Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History

Review

In supple readings of difficult, sometimes disturbing, yet always fascinating texts and contexts, Heather Love demonstrates that if we are to seriously engage with the queer past we must welcome the shame, fear, loneliness, obstinacy, and indeed backwardness that we encounter there. For all that, Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History, with its beautiful prose, stunning theoretical sophistication, careful attention to detail, as well as a hard-headed respect for the artists and critics whom it treats, is a stunningly hopeful book. Throughout Love links her critiques of celebratory queer criticism with a passionate concern for the opening up of progressive forms of intellectual and political life. (Robert F. Reid-Pharr, author of Once You Go Black: Choice, Desire and the Black American Intellectual)Heather Love is the Marcel Proust of contemporary theory. Disappointed love and tormented desire find a compassionate commentator in Love, who turns to queer history's tragic, lonely, and despairing figures, not to sublimate or to save them, but to recognize and to respect them. A wise, worldly, and winning book. (Diana Fuss, Professor of English, Princeton University)Now that, in the latest twist of tolerance, gays are required to flaunt their well-adjustedness, Feeling Backward may feel backward indeed as it contemplates the pain, anger, isolation, and sheer crankiness, prominent in literary figures of our queer past. But it is harder than ever to pause for thought―and not simply revulsion or compassion―over these prickly and unwholesome feelings, which lead an increasingly closeted existence in ourselves. Heather Love is in astonishing possession of the negative capability required by her undertaking, and her analytic finesse proves well-matched to her ethical delicacy. This book―together with the constellation of work it gathers around itself―belongs to what may deservedly be called a new wave in queer studies. (D.A. Miller, University of California, Berkeley)Like Lot's wife, I like to look over my shoulder too much at salty scenes from the shameful past-- though I've yet to turn into a pillar of the community. The delightfully named Heather Love makes all that hankering after pre-gay sex on Hampstead Heath seem slightly romantic and illuminates why and how the queer past is not always about waiting for Stonewall and disco to happen. (Mark Simpson, Editor of Anti-Gay)What does it mean to "feel backward"? By turning to, rather than away from, the texts of shame, injury, loss and failure that populate a queer past, Heather Love manages to shift queer studies away from the straight and narrow and back onto the slippery slope of stigma and dismay. Love refuses the triumphalist accounts of gay and lesbian progress and she insists on the spoiling of identity and on the political importance of "bad feelings." This is a rigorous book, a brave book, a wildly original and unrelenting book. It will be a central text in the backward future of queer studies. (Judith Halberstam, author of In a Queer Time and Place)It seems to me this discontinuous book is a little bit like the stations of the cross. I mean if you like to stop, and most of us do. And sometimes the street was filled with us. All thinking about someone else. They are the past inside our present. He just put one in a cab. I like Feeling Backward... a lot. (Eileen Myles, poet)In this interesting study of modernist literature and the challenges of history, the author encourages readers to consider how early-20th-century moments once labeled embarrassing, troubling, and evil continue to have an affect. Drawing from the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan, the Marxist philosophy of Raymond Williams, and other schools of thought, Love rereads the works of Radclyffe Hall, Walter Pater, Willa Cather, and Sylvia Townsend Warner--often considered to turn away from an image of a brighter future for queer readers--in order to consider the "backward feelings" of shame, depression, and regret and describe how these texts have fallen into critical disrepute among queer theorists and scholars...This book is for those interested in the politics and history of emotion and sensibility. (J. Pruitt Choice 2008-04-01)Feeling Backward is a brilliant work...Love looks fearlessly at literature from the past in which circumstances related to gender tend to produce victims rather than heroines. She establishes that our literature has been affected by homophobia and demands that we consider the implications of this fact. Love contends that we need to look at history and social politics less like Lot's wife, who's destroyed by looking back, and more like Odysseus, who listens to the past but isn't destroyed by it. The past haunts us whether we acknowledge it or not; we may be "looking forward," as we like to assure ourselves, even as we're "feeling backward." (Martha Miller Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide 2008-07-01)Feeling Backward is a brilliant book that attempts the "impossible" and succeeds. Using Michel Foucault and Eve Sedgwick as theoretical touchstones, and incorporating Raymond Williams's "structures of feeling," Heather Love "feels backward" to reimagine and connect with aspects of a queer past that had been rendered invisible. In doing so--in risking (as she puts it) the fate of Lot's wife in turning back to revisit a painful past--she embraces the ruins, the "fugitive dead," the loneliness and failures and all the "negative affect" that need to be reclaimed as part of that history...Love moves bravely backwards to that murky time, the "queer life before Stonewall," and then crosses the modernist line backwards to feel what has been lost. In doing so she has made a profoundly imaginative and powerful contribution to queer history. (Rick Taylor Feminist Review 2009-07-01)

The book is pretty straight forward and concise. I noticed a few typos, but I re-read the section a few times and was able to make sense of it. Mr. Cardoza doesn't sugar-coat gambling; he makes you aware that you will have losing streaks and advises you to "never gamble with any money that you are emotionally attached to." I plan to read the book a few more times to get a solid feel for the concepts and then hit the casino. Get yourself some basic strategy cards along with the book.

