I had seen the movie 'Breaker Morant' many years ago and loved it. I knew that the movie was based on this book from the movie credits and spent time, on and off, over the years looking for this book. Finding it here on Amazon I quickly bought it. The story here in this book as told by Lt. G. Witton is, I must admit nothing like the movie. That is why when movies are made from books they say based on the book. There are many differences between the book and the movie. I guess for dramatic purposes. Even though the book is titled Scapegoats of the Empire: The True Story of Breaker Morant's Bushveldt Carbineers, this book is primarily the story of Lt. Witton and his involvment the Boer War, his involvement with Morant and the court-martial. If you are expecting the book to be an exact telling of the movie its not. There are many dramatic licenses taken with the movie and if you read the book you'll know why. One thing that comes out in both the book and the movie is the British military and governments willingness to appease foreign governments for the sake of what ever it is they wanted to appease and for their shifting blame to subordinates of policies that would be banned today in times of war. The so-called kangaroo court (no pun intended) is in full force here in the book. The book starts slow and then picks up after Witton joins the carbineers. Pick up the book if you are interested in history.

I have been fascinated by this story for years. And for decades, I have looked for a reasonably priced copy of this book, written by George Witton, the only one of the three spared execution. Although it's not the best written book ever, it is priceless to me, because I am finally hearing this story from one of the men who lived it and who is telling the story in his own words.

This is a wonderful work, well deserving of five stars, detailing the facts that led to the unjust execution of three Australian officers in the British army. from the Bushvelt Carbanieres came a new work "Commando". It was a Boer word for guerrilla fighters. Men & women and children who fought without uniforms committing terrible acts of cruelty & destruction. It was a new kind of war for a new century. The gentlemen's wars were over. This has such relevance for our own day. Are today's "Terrorists" soldiers to be treated as soldiers according to custom? It is food for thought, discussion & decision.

A perfect tie in to the Breaker Morant film. This book gives you so much more info on the war and court martial. If your a fan of the film or want to learn more about the Boer War and the cost of empire building then this book would be for you!

Wonderful book about a troubling time, does not try to absolve Morant, just that he was the fall guy thus the name of the book

What a delight to find a book written by a Westerner that (at least to my taste) demonstrates some realization and not just scholarliness. This book is so refreshing and celebrates what I hope are the first drops of what will become a rain of dharma blessings by non-Tibetan authors. Another author who also has some realization is psychologist Daniel P. Brown.Eh Ma Ho!The introduction, some 55 pages, is very well written and nicely demanding of our attention – instructive. The other 120 or so pages, the actual commentary by Brunnhölzl is more loosely written and while still quite rewarding, but not as succinct as the introduction, IMO.It is clear that Brunnhölzl practices what he preaches, so to speak, and his writing represents, as mentioned, some actual dharma realization on his part. How welcome!If I have any criticisms of this book, they are few. Brunnhölzl’s style of writing is very consistent, but perhaps that consistency deserves IMO a little more variation or “breathing” (like expanding and narrowing of the scope) that resuscitates the reader as we dig through his meaningful text. At least I find this true of the commentary section.And my other criticism is that the great many analogies, etc., while they liven up the texts, are a little mundane. I wish they were more poetical.Other than that, this book is a good sign of what I look for in modern Western Buddhism. Years ago, when I asked my Rinpoche when we could stop doing our practice in Tibetan and use English, his answer was that it would take time and we are waiting for Americans to enlighten themselves and write our own texts and sadhanas. Hmmm. That had not occurred to me. LOL.

Life changing book, because it changes your view of "reality." It delves into the heart sutra, and explains "emptiness". It was recommended by Pema Chodron, otherwise I never would have chosen it bc of the odd title.

Who knew the Heart Sutra would be so much fun to explore? The examples used in this book were easy to work with, like how the author talked in depth about how we misinterpret the word 'empty' and all the connotations we put on it, like 'empty wallet'. He did not dumb down this compact sutra, but rather he elevated the way I think about it. I've loaned out my copy to a friend, and am thinking of buying another for my own reference in case I don't get it back. It is well worth reading, and more than once. I am delighted to find an explanation of the Heart Sutra that is both meaty and manageable.

It's very readable, and the author appears to have read all the prior commentaries, so he sums up what has been said before, explains the issues clearly, and makes a convincing case as to why the sutra is so significant. I learned a great deal and it held my attention.

EXCELLENT read about the Heart Sutra, looking into every possible aspect of this traditional chant of the Buddhist practitioner.Nirvana is already here.

