I have several different translations of several of Nietzsche's books, and Kaufmann's is still the best overall. I've quoted below from the product descriptions of this book and The Portable Nietzsche. Together, the two offer many of Nietzsche's works in two compact volumes."This book contains the complete texts of The Birth of Tragedy, Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morals, The Case of Wagner, and Ecce Homo. Edited and translated by the great Nietzsche scholar Walter Kaufmann, this volume also features seventy-five aphorisms, selections from Nietzsche’s correspondence, and variants from drafts for Ecce Homo."There is another compendium of Kaufmann's translations called "The Portable Nietzsche," which "contains the complete texts of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Twighlight of the Idols, The Antichrist, and Nietzsche contra Wagner. It has additional selections from Human, All to Human; The Dawn; Beyond Good and Evil; Toward a Genealogy of Morals; Ecce Homo; and other works Letters and Notes."

I would recommend the Basic writings of Nietzsche to both those familiar with his writing and those just starting to become aware of them. I found it to be pleasant format though one would hope for a larger font size but that would have only added to the length of the book.

Nietzsche isn't really as gloomy as you might expect someone with his nihilistic reputation to be. He's actually (from what I've read in this work) quite exuberant, all about tearing down the norm and rebuilding it in a new and wondrous form; creativity for its own sake. That being said, in order to get across his ideas, he launches attacks on pretty much every system of beliefs you can imagine, including language itself. Excellent reading if you want to think about thinking, but it will probably make you uncomfortable at one point or another.

This is a book to stay on my book shelf for years. I like The books that were contained in here. I like genealogy of Morals , Beyond good and evil and The birth of the tragedy the best. They say that Nietzsche is one of the few philosophers people read for pleasure and i find that true. A good read enough said!

Great collection of the important works which help introduce the reader to Nietzsche. I recommend pairing this with the Viking portable collection. Kaufmann's a great translation with useful/snarky footnotes. It's a beautiful edition and dust jacket as well, if that contributes to your buying decision. The page layout is handy for notetaking if you write in your books or (if like me) you appreciate easy to read layout of print.A great and affordable buy!

He despises the slaves, the unfree, the doglike people who allow themselves to be maltreated.Christian morals, democracyWhen the aristocratic value judgments declined, the plebeians imposed their own morality of unegoism, pity, self-sacrifice, self-abnegation and ascetic ideals on mankind. The egoistic `good' of the masters became the `evil' of the Christian faith.This faith constitutes not less than a sacrifice of all freedom, enslavement and self-mutilation. By preserving all that is sick, it breads `a mediocre herd animal'.Democracy, `the nonsense of the greatest numbers', with its `equality of rights', is the heir of Christianity.It is a gruesome fact that an anti-life morality received the highest honors and was fixed as a law and a categorical imperative.ArtArt is a saving sorceress. A good introduction for people with virtually no previous knowledge. I enjoy these graphic intros even though I know that they are not academic texts and should not be overly criticized for their brevity. However, nothing is said about the origins of human violence towards other humans and religious behavior. It seems to me that these aspects of human behavior would have strong roots in our evolutionary past. Why are we so violent? Why do we persist in believing in imaginary beings? And related - why, if we are evolved from egalitarian group behavior, are we so brutally insensitive to our fellow man? Many more questions are generated than answered. This is a good thing, but still, I feel that something was lacking. The reading list at the end of the book is not likely to answer these questions either. I was left wondering if there were political reasons for not addressing these concerns

I find this book to be a worthy read - because it underscores a valuable paradigm awareness. Contrary to one previous review, I feel that its lack depth yields conciseness, which enhances its benefit. You get a broader view of evolutionary psychology addressing a deeper sense of how over vast expanses of Time, Nature has adapted humanity towards better chances of survival, and how that manifests in our psyche. Focusing stage by stage on these psychological upgrades, and providing descriptions of our "wiring" adaptaions leave the reader with a pragmatic paradigm that is very helpful in accepting - or sometimes in changing - your perceptions of human behavior.Highly recommended.

Just one of my favorite lines from this fine play is "What a fine persectution--to be kept intrigued without ever being enlightened." That is the predicament of two bit players in the grand pageant that is Shakespeare's Hamlet. They know little about their childhood friend and less about court intrigues. They are we, and we are they. Like Rosencrantz, we observe closely and infer. Like Guildenstern, we trust that reason and precedent will deliver truth. For these poor fellows, neither experience nor reason enlightens and they end with a whimper, not a bang. The play is--well, playful. Stoppard plays with language, belief, classic characters, life and death. Read it aloud. Read it to yourself. Reread Hamlet, then read Stoppard's play again. Keep a copy near and dip into it in idle moments. It will delight and inform.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern show us the problem with free will is that humans are potentially completely reactionary, despite our attempts not to be. The theater of the absurd dramatizes the problem of free-will as a ridiculous concept. In Stoppard’s play the best parts were the futility of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern on the boat wondering what happens once they get to England. In our everyday lives we act the same way toward upcoming events, and while many of us just reassure ourselves with assumptions on what we will do, in reality we have no idea. That is because in a given situation we are forced to interact with what is thrown at us. Even the ultimate sign of free-will, reading self-help books, is spurred by personal failures caused by the situations thrown at us. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern get “self-help” from the player, but as Stoppard points out, all of us are on the same boat. The difference is that some of us are willing to make more assumptions and cling to values than others. Meanwhile, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern refuse to do such a thing.

I love this play, such a wonderful piece of work, masterfully written, so funny, very creative to see how the author took what most thought to be flat unimportant characters from Shakespeare HAMLET and gave them life. LOVE THIS PLAY

While the rest of Shakespeare's characters remain true to their original script, Ros and Guil step out of the box to explore a variety of topics ranging from the metaphysical to the downright comical. As the title suggests, the story is, ultimately, a tradegy -- but as the reader gets to know the two stars, it becomes a tragedy on multiple levels. One feels that their deaths are preordained, and even the moments of sidesplitting hilarity are laced with the bittersweet knowledge that it WILL end. The story is made still more touching as the characters' early realization of their fate battles with their unquenchable hope. Stoppard has captured in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern a sense of innocence that endures despite the chaos around them in a world where it seems even the laws of physics have suddenly ceased to apply. A perfect mixture of comedy and tragedy with a philosophical overtone attainable only by Stoppard, this is a play you will want to read, re-read, and act out with your friends in daily conversations.
