Although he had "culled" many elephants as a game officer in Zaire and elsewhere, safari leader Capstick ( Death in the Long Grass ) had never killed a tusker. Here he records his part in a legal hunt with a company licensed by the Namibian government to take 10 elephants annually in the northeastern region of the country, part of the northern Kalhari Desert, where some 1000 old bull elephants range, about a dozen dying of old age each year. The sparsely populated area is home to the Bushmen, one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes, whose way of life the author intended to film. Another aspect of the safari was Capstick's signed agreement to hunt "problem animals" to reduce predation by lions and leopards, and he was accompanied by a native guard to ensure that the meat went to natives. In his lively account of adventures amid stifling heat and dust, Capstick tells of encounters with poisonous snakes, of learning about poison arrows from Bushmen and of getting his elephant. This book is a recounting of an elephant hunt that PHC took in the late 1980s. This edition is a nice hardback with lots of color photos. The DVD entitled Hunting the African Elephant with Peter Capstick could be considered a companion to this book (the safari described in this book was filmed - man of the scenes in the book are duplicated on film). The story covers PHCs tracking of various elephants, some of the daily ups and downs of camp life on safari, and a dramatic showdown at the end. There is a wealth of information in this book about a wide variety of topics beyond just hunting elephants. Capstick discusses the Bushmen of Southern Africa and how contact with modern society is dramatically changing thier culture, the poison used by the Bushmen on their arrows (it comes from grubs!), the dangers of the puff adder (what a nasty snake), the synergy between hunting and conservation, the effect that a .470 Nitro Express round has on a termite hill (!), and a bit about the anatomy of elephants. One of the less favorable reviews of this books states that it is less `exciting' than some of his earlier works. I would generally agree with this in the sense that this book is not filled with harrowing stories about hunting and safari that verge on tall-tales (although the first chapter about the leopard hunt is about as close as anyone is going to get and survive). It is a more measured, realistic recounting of a relatively modern safari. If you are looking for stories about dangerous encounters with big game, PHCs earlier works are probably more your cup of tea. If you want to know what it would be like to go on a modern safari without all the hyperbole associated with hunting dangerous game, this may be exactly what you are looking for. This is a good, if not uniquely outstanding, story of safari hunting.

It was great to get all the clear photos of Capstick. This book is packed full of them. I rate it in in the top three of Capsticks books. Death in the Long Grass being number one Death in the Dark Continent Number two. If you get this as you're first Capstick book it will be nice because you will be able to put a face with the name in the other books. Iive read about 9 of his books and only have two more left to read. They are all good.

Peter H. Capstick and Peter Allison write about the same animals in the same countries. But their stories are very different. In Allison's world the charging elephant stops at the last moment, in Capstick's world it doesn't. It's good to know both. You learn something from both. I have nothing but contempt for shooters who come to Africa and are driven to a spot from which they can safely shoot animals while surrounded by armed guides. The whole "hunt" may take just a few hours. I've seen Americans "hunting" this way in South Africa. I greatly respect people like Capstick who risk their lives. And know how to tell stories with important details, like the fact that you need bloodshot eyes because animals can see clear eyes from a long distance.

Excellent book. Having hunted Namibia recently, this book is a very accurate rendition of the countrys topography.

I really enjoyed this book. While it was not as action packed as some (most) of his other writings I think Mr. Capstick managed to weave together an overall very enjoyable story. Also I really liked the pictures, and how often do I get to have something in common with my four year old like that?! Seriously though, another great read.

This book is definitely not vintage Capstick. Apart from the first few pages it was a waste of time, unless one is Interested in the habits of bushmen, and their activity.Kind of like watching paint dry.

Having hunted within 60 miles of Bushmanland 4 times as well as having visited the commercial San village, this title was a pleasant reminder of Namibia and its people. Another hit for Hathaway. Those of us who are like-minded miss you Peter!

I enjoyed the characters that Mr. Capstick has come across both human and animal. I am also impressed with his thoughtful opinions on hunting ,poaching, and true conservation.

Best article to read when you want to discover the spirit behind Lilith...love the book it's a must for all the men that don't know much about the spirit of Lilith .