When seeing this book, one might perhaps have two mistaken ideas. One is saying: "Why another commentary on the Heart Sutra? Aren't there many already?" Another mistaken thought could be: "The books by Khenpo Karl Brunnhölzl are too technical, too difficult; this is not for me." When you open the Heart Attack Sutra book, you will find for yourself that both of these expectations are false.The author chose a masterful balance in writing this commentary. On one hand, it is lively, experiential, humorous, and full of practical instructions on how to engage the Heart Sutra as a contemplative manual: how to take the words of the sutra to one's heart on the meditation cushion and how to use the message the ancient sutra conveys in everyday life in today's world. The essence of this approach is captured in this quote from p. 142:"The Heart Sutra is not primarily about all phenomena (be they skandhas or the four noble truths) as objects, but it is always pointing back to our mind as the subject and how it deals with all these objects. How do we deal with our eyes, our ears, our nose, our tongue, and our body? How do we deal with our sense perceptions? How do we deal with our suffering? How do we deal with the causes of suffering? How do we deal with our path?"On the other hand, this is no dharma-lite booklet for bedtime reading. Khenpo Karl brings into his narrative the vast knowledge of the Prajñaparamita sutras commentarial tradition, skillfully quoting definitions, classifications, etymologies and meanings of the technical terms quoted in or associated with the sutra, accompanied by present-day examples elucidating the meaning.The author based his Heart Sutra commentary on the Indian commentaries, selected Tibetan commentaries as well as Chinese and contemporary Western commentaries and he refers to them throughout. He is also relying on his extensive study of the commentaries on both explicit and hidden meaning of Prajñaparamita as evidenced by his voluminous publications of Center of the Sunlit Sky, Gone Beyond I & II and Groundless Paths.As for the content, the book consists of the meaning commentary in the Introduction followed by the word commentary going through each passage. Khenpo Karl comments on a word or a sentence of the sutra from the technical point of view and then illustrates how this passage can be readily used for contemplation, for practice, for spiritual transformation.Finally, the book also includes an instruction on the practice of the Prajñaparamitahridaya Sadhana by Mahasiddha Darika. Even though this sadhana has been translated and commented upon elsewhere (Elaborations on Emptiness, Donald Lopez), without Khenpo Karl's clear practice instructions, it is difficult if not impossible to put this lovely visualization - which is enacting the story of the Heart Sutra, very much like a theatre play - into practice.In sum, when enjoying such balance between precision and readability, a miracle of a sort happens: while reading this book, you are drawn into the narrative as if wanting to finish it in one sitting - like a detective story with a humorous undertone - and at the same time you are being served the dharma without compromise, gems of traditional scholarship, which in other contexts would put most people to sleep. But here both approaches not only can coexist side by side, but are even enhancing each other, feeding the fire of prajña arising from such delightful reading. And so one can rightfully ask a question: Isn't the Heart Attack Sutra book an evidence of the genuine western Buddhism actually taking root, where the western approach to narration is employed without compromising on the precision of the traditional discourse? It is, for me. For that reason this is not yet another, redundant commentary, this is a unique masterpiece and is worth reading for all who aspire to be followers of the genuine tradition of the Heart Sutra.This Heart Attack Sutra is truly the attack for the ego's heart and therefore it is a delight for the heart aspiring for freedom.

Since 1991, Douglas Coupland has written thirteen novels published in most languages. He has written and performed for England's Royal Shakespeare Company and is a regular columnist with The Financial Times. This is a book you can ready quickly, but it will take a long time to process. The authors boldly lay out the end result of various trends we are all cognizant of on some level, but not likely fully aware of. Our brains are changing, our sense of self and community is changing as a result of the internet. How we live and work is about to radically change. Many of the wheels are in motion, others can be altered if we work to build closer human relationships and authentic communities. The alternative is a world of physical isolation and virtual connection where our sense for reality will skew to the latter. Everything can be disrupted, our governments, even our sense of money / currency by the internet. These authors claim that it will happen and lay out what this world will feel like. Don't read unless you are willing to accept some ideas which will disturb your sense of status quo lasting for much longer.

I really shouldn't try to critique this item. At nearly 80, I'm at least 50 years beyond its target audience. I had hoped it might help bridge the gap; it didn't. I use a computer -- I'm using one now -- but I'm not really a member of the computer generation the way some of my grandkids are. So I saw parts as shallow, parts as pompous, and much as just unintelligible. And overall, depressing. Whatever either my wife or I reads the other usually does; I haven't even suggested that she attempt this. My two stars are really a gift, based on the inherent unfairness of any assessment I make.

I check this book once in a while, it's a deep stuff, very relevant to internet age

This is the first book I have read from this author, but trust and believe I will be reading more, if not all of his work.First of all, I devoured this book in one sitting. I just could not bring myself to put it down! The parallel plots were equally riveting on their own, but together just demanded my attention until the last page.Second: Usually, I am able to figure out the plot twist of any mystery half way through, at the latest, and keep reading to see how it's executed (hazards of my degree field). Not this time! This novel is so well written and clever that I only realized the resolution as it was given to me.Finally, this author is smart, but not in the 'speaking over your head' way. You never feel lost, even when they are discussing legal proceedings. The characters are intelligent but human, and very relatable. Not a single perfect person in the batch, and I love that.

I have to admit after I read A Criminal Defense I wasn't a big fan of William L. Myers, Jr. Nevertheless, I read An Engineered Injustice and was pleasantly surprised. I was them actually enthusiastic to read this, Mr. Myers' third offering in the series. In the end I'm glad I stuck with Mr. Myers and watch him progress had an author.I'd go so far to say this is the best of the series. Mobsters, gangland war, murder, and mystery make up a compelling if somewhat predictable story. But, Mr. Myers does leave just a little back to give the reader a bit of a surprise.One of the most enjoyable aspects of this story was the subplots and side stories with a central theme running through all of them. Most enjoyable of all is how Mr. Myers manages to tie all the side stories into his main story - albeit loosely.

