ernest in the theater. I enjoyed the witty play so much that I decided to get a copy of my own. This book contains Wilde work in the first 76% of the content, the remaining 25% is marketing material about leading a Book Club. This filler material inflated the size of the book. I used to buy these soups at the supermarket and was very happy when they came out with this cookbook! I'm by no means a chef, but the recipes were pretty easy to follow and the soups tasted great! The chili was very easy to make and came out pretty close to the one I used to buy in the store. I also tried the Mushroom Barley and the Indian spiced tomato, and while these 2 were not exactly how I remembered them, they were still excellent! I HIGHLY recommend this book. The recipes are mostly vegan but they threw in a few that are not.

I have been living on those soups ever since they started showing up in our company refrigerator (thanks Andrew) and could not wait to get my hands on the recipes! My clear favorite is the Mushroom Barley and now I have started making them for my family as well. I'm really not a dedicated cook, but the recipes were super easy and the soups tasted great! Most of them are vegan - so I sometimes take some liberties and add my favorite poisons!

I LOVE this cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and the flavors are amazing. Whether you are a home cook or a professional, this book will work for you. The ingredients are easy to find at the supermarket, and the photos give the book a very homey feel that make you want to try all the recipes. Emily's soups have fed my family all winter long. Some of my favorites are the Mulligatawny ( I like to add chicken), and the the Veggie Chili. My youngest daughter loves when I make her Veggie Chili Nachos, and my older daughter loves the Veggie Bisque. Also, the White Bean and Kale with Sausage is so yummy! I highly recommend this cookbook!

I am obsessed with the recipes in this cookbook and I can't believe that Emily has published the recipes for us all to enjoy (thank you!!). Each one is healthy, delicious and family friendly. I've already made the veggie bisque and the veggie chili (both delish!). The recipes were easy to follow and I love all the photos as well. I highly recommend this book! Buy one for yourself and a friend.

I've had the opportunity to try these soups and they are DELICIOUS. I now have the ability to recreate them at home and enjoy them with my entire family. And you do too!This book packs a lot of punch and the author explains each recipe step by step (with pictures). It's basically fool proof instructions.I bet you one of these recipes will become a staple in your home as it is mine. Super Tomato, Veggie Chili and the Sweet Potato Quinoa soups are my favs!

This brilliant soup cookbook is full of tasty and healthy soups that everyone can try. I really liked that many have some sort of spice added and they are easy recipes to follow. Definitely keen to try more of these recipes as winter arrives.We use the metric system here in NZ and some measurements are given in grams, would be great to have all in grams as well as ounces for those needing them.

Wow...thank you Emily for making this cookbook!!! I received it last evening and I had to make the veggie bisque Mac-n-cheese tonight for dinner and my whole family loved it. Little did they know I snuck in the veggies! This cookbook is a must for anyone who wants clean, delicious food. I've always loved your soup and am so happy I can now cook like you. I'm still making yummy, yummy noises. This cookbook is a must!!!!