This is a very poor quality paperback, with a cover that looks pixelated. It's very short, basically a pamphlet. Despite the short length, the information density was scant (like when you were in high school and stretched a two page report into five pages by messing with font size and spacing). Pages were unnumbered, and contained no headings, which just gives a cheap vibe.The writing was... odd. Not the subject matter, but the style. It was like someone transcribed an unscripted podcast. The authentic spends a ton of time explaining how they can't include certain explanations. A bulky chunk of this book is just phrases like "I don't have enough room in this book to cover this material." along with very simple points. Nearly every page has at least one spelling, typographical, grammar, or formatting error. Any interesting information is overshadowed by the poor presentation.

Gave it three and that's generous. This is not a book it's a pamphlet wich I read in about two hours. The reading is very light and just the same stuff Wikipedia has. Author also admits to borrowing prayers that are modern and invented by imagination therefore nullifying any real ancient knowledge. Mainly conjection no real magic and the rituals seem juvinial at best.

I am a fan of Baal Kadmon's work - for me, he keeps the rituals simple yet powerfully effective, and he is not afraid to throw a little humor in there. The "Adam threw a hissy fit' section of the story of Lilith made me laugh out loud. As serious as a ritual is, I think a little brevity is just fine - if we cannot sometimes have a little laugh about, well, everything...what's the point?Anyway, if you are considering working with Lilith, this is the perfect book for the beginner. Even though I have only tried one, I am new at this and did my best, I am not really sure what came out of it, but I will try again. I have Baal Kadmon's brainwave entrainment to help work with the entities, and just purchased his incredibly inexpensive mediation course. Anything he offers, from books to mp3's are incredibly fairly priced, and packed full of information. SO glad I found this author.

Very little good info on Lilith, printing is awful. It reads like an unedited, poorly written high school report....

Excellent book written about one of the most unknown characters in our vocabulary. We've heard the name but know little about this intriguing character. This book is a good start to learn more, for those who wish to learn.

For an intro book, I found this to be quite helpful. Further more, I liked the opening prayer. Eloquent, and simple.

Finally a book that doesn't make Lilith an evil being but misunderstood and chastised for wanting to have a partnership and not be a slave to the will of another

Abdul W. Basit is Professor of Pharmaceutics at the UCL School of Pharmacy, University College London. Abdul’s research sits at the interface between pharmaceutical science and gastroenterology, forging links between basic science and clinical outcomes. He leads a large and multidisciplinary research group, and the goal of his work is to further the understanding of gastrointestinal physiology by fundamental research. So far, this knowledge has been translated into the design of new technologies and improved disease treatments, many of which are currently in late-stage clinical trials. He has published over 350 papers, book chapters and abstracts and delivered more than 250 invited research presentations. Abdul is also a serial entrepreneur and has filed 25 patents and founded 3 pharmaceutical companies (Kuecept, Intract Pharma, FabRx).  Abdul is a frequent speaker at international conferences, serves as a consultant to many pharmaceutical companies and is on the advisory boards of scientific journals, healthcare organisations and charitable bodies. He is the European Editor of the International Journal of Pharmaceutics. Abdul was the recipient of the Young Investigator Award in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and is the only non-North American scientist to receive this award. He was also the recipient of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS) award. We have all heard the slogan, reduce, reuse, recycle. But the author does it one better. She adds: refuse. Yes, we are to refuse anything that comes with a big disposal burden. Extreme? Probably. But at times I have found myself deciding not to buy something because of the packaging itself, so maybe I'm not so very different after all.Ms. Johnson admits to foraging for moss to use in place of toilet paper, but then decided that it was best to buy the kind of toilet paper that comes with individual rolls wrapped in paper - instead of plastic. When she had a couple of broken drinking glasses, she actually took the time to research online and called her local recycler, to be sure that the broken shards could be accepted at the recycling plant.She not only brings her own shopping bags, she brings her own containers (BYOC) for bulk items and even bakery and deli items. Her bakery is trained to put her weekly bread allotment into a pillowcase, which gets washed of course.By going to an extreme, she has learned a lot and is willing to share it with us. I shop the bulk section and cook from scratch. I get most of my clothes from resale shops. It takes us three months to fill a trash bag with things that cannot be recycled or composted. We have dumb phones and a TV antenna on the roof, but that doesn't mean we aren't incredibly tech savvy. We just choose not to afford many modern conveniences.This book actually had a few things to teach me. One of the ideas that leapt off the pages at me was the idea of letting the containers in my pantry limit the amount of bulk items I stock at any given time. Why keep five kinds of rice and six kinds of beans in stock at all times? By planning the menu more carefully and being more disciplined about using the food that was currently in the pantry, I could reduce the volume considerably.Not everyone can go to the Farmer's Market every single week, followed by the bulk store for anything else. But I can base my habits on this idea and visit each once per month. Instead of one jar for grain, maybe three or four. Less than I'm stocking now!I always hate having to throw away a plastic bag when and if I buy something from the deli. Why not hand them washable plastic containers? (Safer than breakable glass.) It's worth a try. Bring the empty spice bottle to the bulk spice section to refill, instead of having to throw away the tiny spice bag. It simply requires having the bottle weighed before adding the spice.See? Simple changes can be painless if you're committed to reducing the amount of stuff that gets used once and thrown away.Give this book a read if you're curious about simplifying and reducing waste in your wardrobe, your hygiene routine, and your home office. This book is full of DIY treasures including a pancake batter recipe, formulas for cleaning supplies, how to make kohl to enhance your eyes, how to use sugar instead of wax for silky legs, and instructions for making a mason bee house.Yes you can get these ideas off the internet too, but they're all in one place in this book. Rather than buy books, I try to borrow them from the library. Why store a book that I will not access regularly? With this book, it's a tough call. There are so many inspiring ideas, I'm sure I'll check this one out again in the future.