Nice informative book with clear instruction.

Cardoza has captured the perfect methodology for understanding and enjoying the game of Blackjack for those of us who want to have the greatest chance of winning the game. The handbook is well-structured and well-presented and will be of significant benefit to those who like not only to play, but to play with confidence and greater pleasure.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to increase their blackjack skills or would just like to learn the game.

Got this for my brother he enjoys it.

This book isn't really very original. I suppose that it is a good book for a new reader who is attempting to go from amature to a more substantial player. However, if you have already read a few basic books on Blackjack you are already past the point of this book. He essentially gets into "Optimal Basic Strategy" which is useful but not original to Cardoza. My biggest concern in the book is it seems he is primarily telling the reader to find a single deck blackjack game to win money at. That is problamatic for those of us who do not live near Nevada where they play single deck. At my local Casino where I play they have 8-deck games. The biggest issue of all is that he says on the title of the book that this is strategies for the non-counter but than points out how much more profitable and easy it is to count cards. If you want to really make money than find a book that teaches card counting. If you need help with your hand to hand descion making than this book could be useful to tighten up your game.

This book is a must-own if you are serious about playing blackjack

All you need to get better at blackjack without counting. Simple and straightforward.

If you’re familiar with the history of the computer industry, you’re no doubt aware that the Internet was conceived and developed by a U.S. Government agency called DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).Chances are that you don’t know that DARPA also invented drones both big and tiny, Agent Orange, the M16 Assault Rifle, sophisticated sensor technology, the F117A stealth fighter jet, MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles) that carry nuclear weapons, the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, robotic soldiers — and a slew of other military weapons systems, most of them still top secret.Remember Total Information Awareness, the predecessor to the massive data collection programs of the NSA that Edward Snowden revealed? DARPA was responsible for that one, too. The agency’s work also gave birth to less lethal technologies, including “real-time video processing, noise reduction, image enhancement, and data compression.” It’s difficult to exaggerate the impact of this little-known agency. All this comes to light in the pages of journalist Annie Jacobsen’s The Pentagon’s Brain, the first full-length study of America’s secretive military research agency.DARPA’s missionDARPA was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower over the strenuous objections of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and just about everyone else in the military establishment. “Its mission is to create revolutions in military science and to maintain technological dominance over the rest of the world.” No doubt there are many in the military and in conservative circles who are thrilled at how successful the agency has been in fulfilling its mission, their original unhappiness notwithstanding. The rest of us should be scared. Very scared. With its origins in the debates over the use of the hydrogen bomb and the policy of Mutual Assured Destruction in the 1950s, DARPA’s R&D programs have consistently been found on the far frontiers of military science. Among its least savory efforts (among a great many) were a project in 1958 to shield the United States from Soviet attack by exploding nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere and the use of the herbicide Agent Orange to defoliate the South Vietnamese forests sheltering Vietcong troops. DARPA scientists actually did detonate nuclear weapons in the atmosphere — and you know the story of Agent Orange.Unpleasant surprisesThe Pentagon’s Brain was the product of exhaustive research. Much of the book is based on formerly classified materials that have only lately come to light. Author Annie Jacobsen turned up startling new information in the course of her research. For example, she learned that the world came even closer to Armageddon during the Cuban Missile Crisis than anyone outside top government and military circles was aware: “four nuclear weapons were detonated in space” during those tense days, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union stood on the brink of total nuclear war. (Two of those were the aforementioned bombs sired by DARPA.)Though born in the grimmest days of the Cold War, DARPA’s work for more than a decade focused on the war in Vietnam. (The agency was originally called just ARPA until Congress got into the act.) That conflict led to the development of the M16 rifle and many other, less celebrated weapons of war. But much of the work involved the social sciences, subcontracted to the RAND Corporation, a name that will be familiar to anyone who lived through those times. ARPA contractors working for RAND helped to justify the notorious Strategic Hamlets program in which South Vietnamese peasants were forcibly removed from their villages and their lands and moved into heavily guarded new settlements. In fairness, the first round of ARPA social scientists found that the Strategic Hamlets were alienating peasants, but their findings were simply rejected by Pentagon leaders and more amenable researchers hired. Similarly, “the agency did not want to hear that the Vietcong could not be defeated. [Administrators] took the position that [the social scientists] had gone off the rails.”The electronic battlefieldThe high profile of many DARPA inventions notwithstanding, what may be its most significant creation was a “system of systems” that is known today as the electronic battlefield. Jacobsen calls it “the most revolutionary piece of military technology of the twentieth century, after the hydrogen bomb.” This concept encompasses the use of remotely piloted attack drones and technology that enhances the ability of individual soldiers. Ultimately, DARPA research is expected to extend the concept into “transhumanism — the notion that man can and will alter the human condition fundamentally by augmenting humans with machines and other means.” One such effort is the DARPA exoskeleton, which bears an uncanny resemblance to The Terminator and Robocop. Another is an effort to “allow future ‘soldiers [to] communicate by thought alone.”The Pentagon’s Brain is crammed with chilling examples of the brave new world envisioned by DARPA scientists. I would like to think that every member of Congress would read this book — and then take a much more careful look at funding for the Pentagon. Fat chance, eh?About the authorAnnie Jacobsen is the author of three previous nonfiction books about the Pentagon. One relates the story of Operation Paperclip that brought Werner von Braun and other Nazi scientists to the U.S. following World War II. Another is a history of Area 51, which may be the best known and most notorious American military base in existence.