A Killer’s Alibi is the third book in the thrilling Philadelphia Legal Series. You do not need to read them in order. I do recommend reading A Criminal Defense and An Engineered Injustice. They are enjoyable reads on their own and together.This is an excellent legal thriller with great plot lines and realistic characters. As the book unfolds, you’ll be on the edge of your seat till the end. In and out of the courtroom, you’ll never be bogged down with legal terminology. As with the two previous books in the series, this one stands on its own. The reader is engaged throughout the entire book. I like how it all ties together at the end. Myers never leaves you disappointed, only wanting more.Thank you to William L. Myers Jr., NetGalley and Thomas and Mercers for providing me with an early copy. For this you get an honest review.P.S. I hope there’s a book four!

William L. Myers Jr. Is such a gifted writer. I was delighted when I realized he had written a third novel. Once you read the first few pages, it is difficult to put the book down. It takes talent to write page turning novels!!!! He is high on the list of favorite writers of legal novels. If you are looking for a great book to read I highly recommend begin with the first book. That way after you finish it you will have two more great books to read. I will now wait and look forward to reading his next book. I gave the book 5 stars and each star was earned!!!!!

This novel is surprisingly well designed and one that is a great page turner. I began reading it at lunch and stayed up all night to finish it! The characters each have synonymous character. Nothing is done-said without a connection to another detail. This novel demands a mind that can keep track of minute details. The author carefully and craftily weaves all together through Mick, the attorney, who seems to believe he is a pawn but in reality is sharper than he thinks. Perhaps,he is his own pawn. Do not decide “who dunnit “ until all parallels are revealed. The ending is a bit of a heart breaker.

I love legal thrillers and this was a very good one. It contained suspense, mystery and was full of thrills. Kept me guessing from start to finish and I was surprised at how it ended. Gave it 5 stars because I really enjoyed all of the characters and the parts they played. If you like figuring out mysteries, you will like this book too.

Wow. What a ride! Although this is the third book in the series you don't need to read the others to understand and completely enjoy this one. What I love about this series is that there are common characters in all books, but it isn't dedicated to spotlighting the same 3 or 4 with the others there simply for support. We get to learn more about all of the characters in each installment.The dual plots were shaped to keep the reader guessing until the end. The writing is succinct yet appropriately descriptive and peppered with legal explanations when necessary. The characters are developed realistically.I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this intelligent and suspenseful novel. Now I must wait patiently for the next installment!

Great read. Love how the writer is able to move the reader through so many emotions and then hits you with a surprise ending. I'm ready for more!

The best purchase I have made toward school that I have made yet. It has helped me a lot specially since I have been out of school for 16yrs

I still use this guide, because it goes line by line, word by word, put the comma after the date, write n.d. for no date, etc. It emphasizes things like Never spell the Author's first name, only write the initial, and other nuances that are glossed over in the more up to date and official versions. I find it very easy to use, and I get A's on my papers because I do not lose points on style issues.

Do not buy this unless you have the opportunity to see one first, or are willing to return it. THIS GUIDE COVERS FORMATTING ALMOST TO THE EXCLUSION OF EVERYTHING ELSE IMPORTANT IN APA. I bought this for help with an editing job I do part-time for a professional journal. It is so inadequate, it will go straight into the garbage can. There are free online APA style Guides which are by far better.There are eight chapters in this.The first 6 are about page setup, grapics, citing references, and other basic stuff. These cover the first 91 pages. The bulk of the rest of the book is about setting up reference lists! Over 100 pages for this. I suppose someone may need this much on it, but I suspect most don't. It usually gives an example of a reference and then gives step-by-step instructions to make your own. I do mean detailed. "At the left margin, type the author's..." If you need this much detail, you probably need instructions telling you to turn the page too.Punctuation and spelling is covered in Chap 8. It contains TWO pages! It is so simplistic as to be worse than useless. It is more of a joke.This book contains little but instructions for fromatting. Perhaps it is my fault that I did not read the detail about this thing before ordering, but for some reason--call me a fool--I thought an APA users guide covered all the APA. I was certainly wrong there.

My University requires Master's students to use APA 5th Edition. So, when I checked the inside of my new book (this one) I read that it corresponds to the 5th Edition, but other students in my class were having different style basics, so I feel I can't trust it. I checked with the American Psychological Association and they said "We cannot endorse a non-APA product. There are a lot of them out there, and they are riddled with mistakes." So the APA does not recognize this edition. Also, the inside of this edition says "This book is intended for undergraduate use only" - something they don't tell you before you order.

Although this book is handy in its step by step instructions for some of the reference types out there, I found myself having to do additional searches online for how-to information on citing sources. And in using the index, I found that some of the page numbers were inaccurate! This book is helpful in the most basic ways, but not complete. It seems to beat to death some reference sources, and completely neglects other types! Annoying.