Heck our entire nation does it during American Idol.Read it with an open mind and don't try to do everything at once. I started reading her blog in 2011. Yes, I still bought the book (e-reader version) because instead of like a blog where the entries are written when inspiration strikes this book is more organized and does offer more info.When I tried this stuff I did not hold myself to all of her standards and I knew that these ideas would never take over in my home. When I got rid of all my excess in 2011 I made 2,500$ by selling it off on Amazon and got a notable tax deduction for all the donations. I also felt like I could breath.When I bought flour sack clothes I did with the intention of saving "some money" but I "knew" we'd always need paper towels. The joke was on me since it just struck me a few months back that the last paper towels I bought was in 2011. That was not a conscious change it just happened because we haven't needed them. Any time someone uses them they demand to know where I got them from because they really do work that well. Our utilities have not increased at all due to washing and drying them.Our utilities actually decreased because I had our city come pick up our second garbage can that we no longer needed.I'm using a double edged razor for shaving and now instead of spending 17$ for 5 cartridge heads I spent .37$ on a razor blade that lasts me quite some time before needing to be replaced. The first time I used it was awkward but after that it was smooth sailing. People look at it like its a rudimentary and I'm constantly asked "How don't you cut yourself!?" or told "Well that'd be fine for the legs but elsewhere would be a disaster!" Um it has a guard and no it works just fine EVERYwhere and its the first razor I've ever owned that hasn't left we with razor bumps in the sensitive areas. I'm saving a great deal of money here. A friend of mine just bought one and for the past week I've been getting texts almost every morning when he shaves "OMG WHY DID THEY EVER INVENT DISPOSABLES!!"We used reusable bags for produce and canvas sacks for ALL shopping not just groceries. We get compliments on them. Sometimes I'll get the .05 cent credit for all the produce bags because the cashier is enthused about them. I started buying the glass bottles of milk for my daughter when I tasted it I stood there stunned because I honestly had never tasted milk that good.It's not about living like a hippie. I know I don't live like one. It's not all about hugging trees either. I think it's about taking responsibility for our actions. We tell our kids to clean their rooms and yet when they say it's done we still check the closets and under the bed to make sure they didn't stuff anything there. How do we call ourselves adults when we're stuffing just on a larger scale.Seriously, read with an open mind and try things. The money you save using the tips exceeds the price of the book--- immensely.