The Pentagon's Brain is investigative reporter Annie Jacobsen's masterpiece, a brilliant tour-de-force that led to her being a 2016 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History. It is the history of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon's military and technology think tank that has been helping the US maintain military dominance on the battlefield since the post-WWII glory days of nuclear weapons development. Thoroughly researched, yet eminently readable, Jacobsen writes history with the pacing and character development of a suspense thriller. You won't soon forget the people or the places described in this book (which is the key to compelling history). The subtitle, "An Uncensored History of DARPA, America's Top-Secret Military Research Agency" lives up to the reader's expectations. The truth is, no author has ever tackled DARPA quite like this. Building from research in her previous books as well as her past careers as an LA Times Magazine historical reporter and a PJMedia investigative reporter, Jacobsen covers what is for her familiar ground. She follows it up with impeccable research and then brings together all the seemingly disjointed pieces into a cognitive whole. The effect is a book that is as thorough as it is fascinating. Will better books about DARPA be written in the future? Undoubtedly, but only because future journalists will have Jacobsen to thank for showing them the way. Jacobsen writes with the puritan objectivity that sometimes gets her in trouble with readers and subjects that have strong biases but it works well in this book. Some readers may disagree with some of her conclusions (her battle of Mogadishu assessment misses the mark). But it's nearly impossible for an outsider to thoroughly capture all of the right stuff when researching classified history. And she closes the book with her signature personal appearance in the last chapter. Because after all, good writers not only write history, they sometimes become a part of it. Highly recommended. Especially for those interested in Cold War history, intelligence operations, technology, US government secret programs, government conspiracy, futurism, research and development, military affairs, and scientific innovations. Read this book.

I loved this book. I purchased it in KIndle form and then recently purchased the hard copy to reread with notes. The book gives you a history of the Pentagon, inception of alphabet agencies of the government and the origins of psychological warfare as well as past and some contemporary research into weaponry. The portion on the Vietnam war was very enlightening.I recommend this book as well as her Area 51 book.

A very good book for those people interested in scientific research, development and military applications of the new systems. A couple of systems such as the AR 15/M-16 rifle, drone aircraft, night vision goggles, and robotics are in use today and have been updated since the book was written. I highly recommend the book.

An interesting history of DARPA, DOD's advanced research arm. It is heavy going at times but very substantive. Some of the early chapters stuck me as a bit sensationalist, looking back 50 years after the very different times. The book might not be of interest to someone with little knowledge or interest in Defense issues

A really fine book that will shock you. Few have a clue about what goes on behind the scenes!

Mind boggling!! An awesome tale of the unbelievable brains working behind the scenes in keeping our country ahead of the curve in technology first by use by the military and then converting to commercial use. Amazing how this is all kept secret in front of our eyes. A must read for all.

Amazing description of H-bomb and subsequent nuclear race. Scares the Dickens out of you as it exposes crazy strategies studied but thankfully rejected. Ends with believable speculation of brain control research. Would rate higher but for slow mid-book coverage of well understood events . Could eliminate 30% without loss of significance.

I thought I was purchasing the first book about Gernon's story of the electronic fog. These are a collaboration of stories from people with similar experiences. Its ok.. not bad. I would not give it a four star because sometimes I get bored with the stores and some are unbelievable. Trust me, I am TOTALLY into other dimensions, UFO's the unexplained, but this book did not strike me as true stories. Gernon's story was very short. That was the only story that interested me most. I will keep it on my shelf as I want a living library. Perhaps some of my friends might find it more interesting.

Excellent book But I got the impression, same as his previous book "The Fog." A lot of repeat material, If you read either one, you have read both.

Well written, very informative. I had no idea the "time tunnel" existed in the so-called Bermuda Triangle and elsewhere in the world. The information about the budding time machine was fascinating. I would recommend this informative book.