Very good book to start with, though it can feel overwhelming at times. I find that's simply because there's so many ideas and things I didn't think of that I want to incorporate STAT. I love that she has lists of basic necessities in each room, how to make your own or find "zero waste" alternatives. She gives tips on dealing with people who don't understand why you are doing this including at the grocery store. I live in a studio apartment, so I have been using the book to motivate me as I purge each room. My apartment has never been cleaner, better looking, and feels (mostly) stress free. This was written in 2008 (2nd Edition). It’s 10 years old as of the day I’m writing this. The book is written for the complete technophobe who is afraid of computers and doesn’t know ANYTHING AT ALL about recording their voice. There are some good principles and basic information, but much of it is outdated now. For example, the book covers the topic of burning your production to CD or DVD for delivery and backing up production files to a CD library. Today, many computers are sold without even having a CD drive onboard. In contrast, the book gives one single sentence (pg. 41, pp 2) on Cloud storage. Cloud storage backup is the norm today with many opinions from iCloud to Dropbox to many others. Today, your agents and clients are very unlikely to want your work submitted on CDs. It costs money to ship and it costs money to store somewhere. They take up physical space and they costs you extra money to produce (discs, jewel boxes, labels, etc.) Almost no one wants a CD anymore. So a large amount of text in the book ends up being devoted to an outdated technology that is quickly dying.Even so, the worst part of the book was the constant attempt at comedy to the point that a good 2/3 of the book is unnecessary quips and jokes. It’s like listening to a silly radio morning show between 3 people who are too busy trying to be cute to actually get the news out. Two authors and the editor all try to be funny in this book. The humor is decent. It’s not like they aren’t clever, the are. But I found myself skimming over the pages to get past to silliness to find the information.We’re well past 2017 now, pass this book up and move on! Personally, I recommend Bill DeWees’s book “How to Start and Build a 6 Figure Voice Over Business” over this book.

I was looking for a book to explain how to record one's voice on a home computer. This very practical, easy-to-understand guide to voice-over recording comes through loud and clear, with excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Best of all, these guys "get" direct-to-computer USB recording, mixing software, the Internet, and other modern technologies, integrating them with timeless recording advice gathered in real careers.Hogan and Fisher tell you what works, and why what you think might work, won't. Rather than showing off their geek-speak chops, they use regular English and even poke fun at the technical lingo in the process of demystifying it. Other home recording books lavish excessive technical verbiage on how to pad your walls. These guys offer practical solutions (including "move") and even show how to make a portable acoustic foam-lined mic box. You will discover exactly what you need to buy -- although the USB-audio-interfaces section is surprisingly short -- and how to use it. They won't tell you exactly what mic to buy, though, and it's for your own good.Warning: the jokes are abundant, mostly terrible and distracting, especially the comments from "Prunella," whose parenthetic remarks, although they mercifully trail off, are the editorial equivalent of lip smacks. (The full harshness of this comment will be appreciated upon reading the otherwise excellent text.) Failed humor notwithstanding, the tone ends up being warmly self effacing and encouragingly user-oriented. These guys take seriously the job of helping you, including a strong index and glossary, and plenty of URLs.Chapter 12, Advanced Production Techniques, is alone worth the price of the book. Embedded in an economically worded step-by-step script for editing recordings are the exact frequencies to manipulate to address problems such as thin sound, dull recording, and sibilance. You end up feeling as though you have two buddies in the recording business; telling you every tip they know, and hammering on mistakes that could ruin your project. Don't let the light tone fool you: this is a seriously great book!

While I am not averse to keeping up with the changes in technology I was certainly cowed by the prospect of delving into this much technology at such a broad price range. This was especially so due to the goal of producing income from this endeavor. The authors of this book have given far more digestible information than I was able to glean from the myriad of websites and chat-rooms devoted to VO. Having waited until I finished the book to proceed with purchasing my equipment I am awaiting its' arrival. I will update this review in light of my attempts to record based on what this book provides. As of now, I am pleased to say that I have a working idea of what I am getting myself into and have thusly justified the expense, both to myself AND my wife (the book made all the difference there!).UPDATE 5/4/2013I have made some major purchases based on priciples of buying that this book sets forth and have not been disapointed! While my progress has been slowed by the birth of a child (read: lots of time and $ spent on diapers!) I am looking forward to picking things back up. So far I have exceeded the quality expected by clients within the smalltime arena I am currently producing work. I feel pretty confident as well that I will continue to do so for some time with the versatility afforded by my purchases. At this rate I am hoping to be able to make at least half my income through VO within the next 2-3 years.

I found it easy to read as well as humorous and motivational. In just a few easy steps, I was able to piece together a home recording studio. I also gleaned many valuable voice over techniques and tips from the book. I continue to recommend it to friends and acquaintances that want to get into the voice over business or who are already working voice over artists.