There is something about the Bermuda triangle which I feel had the potential to our lives, the mysteries within might just unlock a brighter future for us all, when we finally unlock its secrets, this book is a kind of treasure map

Really liked the book and how it was written.

Certainly an interesting book, and thought-provoking. I have not read much about the Flight 19 incident in several years, and when I stopped sort of following it, there was still a lot of speculation that somehow Flight 19 had simply vanished, with some even speculating strange possibilities such as alien abduction or a portal to a different dimension. In a way I was not really looking forward to a more mundane explanation such as the team leader simply becoming disoriented and mistaking the Bahamas for the Florida Keys..But in Beyond The Bermuda Triangle, Bruce Gernon shows that the "mundane" explanation may not be so mundane after all. He makes a good case for "electronic fog" and the effects that this electromagnetic activity may have on the human brain. Otherwise how would this experienced pilot have made so many bad decisions, and those under his command did so as well? Also I was not aware that the "flying boat" rescue plane was given to random explosions. The events that led to the loss of Flight 19 were apparently not related at all to the demise of the rescue plane. In the other books and articles I have read about Flight 19 and the Bermuda Triangle, this flaw in the design of the flying boat was never emphasized. The co-author, Rob MacGregor, the author of several of the Indiana Jones screenplays and many other books as well, adds insights to this strange subject as well. Rob is a very busy writer but makes time to be accessible to his readers and fans. This was an excellent book that I will listen to again and again. For anyone who is a fan of the Bermuda Triangle, or is a student of the unknown or unexplained, Beyond The Bermuda Triangle is an excellent addition to your library.

I heard Bruce’s story on the Astonishing Legends podcast and ordered the book immediately. Well written and extremely interesting.

A Precious Heritage: Rabbinical Reflections on God, Judaism, and the World in the Turbulent Twentieth Century

Review

"A brilliantly conceived and carefully annotated retrospective on American and Jewish events through the stormiest years of the 20th century... lovingly compiled by his son... enlightening reflections... The author's commentary... is itself extraordinary... And the sermons themselves are literary masterpieces--eloquent, passionate, even profound--and representative of the rabbinic best." RABBI LAWRENCE A. HOFFMAN, PH.D., The Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor of Liturgy, Worship and Ritual, Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion "A Precious Heritage captures... Rabbi Ballon's character... his engagement... with the great religious and social justice issues of his time. This is also the story of a father and son... Yesh traveled a path that greatly deepened his relationship with his father and his Judaism. This is an excellent book." RABBI DAVID SAPERSTEIN, Director Emeritus, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism; Former U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom "This book is a beautiful testimony to a life well-lived and messages that are eternal... Rabbi Sidney Ballon's story and sermons [help people struggle with faith] in timeless ways. What a gift to the Jewish world--and a beautiful sharing of soul with family and friends." RABBI NAT EZRAY, Congregation Beth Jacob, Redwood City, California "I recognize... [Rabbi Ballon's] wisdom and brilliance, his insightful social commentary, and his deep Jewish knowledge. He framed the concerns of the day with faith and shared the wisdom of generations past to provide a path to the future." RABBI AMY B. EHRLICH, Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York "In respectfully editing his father's sermons, [Yesh Ballon] not only brings honor to Rabbi Ballon's memory, he loves him into life such that together, they formulate their shared legacy and deed it to the future." RABBI NADYA GROSS, Congregation Pardes Levavot, Boulder, Colorado; Director, The Sage-ing(c) Mentorship Program "Rabbi Ballon personified the great generation of reform rabbis. He was dignified; Judaically and secularly highly educated. Most of all, he stood for something and was not afraid to speak his mind to high and low alike. That generation will not come again." RABBI EMERITUS JAMES L. MIREL, Temple B'nai Torah, Bellevue, Washington "Rabbi Ballon taught me that we continue in life by the deeds we perform and the lessons that we teach... Rabbi Sidney Ballon continues to live. His memory alone is a blessing." RABBI ROBERT LOEWY, Congregation Gates of Prayer, Metairie, Louisiana

Love it already.Lost a star due to printing errors (photos)It’s about the size of a VHS tape.

The author documents these great monuments with imagery and text do describe the story behind each. Great historic imagery is included as well. It makes me want to travel and see all of them through former Yugoslavian countries. The spomeniks are inspiring as forms of architecture.

As a photographer from Belgrade, I can sum up this review in one word - priceless. From beautiful imagery (both original+current state), to insightful and moving stories behind each monument, to technical specifications - this book covers it all!An absolute masterpiece, and a must-read and see for everybody who appreciates architecture, or photography, or ex-Yugoslavia!

Love the book! It is phenomenally written, you can really tell the author put years of amazing work into this book!

Great overview of monuments in ex Yugoslavia, with background story and their current condition.
